Sadly there are no wonderful shops with tables of fabric where i once ran my fingers through anymore… now my option is limited to Joanne not quite the same. I don’t use the web, i like to feel my fabric. For special projects,I’ll make the long drive to a wonderful old factory with old creaky wood floors and isles filled huge bolts of everything you can imagine overwhelm me.

I do have a Joann in town, but it is a smaller one. They are great for basics and sales. I am fortunate to have a small chain, Field’s Fabrics also. They do not sell crafts, so their whole store is devoted to fabric and I have found the sales ladies are usually able to answer my sewing questions. For those little things that I can’t find I’ve had good luck at Homesew.com for doll size notions and also doll shoes to match my outfits.

I shop for many general sewing supplies/fabrics at JoAnn Fabrics or Hobby Lobby. For quilting fabrics I love our local quilt shop ….Helios in Mt. Verrnon, Iowa and or Heritage Fabrics in Amana, Iowa. Both offer fantastic fabrics, tremendous assistance to any of my quilting questions and help with fabric selection/coordination. Many of my doll clothes and craft projects use leftover fabric from the larger quilt projects. Win Win all the way around.

I love to shop online at Girl Charley for knits and Farmhouse Fabrics for everything else. Girl Charley has 1/2 yrd bundles that they run specials on and I’ve really increased my solid color choices by taking advantage of these specials! Farmhouse Fabrics has such a huge selection of all different types of fabric, laces and trims. They sell 1/2 yrd increments and have a doll selection with tiny prints. Locally I go to JoAnns and Hobby Lobby.

I don’t buy much fabric by the meter as we don’t have a fabric store in our city, but I do buy a lot of discounted clothes and reuse the fabric that way for the doll clothes. All other doll accessories come from Michael’s, 1.5 hrs away. Customer service at Michael’s is hit and miss.

I shop for sewing supplies and fabrics at my local Walmart as I don’t have a Joann’s close by. And ordering from Joann’s is always a pain because their shipping turnaround is terrible! Etsy and eBay are a plus for small zips and buttons. I also hit the thrift stores…wonderful finds there as well. Overall, I am pleased with the prices, selection, and convenience of Walmart.

I am an avid supporter of Indie designers and suppliers. I like to read about the designers that Pixie Faire supports. I also try my best to buy my notions and bits and bobs from small businesses, especially during these hard times. My fabrics come from many places, especially from my personal stash. When I bought my 40 year old house it was completely furnished with the belongings of a senior couple and included loads of old linens. Many of those linens went to charity but I saved several for my sewing. Some of those have been turned into bags, purses, muslins for people clothes, and last, but not least, doll clothes. What can be better than using a 40 year old fabric to make a 1980 style doll dress?

I haven’t had to shop for fabric nor patterns recently because I have so much stuff in my stash at home. When I do need some little thing, I simply go to the Walmart across the road from my house. They used to have really good deals on remnants (of which I have quite a few in my bins at home), but these disappeared from the fabric area quite a while ago. I have a large number of store-bought patterns (Simplicity, McCall’s, Butterick) and a couple of binders full of ones I have gotten from Pixie Faire. I recently found a couple of cute ones at Doll-it-up online.

I live in a small tourist area will not fabric store or quilt shops. Joann’s is a hour drive each direction and I am no longer allowed to drive. I hate ordering online as I like to feel the fabric and hate returning items if I don’t like the quality .I had great results with small cuts on eBay and though they come from China the prices are amazing. I live in a small border city so the local businesses that supply fabric and notions are few. There is a Fabricland which I frequent but there is also a small shop called A Stitch in Time. I shop locally whenever possible; but I also always have two online favorite shops. I love to shop at Pixie Faire for doll clothes patterns because their patterns are top notch and their customer service can’t be beat! For small print cotton fabrics for my doll sewing, right now I shop at the Missouri Star Quilt Company. Their pre-cut fat quarters are usually just the perfect size for my projects.

I purchase a majority of my fabric and notions from Hobby Lobby and Joann’s ; occasionally at a local shop. I usually shop when things are on sale. Hobby Lobby’s clerks are always pleasant and at Joann’s some of the cashiers will try every coupon to see what works;not true at all Joann’s. Each of these places are 45 minutes away so trips are planned in advance; can’t just run out when in need. Would love to order online but I like to see and feel fabric. I ordered buttons online and they were too small and shipping is a drawback.

I shop for trims, chains and latches for purses or clothes, decorative foam for shoes on ebay.

Some items are sold in the US however most of what I purchased is shipped from China. When ordering from China you have to be careful as it typically takes 6 weeks or longer to receive an item. Some items, I’d estimate 5%, dont make it at all. Ask seller right away for a resend or money back. Ebay only allows 30 days from the expected delivery date where they will intervene and you can get your money back. Now consider most items I purchased were between $1 and $4. But even considering the hassle, this is the best place. I also price checked on Aliexpress.com and prices compare.

Lately, I shop for most supplies on Etsy. I was pleased with the varied selection, but there is inconsistency in pricing and colors from one seller to the next. I love the $35 free shipping minimum that many offer, but it can sometimes be a struggle to find that much stuff in one shop.

I shop for my fabric and supplies at many different places. I try to shop local as I like to see and feel the fabric, but our little quilt store will be closing this spring. I have Joanns and Hobby Lobby about 30 minutes away and I do like Fabric.com. Pixie Faire not only has the best doll patterns, they have shown me a variety of web sites I didn’t know existed! Always something new to check out!

I shop for fabric and supplies at Joanns, Hobby Lobby, and Etsy. I am usually very happy with my online purchases but miss being able to get into a store.

during this pandemic and not leaving the house, I am using my extensive stash which I purchased at thrift stores, yard sales, sale clothing from department stores, local stores such as Joann’s and others. when I traveled I always looked for distinctive items to re-purpose. Of late, Pixie Faire has been my pattern go to; previously commercial patterns at Joann when on sale.
