The most important\useful feature or element in a pattern (besides the main, clear instructions) are the helpful photos with each step. Even the most precise text can still be misinterpreted, so having the photos to show where/how you need to work is a great help to those who are more visual with their learning. As well (speaking of markings), the other very helpful thing is the symbols on the pattern pieces to show where one piece fits into the other.

And I often get patterns written in other languages and the pictures are absolutely necessary then, especially when they are written in Japanese as are my Blythe patterns. Those I can’t translate.

Important parts of a pattern to me are clear concise instructions with pictures the show the detail as well as a shot of how it fits into the whole as an insert. The right and wrong sides of the fabric should be clearly identifiable in the pictures. On the pattern pieces the most important part is straight of grain marking, especially for beginners, pattern shapes can be confusing

Its most important that a doll pattern be designed and proportioned to fit and look right on the doll. Dolls don’t have the same proportions as kids. I see way too many patterns from other companies where they scale down a kid’s pattern and don’t take this into consideration.

The most important thing for me in a pattern is the instructions. They must be clear and to the point. Having photos to support the instructions are also very nice. As others have noted before, The seam allowance is also important. I do find that the 1/4 inch seam when doing zippers can be quite challenging. Another important factor is that you should always make sure that your pattern print out to the right size, measure the 1” square-always. Other than that, have fun, and enjoy your creations 🤗

The most important\useful feature or element in a pattern is keeping to the conventions of pattern making, i.e. line with double arrows for “place on fold” and line with arrow point on each end for placement on grain, etc. I am constantly adding both to pattern pieces after printing out.

If the are variations refer back to previous instructions rather than doing the same thing over again. And simple steps like clipping curve & turn right side out don’t need photos.

Of course I need good instructions with clear pictures, but i also totally need precise pattern pictures with markings for steps that include pleats or ruffles, dots for where pieces should meet, etc. These markings really help with a good fitting, final garment.

I will be honest…I haven’t found with the patterns I have any blanks in the instructions and diagrams/pictures…. Maybe with the step pictures using fabrics and contrasting thread awlays would be best….for ease on the eyes… NOW there is a few of my boot/shoe patterns that I have been dissapointed in in the way those were written/and diagram pictures. AND FIT…honestly I expect the fit to be spot ON so I don’t have to completely re draft the pattern pieces and at times I have done that..so thus I don’t use that pattern if I have to do that.

I like the words only instruction page open on my laptop beside me (saves on ink, paper and storage later) when sewing but I also refer to the pictures section for specific needs. Pattern pieces NEED grain markings to fit properly. Walking the seam lines to ensure accurate fit between pieces is essential for success.

If the ease in the picture is off or any other part in the picture is not accurate, the whole project is a dud because the drawing told me I was going to get something else. Pictures along with directions are a helpful bonus.
