My interest in Scottish culture began when my youngest daughter went to a high school where the mascot was the Highlanders. First she began Highland dancing and then she learned to play the bagpipes. I really enjoyed sewing various dance costumes and I learned how to make a traditional kilt which requires 9 yards of fabric and arranging the pleats so they replicate the appearance of the plaid design as it appeared on the bolt. After graduation she attended a college where played the bagpipes for The fighting Scots. The capstone of this experience was a trip to Scotland to deliver her to a university that she attended for a semester. She bought home 9 yards of the school plaid wool so that I could make another kilt. She later attended graduate school at another university where the mascot was the fighting Scots and played the bagpipes for various activities. I was so excited to see that the graduate regalia included a lovely traditional tam that is black trimmed with the school plaid. Lately she has led the family Scandinavian culture so II would like to see more Scandinavian patterns.
