Creative Upcycling: The Final Reveal

We did it! Our projects are finished. The thing we enjoyed the most was seeing how we each saw different possibilities with he shirt. Shari worked to stretch the fabric as far as it could go resulting in a beautiful version of her Literary Dress. Donna worked with eh existing garment to come up with something completely new resulting in a darling set of girl and doll peasant dresses! Cinnamon changed the look of the fabric itself to create a fresh new look resulting in a colorful Sew Powerful Purse! We hope we've inspired you to look through your closet and find things to upcycle too!

Follow along in this video to see how we created the final details and finished up our upcycled projects!

I always thought to make bias tape you had to cut long thin strips and sew them together. I love this technique! I can’t wait to try it.

@ Patricia – I only did elastic in the back of the girl’s size dress. I wanted it to pull on over the head, yet I wanted the trim to be stitched down across the front. So, I gathered the front, then stitched the trim down, stopping at the side seams. For the doll dress, I gathered the waistline and stitched the trim down all the way around. Since the dress had a back closure, there was no need for a stretchy waistline. Thanks for asking – I had planned to say that in the video, but then ended up just doing the fast paced “music” version.

BTW, I’ve been upcycling for YEARS! Have found it is less expensive to buy used clothing from thrift shops and make doll clothes from them, than to purchase actual fabric AND, you can find the most unique fabrics sometimes……NOT to mention, it keeps all recyclables out of the landfills in the event they don’t happen to be sold or re-used. LOVE each of your ideas. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Pixie Faire and Sewing with Cinnamon. Thanks for all you do! Sincerely.

Hi. Don’t mean to ask such a ‘question’, BUT, Donna, did you place the elastic ONLY on the backs of the dresses, and only gather the front? I believe that’s what I’m seeing???? Thanks!
