Each year at Christmas our family gathers to celebrate our Scottish Heritage and family. We are a group of four generations the oldest being 98 and the youngest 9 months. This tradition started with my Grandparents who arrived in Canada at the beginning of the 1900s.

A favorite cultural tradition I take part in is our small town’s tulip festival. We dress up in authentic Dutch costumes and entertain over 100,000 visitors each year. I have made adult and children’s Dutch costumes and must try a doll costume sometime.

Our City of Armadale, also sister city to Armadale in Scotland celebrates a highland gathering and kilt run every year. Our Mayor wears the Armadale tartan kilt for these special occasions.

An interesting cultural tradition is the grooms sisters placing a tartan sash on the bride welcoming her into the “clan”. I would like to see costumes for all cultural dance, from maypole dance fancy dress, Irish dance, and Native American with so many different tribes would be a wonderful collection.

I married into the Polish culture. One tradition we used to take part in was having your Easter food blessed by the priest. A special ceremony would be done on the steps of the church and you would bring some of your Easter meal in a basket. The churches in our area do not follow this tradition anymore.

A favorite cultural tradition I take part in is preparing gift baskets annually for my local church fair in Massachusetts. One of the baskets that I will be preparing is an 18 inch doll & wardrobe. I can sew & crochet several outfits that will be going in that basket, but want to design+sew+include an ethnic Greek outfit(if I have time to do it) I will be giving these baskets, & they go up for a “chinese style” auction, to make money for the church(to pay their electricity, heat, water, etc…) I will be looking at all the ethnic outfits on Pixie Faire to see what is available for the BOGO sale January 4th

A favorite cultural tradition I find interesting is the variety of traditional clothing styles from India and from African nations. A cultural pattern I would like to see offered at Pixie Faire would be a variety of Native American cultural/historical outfits, patterns from India that include an outfit for the boys, and some traditional African outfits, but specific traditions, like a chole as well as sari for India, Cherokee, Hopi or Inuit clothing for boys and girls, or Igbo or Yoruba traditional clothing – or with all the project efforts to sew purses, perhaps patterns from the communities you work with where the profits from sales for these traditional clothing styles could be provided to those fundraising efforts. They would be beautiful on the variety of dolls that are available and could share cultural traditions that are not well known to many in the U.S.

A FAVORITE CULTURAL TRADITION I TAKE PART IN is making German goodies every Christmas. Not only are they delicious but my 93 year old Mother loves to assist while we use her well used recipes. A CULTURAL PATTERN I WOULD LIKE TO SEE OFFERED AT PIXIE FAIRE WOULD BE: I have the German patterns so I would love patterns from Italy to honor my husbands heritage.

A favourite tradition is to participate and enjoy as many cultural traditions as possible. In my community this is easy as we host a 13 day Folklorama festival each August – 44 unique country/cultural pavilions, each featuring the unique costume, cuisine and entertainment of the region. It is the largest and longest running (50 years) festival of its kind in the world

A FAVORITE CULTURAL TRADITION I FIND INTERESTING IS Scotland’s, particularly music and dance. My kids competed in Scottish fiddle music for years. A CULTURAL PATTERN I WOULD LIKE TO SEE OFFERED AT PIXIE FAIRE WOULD BE the fancy baby dress that Korean’s use to celebrate a babies first birthday.

A CULTURAL PATTERN I WOULD LIKE TO SEE OFFERED AT PIXIE FAIRE WOULD BE MORE POLISH & IRISH PATTERNS.

I am interested in north american First Nations pow wow ceremonies. There are dance and drum competitions all over the Canadian prairies every summer and they are magical. Highly recommended! I would love to see a pattern for a traditional girl’s pow wow dance costume.

My husband has Swedish ancestry and we used to do the Santa Lucia thing at our house. However, I have not seen any Swedish doll costumes since my daughter had Kirsten of the American Girl dolls 30 years ago. It would be fun to have some real Swedish looking costumes.
