Sewing Holiday Traditions - Part 1

Hi Everyone! It's December and that means celebrating the holidays! I'm excited to announce the theme for this months course, Sewing Holiday Traditions. Over the course of the 4-part series we will revisit making holiday sweaters with socks with a Hanukkah twist, look at creative upcycling in a new way, present a darling tiny elf mini design, and introduce ideas for ringing in the New Year!

 

 

Are you ready to kick things off?

First, let's revisit the Sewing With Socks Christmas Sweater tutorial video. This is one of my favorite quick & easy projects! It's great for the holidays, but also great for sweaters and cardigans all year long!

We've just launched the 6th Annual Fun & Festive Sweater Contest at Pixie Faire. So I encourage you to start creating your masterpieces and pop those photos onto the grid. The contest ends on Christmas Eve!

This year I'm presenting a few new ideas for our holiday theme. As many of you know, I'm Jewish and celebrate many of the holidays and feasts throughout the year. Hanukkah is a favorite and holds many special memories!

Check out this video with my kids (back in 2006). Note: We celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas in my family, so that's why you see the lit tree in the background, just in case here is some confusion :)

Ok, back to the topic... In this next video you'll see a quick recap of sewing the Kippah for dolls. I've always called it a "Yamakah" which is actually spelled Yarmulke, which I didn't think was a good pattern title. It's more traditionally called a Kippah so the pattern is using that title.

You can find the pattern on Pixie Faire later today! Stay tuned. Both my mom and Shari worked with me to pull this pattern together, it's bee a fun collaborative project! Shari is also working on presenting her beautiful cardigan sweater (worn on our little girl in the photos) so stay tuned for that video next week.

I found a pair of soft and cozy Hanukkah socks and used the tutorial mentioned above to create a super adorable little sweater for my boy doll. Isn't he just the cutest?

You might also be wondering about my tiny Menorah! Well with some creative thinking and a lot of help from my mom, we came up with this tiny version made with Legos - you hear me right, it's legos and gold foiled birthday candles! So cute, and so simple! I'll be posting a video on IG showing this one too.

I really hope you've enjoyed this look at creating a few Hanukkah themed items for your dolly world! It's been a joy for me  to work on, now I'm off to start planning my festivities that kick off on December 7th. In our family we light the candles, have "candle races" to see which candles stay lit the longest, and eat yummy foods like cheese blintzes with sour cream sprinkled with sugar and fresh cranberry sauce, potato latkes, and Hanukkah gelt (chocolate coins).
