Sewing A Bespoke Garment: Flossing & Eyelets

Welcome back!

In this video, we will continue to explore ways to add some bespoke details to your garments as we turn our attention to the corset in my Victorian Unmentionables pattern. The corset itself is foundational to Victorian bespoke fashion as it adds the proper support to the highly structured Victorian garments. In our first demonstration, we are going to address a common problem with the boning in corsets.

Boning has a habit of shifting around in the casing which can cause it to twist or wear through the fabric. It wouldn't do to have a bespoke garment marred by a wayward piece of boning. A solution to this was to sew a series of stitches around the boning to provide additional stabilization and reinforcement. Instead of simply tacking the boning in place with a few basic stitches however, dressmakers saw this as an opportunity to turn a practical solution into a beautiful embellishment with a technique called “flossing".

There are countless flossing designs for a variety of applications on corsets, and I am going to start out this video by demonstrating one of them for you. Strong and durable eyelets are a must in any well-made made corset, and I am going to finish up this video and my corset by demonstrating how to make them by hand.

This has been fascinating. I love sewing by hand and embroidering so I’m so happy to see there are new techniques to try. I never realized the embroidery on corsets was so functional!

I love this segment, because it shows how to do the hand stitching like I know my mother used in making clothes for antique dolls she dressed for people. That made a difference in how a small garment looked.
