Every New Year’s Eve, my family and I see the New Year in. Traditionally, the first person over the threshold on New Year’s Day (a minute past midnight usually – when everyone has sung Auld Lang Syne and toasted the new year with a wee dram) should be a chimney sweep carrying coal, milk, salt, tea, sugar, coins – all the essentials for a prosperous New Year. We don’t have a chimney sweep so these days it just needs to be someone with dark hair or wearing dark clothes. The cultural pattern I would like to see – a chimney sweep because they traditionally bring good luck.
I don’t really take part in any cultural traditions but have started a few new family traditions. One we do around this time of year is to make cut out sugar cookies and everyone frosts them. We each make a unique gingerbread person. We then sit in front of the fire on a Christmas quilt and enjoy homemade treats and beverages and open presents. The beverages have changed from milk in sippy cups to wine now that my children are grown. No matter who’s house we are at we do this every Christmas Eve.

A favorite cultural thing I practice is teaching my grandchildren how to make the same Germanic dishes, that my grandmother taught me to make. She learned them from her grandmother who came to America as a young girl with her family in the 1840s. Eating the same foods that my family has eaten for over seven generations is very special. I would love to set patterns to make that were of the outfits worn by the peasants in Prussia for every day, as well as when they dressed up for church of special occasion. A Prussian military uniform would also be great, from the era of Frederick the Great. I recently found out that my father has Scottish ancestors, that came to America soon after the Uprising in 1745. the Christmas tradition in the Basque Country is especially the arrival of the Olentzero, who is not a Santa Claus, but as the Basque legend says, he is the coalman who lives in the mountains where he makes charcoal . Once a year, just before Christmas, it goes through cities and villages to distribute to the poor logs so that no one suffers from the cold on Christmas Eve. Coal is a sign of a latent life and it symbolizes the sun that will start again. to warm up the earth in this winter solstice. The beret and the worn and dirty clothes remind that Olentzero lives and works in the forest, field of wild animals and Basajaun. The sickle is used to cut fagots. Like the sickle of the god Saturn, it is also the symbol of the mysterious cut of the solstice which cuts the year into two periods. A long time ago, before representing Olentzero by a man, it was enough to hang a sickle in the fireplace to threaten children liars or disobedient who did not want to go to bedThe wine bottle recalls the bad reputation of the coal. His drunkenness earned him to be beaten by his wife. This accessory is surprising when we know that the rituals of the end of year holidays traditionally concerned water.
The sack of coal (and not gifts) first evokes the importance of this fuel in the Pyrenees to ensure the operation of the many forges.
But, symbolically, coal is a sign of a latent life and it symbolizes the sun that will start heating the earth after winter.
He asks more questions than he finds answers. Like all of us, he is blind: he does not see the new world that is coming because he is sooty with the soot that the charcoal of our fears deposits. Since the dawn of time, men and women are confronted with the mystery of existence in the face of the Universe, which remains immense and silent. But without tiring, they advance, convinced that their quest brings them ever closer to the final knowledge and at the height of their doubt there is always someone, perhaps a sorcerer, maybe a scientist, more surely a child:
to hear the unspeakable,
to feel the infinite,
to touch the unfathomable,
to see the invisible,
to taste the mystery.
Olentzero is the certainty that the Sun will never go out.and all this while singing and dancing
I dream that Pixie one day realize the beautiful Basque costumes from different provinces
Happy New Year everyone
