A favourite cultural tradition I take part in, when able, is to make traditional baking from Germany – my fave is coffee kuchen. It is a lot like cinnamon rolls, but done in sheets – dough spread over a cookie sheet, and covered with cinnamon, brown sugar, butter or margarine. When the dough rises, the sugar mixture settles in crevices and is often crunchy and gooey after baking – it is easier than cinnamon rolls, and can be cut in any size that works for the event. I tried to get as much of the crunchy pieces as I could! My Grandad made us homemade sausages. I love food traditions. My Gram sewed outfits for us at the holidays. Spending time with them at the holidays was special for me – add food, sewing, crafts, crocheting – wonderful memories that live on when I bake, crochet, or sew. A favorite cultural tradition I take part in is watching my grandson and granddaughter do Highland dancing in various competitions around the U.S. There are several different types of dances, such as the Sword Dance (with 4 real swords), the Highland fling, and the Hornpipe, plus others I don’t know how to spell. Not to be outdone, their older brother plays the bagpipes and marches in a Scottish band. They all have kilts and accessories like these patterns.

“A FAVORITE CULTURAL TRADITION I TAKE PART IN OR FIND INTERESTING IS the many food choices which revolve around our family gatherings together for dinners. We cook and eat Mexican, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, and food of the British Isles. However, the land of Scotland was the birth home of my great grandmother and sadly her father perished while working on building the famous railroad bridge at the Firth of Forth in the 1880’s. It was known as the blood red bridge due to over 100 men who lost their lives during construction. Shortly after her mother took her children and immigrated to the United States. “A FAVORITE CULTURAL TRADITION I TAKE PART IN OR FIND INTERESTING IS… Various Native American cultures. My mother was raised on a Sioux Reservation, so the Plains Indians are of interest. I would like to see a collection of military dress uniforms!
A favorite cultural tradition I take part in and find very interesting is The Palio horse race that takes place in Sienna, Italy in the cockel shell shaped square. Sienna is divided into 17 areas or “contrade.” Each contrade has an ancient emblem and colors that are worn by the rider and are painted on the flags waved by the huge crowd of spectators. The motifs are the Eagle,Snail, Wave, Panther, Forest, Tortoise, Owl, Unicorn, Shell, Tower, Ram, Caterpillar, Dragon, Giraffe, Porcupine, She-Wolf, and the Goose.
After an official blessing, hundreds of local people parade around in historical costume. Then a fire cracker goes off and the bare back horse race begins.
The first horse to cross the finish line wins the Drappellone. A large painted canvas which is painted by a different artis every year. This is treasured and displayed proudly by the winning contrada.
I think the colorful silks and design motifs worn by each contrade would make wonderful outfits for 18" dolls.
After the race there is a mass and then each contrada, thankful for having been a part of this ancient tradition called “The Palio” celebrate with an Italian feast . I’m sure thae have lots to talk about after the days exciting race!

A favorite cultural tradition I take part in or did is the American tradition of opening presents left by Santa Claus Christmas morning, this tradition seems to be less tradition every year, people are telling their children there is no Santa Claus, and we are more about the “me” generation. A cultural pattern I would like to see offered at Pixie Faire would be the American Indians and their wardrobe. Though this would be something that would be hard to accomplish, someone who knows all about American Indians (or American Natives if you want to be politically correct). I think in America we need to appreciate the American Indians first and foremost as do our children.
A favorite family tradition is the making of Norwegian breads and cookies for the holidays. My mother’s St. Lucia costumed doll has a place of prominence. Then there are the foods (many of which I skip!) lutefisk, pickled herring, pickled cabbage,
