Hi Everyone!
November has 5 Tuesdays, which gives us the opportunity to share some news and updates with you! This post will outline the coming November topic, provide you with some resources to get prepared, and get your feedback on what's to come in 2022.
Our November topic is Embellishing the Holiday Dress!
How do you take something ordinary and make it extraordinary? With embellishments! In this topic I will show you how adding the perfect embellished details not only elevate the design, but really make your garment stand out. We will begin with a look at a few basic dress designs, fabric types to choose from, and embellishment sources to make or create the perfect finishing details. I’ll demonstrate a few different ways to add the embellishments, both prior to construction and after the garment is finished. And finally we’ll wrap up the topic with a look at staging for the perfect photo or packaging for a memorable gift giving experience! I’m excited to share these tips and techniques with you!
But first a few resources to get you prepared for the topic.
Carnaby St Dress pattern. If you don't already have that one, I encourage you to use your November coupon code to get your copy. This dress includes several variations and both are the perfect canvas for adding embellishment!
I'll also be demonstrating on the dress made from the Blossom/Starlight Gala pattern mash-up (see the video at the bottom of this post). It's a beautiful dress as is, but adding embroidered beaded appliqué really takes it to a whole new level!
BIG NEWS!
We're excited to let you know that pre-cut shoe soles are in production and we're working on getting Pixie Packs back on the site too!
We've been in limbo for while since Covid first hit in spring 2020. We moved out of our store location thinking we'd be back in a new space in a few months, but those few months have turned into almost 2 years! We've hit some challenges and a few road blocks, but we're pushing forward and hope to be in our new office space soon! In the meantime we're getting Pixie Packs back into production at a small scale, testing the waters so we can go full scale at the new location!
We do have a few Pixie Packs, ready to ship!
If you're interested in making the black dress that's featured on the cover of the pattern you can! There are limited quantities of the Carnaby St Dress Holiday Collection Pixie Pack available, but a few is better than none, right!
We will start working on this next Tuesday, so if you order this week you should have your supplies ready to go!
Additionally, I have used fabric from the 1960s 123 Wrap Dress Pixie Pack to make one of the examples too! I've added the silver netting and tulle to this Existing Pixie Pack, so you can make that dress as well!
You can follow along with this topic with any dress as your base design. The important details to consider are the fabric choices and the types of embellishment to use. For holiday dresses, I like to use special occasion fabrics such as Silk Dupioni (poly blends work great too!), Rayon blends, Taffeta, Crushed Velour, Sparkly tulle, Sequined fabrics. Embellishments can be cut from embroidered fabrics usually found in the special occasion or bridal sections. I'll go not this in more detail next week when we roll out the topic.
If you don't want to use the Carnaby St Dress pattern, here are a few other suggestions:
Here's the video tutorial for the Blossom/Starlight Gala pattern mash-up. This version uses the bodice from Blossom and the skirting from Starlight Gala.
In December our topic will be Sewing Tiny Gifts. This will focus on tiny gift-able accessories for dolls to give dolls. Things like purses, shoes, hats, pet accessories, baby toys, etc.
Then we're on to 2022, can you believe it?
We're working on our calendar of topics and would love your input! In the comments below, please let us know what you'd be interested in seeing, learning, or participating in!
We have a few different formats we use for building out topics:
With those things in mind, we'd love your feedback. Let us know what types of things you'd love to talk part in during 2022!
I have a Cricut and know there’s a way to use it to cut out doll clothes (convert pdf to svg???), but can’t figure it out. I’d love to learn how to use my Cricut for making doll things in general.
I’d also love to learn how to resize patterns so I can make modern AG patterns fit my Pleasant Company dolls.
More information about sergers and serging would also be welcome!
I’d love to know how to resize patterns so that i can use them for babyborn dolls or slimmer and smaller dolls. Pattern hacks are great too. And i love to make shoes and hats.
Love all of the comments so far. I would also like to learn more about converting pattern pieces to SVGs for use with electric cutters. Also, learning some jewelry making for the dolls would be great, especially lengths for necklaces and hair accessories. Love the SWC group ;)
I would like to sew beautiful period clothing for little girls’ (AG 18") dresses such as the Flossie Potter 18oo’s Simple Day(? I think) Dress with puffy sleeves and a full skirt. or something from 1700’s or early1900’s (Samantha & Nellie) as well. Those period dresses would be so much fun to embellish! Maybe we could add accessories like hats too!
Any historical pattern sew-a-longs. Maybe one that includes hats, shoes and accessories to complete the look
Learn to use Brother Scan and Cut machine to spare my hands.
Help to convert pdf patterns to fit my Our Generation Dolls….This is absolutely critical before doing the more fitted, woven fabric, historical doll patterns that I am longing to sew.
Bomber Jacket sew along. Susan B. Anthony sew along,
Boy doll sew alongs…Robin Hood or Knight or Evening wear that would pair with a girl doll Renaissance or Gala night sew along. I want to start doing couples in historical outfits….Almanzo and Laura Ingalls prairie outfits…Anne of Avonlea and Gilbert couple outfit….Downton Abbey couple outfits. Riverboat gambler and southern belle circa 1870s…etc.
Review of doll pattern drafting software products available.
LOVE millinery, shoes, belts, all kinds of accessories. Great upcoming topic for December, I love adding special touches and details to doll clothes. Maybe do a series on sewing for Wellie Wishers dolls? You generally have excellent topics for us, I’m looking forward to what you come up with for 2022. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us!
I would love to see something historical with a sew along. I have always felt so intimidated with them but really want to sew one.
I would love a sew-along of more difficult patterns, like medieval dresses with all the trims and such. I would also love to see the fairy tale topic that had been previously planned. Thanks for all the great topics!
I would love to see how to convert the Pdf cutting files to SVG to use with a cutting machine.. I have problems with my right hand and have to depend on others to cut my pattern and pattern pieces for me.
Like Marjorie (and Linda H), I would love to see how to make alterations to 18" American Girl patterns to fit different the slim vinyl 18" Carpatina dolls. When you buy a Carpatina pattern, you generally also get the pattern pieces to fit the AG dolls. Perhaps these could be used in a tutorial to show the principals of how to make alterations? I am managing to alter AG patterns to fit Maplelea (who just have longer arms, a deeper armscye, etc). Carpatina dolls are the same size exactly as Magic Attic, Just Pretend, etc, but only Carpatina are still in production – Mihaela of Carpatina provides a fine line of well-researched historical and ethnic costuming. Much of the Carpatina dolls’ clothing also fits Kids ’n Cats, with slight limb length differences – and Journey Girl feet/shoes fit Carpatina etc. Thank you for EVERYTHING!
I would like a way to convert the AG patterns to fit the Kids n Cats dolls. I have been a member for many years and have amassed a huge collection of adorable patterns for the bigger dolls, hoping I would be able to convert them for use with my KnC dolls, but the few times I tried to convert them I had glaring failures.
I have lots of the historic patterns but am afraid to make them LOL, can we have a sew along for historic patterns? 1700’s, or earlier?
I would love Regency, Romantic era or Victorian era sew-alongs. Also, embroidery, heirloom and English smocking. I am good with basic and intermediate sewing challenges, I want to raise my sewing to the next level. There are a few doll sewists on Etsy who I admire and collect their creations; I would love some sew alongs where they are asked to contribute. I would learn so much. For example, Keepers Dolly Duds (I know she is retired now, but wow, she has such knowledge.)
I was really looking forward to the Fairytale Wedding/fantasy dress topic that had previously been planned for earlier this year. I would love to see a sew-along of the Dollhouse Designs To The Ball pattern – it is a beautiful Cinderella dress design. I actually have the pattern, and it looks like it would have some great technique lessons in it (haven’t attempted it yet :)
I have enjoyed all of the previous projects and look forward to 2022. I love historic garments for AG, Boys and Wellie. I would love to see more historically accurate garments and techniques for these groups.
I agree with the above post about serger techniques for making doll clothes more efficiently. The other suggestion I have is patterns for larger dolls. There are dolls larger than 18-19 inch dolls and it seems to be excluded. I realize that baby patterns have extra-small sizes and can be altered or manipulated but they have a baby doll look. I would like to see more discussion about larger size dolls.
I would also love victorian era or fantasy themed wardrobe. Like a modern day Disney princess wardrobe.
I would love a pioneer based wardrobe. Or an everyday capsule wardrobe. I have loved the themed wardrobes but am not really into 1960-90 styles.
Love all the ideas already mentioned! It’s it possible for a class on resizing some patterns to fit dolls such as Journey Girl? Most AG dolls bodice and sleeves are to big.
I would love to see how to fit 18" American Girl patterns to different dolls such as the Carpatina
dolls.
I would love to have a class on embroidery in the hoop. I struggled with jeans most recently, so a class with different styles each week would be awesome. I love the idea of themed sews.
Anything historical would be amazing. I’m sure that with the new Doll of the Year, there will be some new ideas as well. :-)
I struggle with delicate fabrics like the sheer and mesh fabrics. I’ve recently done this with a dress for one of my girls and although I got it done, it wasn’t as pretty as I would have liked. Tips for these slippery, unstructured fabrics would be great. They look so pretty but they are challenging to sew without them getting pushed through the machine plate or slipping – or tearing them apart when trying to use tear away stabilizer and such. Also difficult to not have the stitches and folded hems show since they are sheer.
Glad you are bringing back Pixie Packs. December’s class sounds like fun. I love learning ways to use patterns I already have with hacks and mash-ups. Sew alongs for more difficult patterns – others have already mentioned jeans and the motorcycle jacket and I would be interested in either of those. I am thinking of purchasing a cutting machine and there are so many on the market. I want to learn how I could use one in embellishing doll clothes and make a smart purchase. Can a class be given on just basic information for possible uses and what to look for but not necessarily how to operate it?
love pixie pack for this topic it is so hard to find fabric in my area due I lived in rural area of wy. there is no shopping malls and love making hats too. each month for SWC topic is always a surprise for me I join for techniques etc. the patterns ideas how to make this dress or add zipper or buttons to outfits NOW JUST NEED TO FIND THE TIME TO SEW WORKING LESS AND MORE SEWING??!!!
Love to see a class on “in the hoop” projects. I see so many patterned that mention are done “in the hoop” and don’t really know how this works. Using a serger for doll-size projects would also be interesting as mentioned by someone in another post above. I’m not sure what could be done with small projects either. Love the sew a longs for various patterns—maybe one for historical patterns…pioneer, victorian, and into the 1900s. Also would like a class to support us with making the miniature projects offered for dolls for the holidays…like the snow globes, stockings etc.
I love pattern hacks, patterns for hat making, patterns and ideas for making all sorts of accessories, and stylish up to date patterns for 18" dolls and also Barbie dolls. I would also appreciate it if there was a list of what is planned for each month ahead of time , so that we can decide if we want to continue with our SWC membership or not, depending on what is being offered.

I was really looking forward to the fantasy wedding and the tambour embroidery topics mentioned earlier this year, so I hope you can include those in 2022. Maybe one way to accommodate the cutting machine / machine embroidery people is to offer two topics for two months, so that members can choose which topic to follow so that people who don’t have the equipment still have a topic. You sell such cute embroidery projects – the masks and hand puppets come to mind – I could see decorating tees, small embellishments on certain patterns, scale, stabilizers, free standing lace, in the hoop – seriously, there’s enough content based on your offerings. The tambour – well, I could use a few tips (like how to actually do it). I don’t know how hard that would be to set up-maybe course codes? At any rate, I always learn something in the monthly topics. Here’s to a better 2022!
I would definitely participate if we had a sew along for the motorcycle jacket …with leather or vinyl and a little zipper and a lining….too scary of a project to do without help!
I would love to see renaissance, regency, Victorian, or fantasy themes. I would also love to see more shoes and boots for dolls (especially smaller dolls like Ellowyne). I love the technique videos because i can apply those to any project. I agree with another member that embroidery or Cricut would be nice. I also really like the pattern hacking techniques.
What is the code for our free pattern/class not able to find anywhere, thanks
I’m really enjoying making hats and would love a monthly series on hat making.
I would love more on the miniature millinery. I would also love more on using my silhouetteWith my projects as well as embroidery.
I would like some serger techniques that can be used making doll clothes more efficiently.
PELETON/ MOTORCYCLE JACKETS ! I have stepped back from it, as it is possessed….a great, New Years project. Thank you.
December looks really good 🥰
Using cricut to make doll projects, embroidery machine doll projects and working with printable iron on fabric.

This was my first year as a SWC member : the pattern hacks, sewing a themed wardrobe and the sew with rainwear fabrics were my favourite topics.
I love all the suggestions in the posts above.
I’d also love to know how to resize patterns so that I can use them for other sizes of dolls (Adora Toddler dolls, BJD’s 1/3, My Twinn dolls poseable, Gottz little kidz,…)
I really like the suggestion about making jewellery for dolls. (My husband does this for me now. But he doesn’t really like to do this.) The same thing when I have issues with my serger…
A complete sew along for the historical patterns – from the underwear to the dress – also seems a great topic.
I would love a complete shoe making course – from the design to the making. I would love to make shoes for my My Twinn dolls. It is so hard to find cute shoes for these dolls – or patterns.
Maybe something for the special techniques section : a course about painting doll faces.
Changing the wig and eyes and painting the lips of my AG dolls is something that I already can do. But painting the eyebrows and eyes is something that scares me. (I recently got a BJD doll and this opened a whole new world for me – you can do so much with these dolls.)
Maybe there are Pixie Faire members who already master these techniques and who can give tips and tricks ?
