There are two things in a PDF pattern I find most important. A clear statement indicating the size paper needed. A sizing guide, like a 1" square so I know the pattern pieces are the correct size on the paper.

The important part of a pdf pattern is that I can store it online in an accessible folder. (And if it’s zipped when a larger file, it takes less space). With space being a premium, these patterns do not need to take up valuable studio space. If I print (ie for a sewing project), I can recycle the pattern, but still have it safely stored!! And my knit ones, I may just be able to access from. A device and not have to print at all!!!
One thing to note, the way the patterns are labeled when they come sometimes makes it hard to find when I’m looking for the pattern

Clear photos – Not just photographically clear, but fabrics which differentiate the right side from the wrong side of the fabric. High contrast thread or digital seam lines to emphasize the step. Show your best fabrics and designs for the cover, but for the instructions, choose fabrics which clearly show what you mean, and choose colors which don’t blend into the background. Different fabrics for the lining and the outer fabrics, and a clear right and wrong side of the fabric.

Instructions aside, what draws me to a pattern to begin with is interesting details. Something which sets the pattern apart from the multitude of patterns out there. I like details that you would see in human garments.

The most important part of a pattern is having accurate pattern pieces (love that inch marker) and then detailed instructions of tricky parts of the pattern. Pictures are helpful, but when you’re trying to make something with tucks, pleats, sharp corners, etc. I’d rather have the 1000 words than the pictures.

When sewing for competition, you must add these if they are missing from the instructions. You can bet the judge will look for these items.

The most important feature in a pattern to me is when they give you the option to print the pattern piece or give you the measurements where you can measure and cut some of the pieces. This requires less paper and print for printing and the pattern folder takes up less bulk in my box. Win, win!!

The most important aspect of a pattern are photographs/illustrations…I would not have had this as a priority had I not recently made the bog coat (?) for my granddaughter’s AG doll. It was basically a folded flat piece of fabric with one straight cut and a 1/2 box/square cut; not sure how to explain it.. I’m been sewing since I was 10; I am about to turn 65. I’ve even been a Family and Consumer Science teacher, teaching sewing! I don’t remember having such a struggle! Id have not survived without the pics! It turned out really cute though! (Since I added fur to the edges, from a rabbit Halloween costume, for my granddaughter, I did not wish to add the buttons, but rather a belt and wasn’t sure how long to make the belt as I don’t have a AG, or other 18" doll!!)

The most important thing for me about the pattern is something that’s not in the pattern, I have started reading other sewers reviews before I start making mine. They at times can point out issues that I can read and re-read in the pattern before I begin sewing to make sure I’m not making mistakes. I’ve learned the importance of writing my own reviews adding my experiences or issues, other then just picking out the star rating.

The most important part of a (at least a PDF) pattern is the square inch where you can check your scale. Even an eighth of an inch off can suddenly make your pattern a totally different size and fit! That little square inch has saved me hours and hours of time.

I would say the most important element is that ALL pattern pieces are included. I kind of hate it when a pattern just includes dimensions for a rectangle skirt piece and I have to measure and make the piece. I would much rather print out pieces and tape them together. Thanks!

While I love photos and drawings to illustrate the sewing steps, something important to me is the text versions that is printer friendly at the end. I like to have a paper version of instructions in front of me and as much as I love the color photos, it cost a fortune to print an entire pattern. I study the pattern, perhaps moving the laptop into my sewing room, but I print of the text versions to keep close to me.
