Most of my favorite tips have already been listed, but I’ll repeat them anyway:
1. iron all seams
2. rip out seams when needed
3. use 2 rows of thread for gathering
The tips are all great! Thanks!
Donna
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to pay attention to details. Read instructions twice, so you don’t miss anything!
My favorite sewing tip is being patient! Things turn out better when you’re not in a hurry :)
My favorite sewing tip or trick is French seams since I don’t own a serger.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to walk away when things aren’t going right. Take a break and come back to it with fresh eyes.
My favorite tip is to use a two sided tape to hold zippers and Sean’s together you. It washes out but helps stabilize fabric
My favorite tip is to cut several different outfits that can be used with the same color thread and have my serger next to my sewing machine so I can easily switch between the two.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to read all instruction first and to iron all seams to set them.
My favorite sewing tip is two rows of threads for gathering. So much flatter and less fight with gathers
Insteadof using straight pins, and wording about dropping them, I use scotch tape on my patterns and then cut them out. It works great and I don’t worry about my pets getting hurt.
My favorite sewing tip is to only sew when well rested and have good, bright lighting. Saves a world of frustrations from happening!
To have my kids occupied so I can sew uninterrupted
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to make sure to clean up stray threads or frayed edges of fabric as I work to make sure my finished product is neat and professional.
My favorite sewing tip is to walk away when nothing seems to be going right and resume later (maybe even the next day) and start afresh.
My favourite tips is how to sew front and back in shoulders and how to sew round parts
My favorite sewing tip is the same as my cooking tip – assemble all the project items in one place to ensure that you have everything before starting the project
Hand….it’s not a four letter word! Stitching by hand for small items or decorative accent is something your machine cannot do. I especially do all dress hems by hand. I’ve been known to re do hems by hand and then remove the machine stitches.
Cut multiple items from same cloth and sew all at the same time.
My favorite sewing tip—if you make big mistake, give yourself a 15 minute break, then start to sew again.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is printing or tracing patterns onto freezer paper and ironing it onto the fabric so pins aren’t needed to cut out the pattern and you don’t have to worry about the pattern moving.
My favorite sewing tip is to always have the seam ripper close by.
My favorite tip/trick is to use a small scrap of fabricto place the needle down into to begin stiching a seam. It keeps the fabric from getting sucked into the needle plate hole.
My favorite sewing tip is to read ALL directions BEFORE beginning a project! It can save a lot of tears, time and swearing! 😂
When making multiple projects that are the same. See the same steps for each project before moving on to next step
My favorite tip or trick is to use old baby clothes and make 18 inch doll clothes
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to copy all PDF files on cardstock and cut them out. I trace around the pieces with a water soluble marking pen, then cut them out. Wherever there’s a mark for button placement, darts, or notches, I use a small paper punch to make a hole in the cardstock pattern piece, then mark the fabric through the hole. If my paper punch does not reach far enough, like the top of a dart, I punch a hole manually with an “ice pick”. I store the pattern pieces in a page protector with a picture of the pattern on top and file them in a 3-ring binder by type – Historical, Costume, etc. I never print out the instructions; to save ink I use the instructions on my laptop.
What wonderful tips there are here. Mine is probably posted here also, but I haven’t had time to read them all – yet. I plan to. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Blessed Holidays to all.
My favorite sewing tip is to put everything needed for a project in a bin with a lid: pattern, thread, cut pieces, etc. I keep several of these bins for works in progress. When I am finished with a sewing session, everything goes back in the bin and gets placed in my closet. Everything stays together, with no lost pieces, and my sewing room stays much neater in between sewing sessions.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is the French seam. It’s just really nice to hide all the rough edges inside.
My latest favorite sewing tip is to make multiple copies of a pattern and cut out all at the same time. It saves time and I can just sew instead of taking time to cut out.
My favorite trick is to cut a strip of light weight iron on stabilizer, sew it, right sides together along the hem line, then carefully fold it up, using the tip of the iron to secure it. When I know it is even and none of the stabilizer shows I iron it flat. Hem straight, secure and you can put all your fancy stitches along the hem any way you want.
When pressing a curve, press over a curve, either using a seamstress’ ham or even a rolled up towel. This gives the curve a smother shape, especially when making small garments such as doll clothes. When turning a lined bodice, for example, this eliminates bunching, and gives a nicer finish to the garment. Especially effective when pressing a set-in sleeve on any size garment.
My favorite sewing tip is to practice practice practice! And stretch yourself. You never know what you can do if you don’t try!
favorite sewing tip or trick is to use the right notion to get the job done . I love the wool mat and small iron for small projects
My favourite sewing tip or trick is, when sewing something stuffed (like a pillow or plush toy), to tie a tiny knot, push the needle through close to the seam and then, as far as needle will go, somewhere in the large middle, pull tight the thread, snip the thread, and the tail will pop back and be on the inside!
My fave sewing tip is to use a server so fragile fabrics don’t fall apart
My favorite sewing tip or trick is “measure twice, cut once,” because I often catch myself making slight errors that I might otherwise have missed.
My favourite sewing tip is how I knot the thread on a needle. Twist the end of the thread 3x around the needle, then slide the knot to the end of the string ;-)
Always make sure the fabric and pattern match.
My favorite tip is to make sure you read the instructions thru before starting anything.
My favorite tip is to layout all pieces needed for outfit before cutting and cut multiple fabricsso that you can make a few of that outfit.
My favorite sewing tip is to hold the two tail threads (needle and bobbin threads) behind the pressure foot and pull them to the back when you start sewing on knit fabric.
I dont really have any sewing tips, but would love to have all of the above on a page to print out!
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to read all directions and to use old clothes to make the new outfits.
My favorite sewing tip is always sew on the flat before constructing the final last seams and always serge all pieces when possible or zigzag the edges of seam allowance.
My favorite sewing tip is to spray starch fabric and iron fabric before cutting out pattern. My main reason for this is: ironing pattern pieces after cutting often shrinks the pieces and the pattern doesn’t go together well. When this is done prior to cutting, the pieces fit together perfectly. The outfit you sew together will look like it just stepped out of a magazine. A prosperous New Year to all!
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to cut out a couple of the items from the same pattern in different materials, and then sew them all at once
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to be nicer to yourself. You are more critical of your work than anyone else.
“My favorite sewing tip or trick is when sewing with knits put a little piece of interfacing underneath the seam, especially in the beginning so your stitches do not bunch up! Hope this tip is helpful to you as it was for me.
A clear, clutter-free work space.
My favorite tip is being retired & getting to go to my Sewing Room 24/7, turn on some nice music on my Boze Radio & sew to my hearts content ! !
Lots of great tips y’all!
My favorite sewing tip or trick is To read the pattern all the way through. If creating a pattern, have someone else test it to ensure it is clear to others. Above all else enjoy it❣️
My favorite sewing tip or trick is make sure all seams are well pressed as you sew.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is…tissue paper-I use it to sew slinky or vinyl materials by putting strips under my needle. I also like my new Teflon sewing foot!!!
My tip is to put music on and relax!
My favorite sewing tip is to have FUN creating, planning, sewing…..it’s like having a second childhood!
I guess my favourite sewing tip is to read the pattern instructions and study the pieces and understand how they fit together before even thinking about beginning to sew. Pretty basic, but it saves a world of headaches!
My favorite sewing tip is a good lamp.
My favorite sewing tip (even after 6 decades of sewing) is read the directions all the way through and follow them. It will save heartache and using your least favorite tool – the seam ripper!
My favorite sewing tip or trick is notching curves after sewing the seam. Notching helps the seam lay flat either way the seam curves.
Try to conserve your fabric by cutting it wisely.
My favorite sewing tip is my professional 5-thread serger. Does sew much (pun intended).
My favorite sewing tip is a good lamp. Eyes are not as good as they use to be. Also found out sewing machine needles with bigger holes for threading is better.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is making use of additional feet on my sewing machine.
My favorite sewing tip or trick…as a beginner, I find it really important to not have my expectations too high. I’m paying more attention to “bought” items, and usually find some imperfections there. Expecting perfection for my finished items is way too stressful!
My favorite sewing tip or trick is accurate cutting
My favorite trick is to decrease the stitch length when sewing doll clothes, especially Barbie size! It allows for much more control and tighter seams.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is measure twice and cut once👍💖
My favorite tip is to use a glue stick to hold trims in place before sewing.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is all of them they make my life so much easier.
My favorite sewing tip is my OTT light table lamp – what a difference a daylight spectrum bulb makes in sewing tiny details and matching thread/fabric, especially on dark winter days!
My favorite trick or tip is to use surgical stitch cutters as seam rippers, especially for removing serging. I got my first one at a sewing expo, and then ordered them in bulk from a surgical supply company.
My favorite sewing trick is using lots of lace, Rick rack and special buttons.
Always make sure you cut out all the right patten pieces
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to use coffee filters to put under your knits, so it does not get sucked into machine.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is one I never seem to manage to do….have a doll handy while sewing. It seems I am always making things as a surprise for my Granddaughter and she has her doll. Maybe I need my own doll! I have also read lots of new ideas here, thanks!
My favorite tip is always to measure twice and only cut once. I learned this the hard way but have benefited from it since I was told!
One can ever have enough seam rippers! You know I am right!
I use the tightest tension and the longest stitch length and hold the top thread for more tension. Perfect gathers every time and no special equipment required.
My favorite sewing tip is to always line the bodice of doll clothes. I like to use white lightweight organdy, but batiste or any lightweight cotton fabric would work. It not only gives a lovely look to the inside of the garment, but then you don’t have to fiddle with facings.
My favorite tip for sewing tried and true patterns aka TNT, is to back them with heavy interfacing such as Pelion’s Decor Bond and hang them up using pattern hooks. Now they are always at the ready to cut out; smooth and slightly weighted.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is using scotch tape to tape buttons on and then machine sew them in place.
My favorite sewing tip is to keep scraps of fabric handy to test thread settings and choose decorative stitches for embellishment.
My favorite tip is to use the correct needle in your machine.
My favorite sewing trick is a French seam. Didn’t know that’s what it was until recently, but I hate having frayed or seen seams, and a French seam takes care of that even on easy projects!
My favorite sewing trick would be to keep your project ironed very crisp. IRON IRON IRON
MY FAVORITE SEWING TIP IS WHEN MAKING LITTLE GIRL CLOTHES IS HAVING ENOUGH FABRIC TO MAKE DOLL CLOTHES TO MATCH AND THEN WATCH THIER FACES LIGHT UP.
My favorite sewing trick is to serge (or zigzag) cut edges of fabric before prewashing. This cuts down on fraying, tangling, and wrinkling. I seldom need to iron fabric after prewashing.
My favorite sewing tip is to keep a chopstick handy for turning out tiny corners without tearing the stitching.
My favorite sewing tip or trick is to use seam fray on fabrics that want to ravel also use a zig zag stitch on the seams as well.
“My favorite sewing tip or trick is to have a magnetic pincushion handy.
My favorite sewing tip is to use iron on velcro for the closures.
My favorite sewing tip is to use leftover wooden chopsticks to turn points & tight places. I always have at least 2 running around here. LOL
My favorite sewing tip is NEVER begin a sewing project when your body is tired.
My favorite sewing top and trick is….thae adhesive tape on knits. Kepts fsbric fron stretching and gives a smooth finish..also lots of pressing your fabtic as you sew.
My favorite sewing tip is to use kids favorite outgrown clothing to make new doll clothes for their dolls.
