Sewing A Themed Wardrobe: It's Showtime! Part One

Hi Everyone! Welcome to Sewing A Themed Wardrobe: It's Showtime! I'm Cinnamon, host of Sewing With Cinnamon & Friends. For this course, I'll be joined by Shari Fuller, together we'll present you with a few fun ideas to create a Showtime-themed playlet for your doll collection!

The inspiration for this themed-course is the 2023 Girl of the Year doll, Kavi Sharma®. Our focus is adding a bit of glitz & glam with a few show-stopping pieces and creating a few prop-style furniture pieces to truly set the scene, providing hours of pretend play!

  • In Part One, I will talk about sewing with sequined fabrics. In my opinion, sequins are the centerpiece of any stage garment. Together,. we'll make a sparkly blazer as I share my tips and tricks for sewing success.
  • In Part Two & Three, Shari joins us with a pretty genius tutorial! Using cardboard, paper, paint, glue, and a few decorative hardware pieces, she has created an amazing up cycled design for a traveling steamer trunk! It's completely functional and includes a cute little hook on one side and drawers on the other. The video tutorials are broken apart into two sections. It may seem involved, but it's incredibly amazing to see this upcycling project come together!
  • In Part 4, We have a quick project showing you how to make a rolling garment rack. This is a great prop for backstage, a store scene, or a dream dressing room! Along with that, we'll wrap up the topic with a look at how to pull it all together with a few show-stopping accessories!

Are you ready to get started? Watch he video below as I share my tips for sewing with sequined fabric and sew up the adorably sparkly blazer!

The pattern used in this demonstration is the Liberty Jane Schoolboy Blazer for 18-inch dolls (it's also available for 14.5" dolls). I used an allover sequined fabric for the body of the jacket and a velour (feels like velvet) for the collar and facings. For this project, I opted to leave off the front pockets and the buttons. We've paired it with the Picture Day Skirt and a leotard made with the Free Swimsuit Pattern.

Along with the sequined fabric tips, the video highlights two key sewing techniques, Hong Kong binding and under stitching.

Looking Ahead: Next week we will begin working on the Edwardian Wardrobe Steamer Trunk with Shari! If you want to start gathering up supplies for that project, below you'll find a list of what's needed.

QNPoohBear your trunk is amazing! Your dad did such a good job. It actually reminds me of one passed down in my family from an aunt that used it when traveling.

My dad made me one from wood. He had it upholstered, added wood slats, brass tacks, brass corners, we papered the inside, and it has leather drawer pulls and a leather strap to close it. It’s a French Designer wardrobe trunk ca. 1910s for my Ruthie. Ruth went to live with Samantha in the Gilded Age. No Depression Era economy for her! She has her own custom wardrobe inside the trunk too.
