Shari: Ever since I first read the story “Anne of Green Gables”, by L.M. Montgomery, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have held a special place in my heart. That “Anne-girl” painted such a delightful picture of her beloved islands, that a part of me wanted to claim them as my own. Though my visits to the to the islands have only ever been in my imagination, I still managed to find a real “kindred spirit” there in Eve Coleman, the charm and talent behind “Keepers Dolly Duds Designs”.
Over the last sixteen years, Eve has made a name for herself in the world of historical doll clothes fashion. Her exceptional designs and attention to detail set them apart from all others. This career path has been a long time in the making as her love of sewing began at a very early age.
Eve: I remember watching my Mom cut and sew outfits for us on her Imperial sewing machine. I know she did it out of necessity and didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoyed watching her. She would let me have the scraps, a needle and thread, and a pair of blunt scissors to keep me busy and out of her hair, no doubt. I can remember laying fabric on the floor with my doll on top and cutting around its figure. Then, I’d sew the “dress” at the shoulders and up the sides while it was still on the doll. As a young girl, my older sisters and I use to have a play house with a huge box of scrap fabric in it and we spent many hours searching for the right piece of fabric to see who could make the prettiest outfit for our Barbie dolls. As a teenager, I made most all my clothes on my mother’s Imperial sewing machine (see picture of me in my homemade outfit… 1976!). It was a straight stitch with reverse and a button hole attachment. I always loved looking through the pattern books for new outfit ideas.
Though her earliest sewing experience began with her dolls, like most girls as she grew older she put them away to spend more time sewing for herself and her home. Still, she always held a special affection for dolls and in 2004 she came full circle when she began making clothes for “American Girl” dolls.
Eve: For a number of years I handmade jointed mohair teddy bears, and would often dress them. I sold many of these bears over the years on a website called KeepersBears.com. I also owned an 18-inch “Girl on the Go” doll which I had made a wardrobe for just for the fun of it. I really liked sewing for a doll that size. My husband, who happened to be an avid “eBayer”, encouraged me to try my hand at selling my bears and my doll clothes on eBay. I quickly discovered that doll clothes were very popular, especially ones made for a doll called “The American Girl Doll”. I wondered where one could buy a doll such as that. Well of course my husband knew where and surprised me with my first American Girl doll, Kirsten, which of course he bought on eBay.
American Girl dolls provide a unique opportunity to explore history, and this is perhaps one of the things that sets these dolls apart from others.
Eve: I am not such a fan of modern clothing. I rather like when girls were dressed as girls and boys as boys such as historical fashions depict. I am old fashioned for sure. I believe styles are like history lessons although I would never claim my doll outfits are historically correct. How could they be…using today’s fabrics, notions and fancy sewing machines? I do like them to look as real clothing would or at least as close to that as I can manage given the scale of the 18″ doll. I often watch old movies, look through vintage catalogs (my husband is always on the lookout for old catalogs for me), and photographs. The internet is an endless source of historical clothing, and patterns, for that matter. Inspiration is not difficult to find when surfing the net.
Shari: When Eve began selling her dresses on Etsy in the fall of 2011, I saw her work for the first time. Her dresses were exquisite, and I really felt she gave me something to aspire to. At that time, I was working on my very first pattern. The dress design had been well received, but after making it numerous times, I was ready to move on to something new. It seemed a shame to retire it, so I decided to try my hand at turning it into a pattern. That first pattern took me months to complete because I had a lot of new ground to break. Still, I found the process immensely satisfying. Despite the dress’s popularity, and all my hard work, I was still very unsure of myself when it came to actually publishing the pattern. In November of 2011, I decided test the waters and offer my nearly completed pattern to a few seamstresses willing to take it for a test run. Eve, was one of the first seamstresses to take me up on the offer.
Eve: Her pattern was very well done and I was impressed! I wrote to her telling her so. I had mentioned that I wished I had her talent so I could develop all my hand drawn bits of paper patterns into something as professional looking as hers. So many people were suggesting and asking me to sell patterns. She (Shari) wrote back and said she had an idea… The rest is history!
We'd love to hear from you. Leave a comment and tell us which Keepers Dolly Duds pattern design you love most!
Thanks, everyone!

Wow!! Such an amazing collection!! I love the details and historical outfits. I think my favorite is the Side Tie Collar Dress, though it is very hard to pick just one!!
Meg’s ball gown is my fav!
Loving the 1920s ones
Love ball gowns and wedding dresses. I was recently given some fabric that will be suitable for my first attempt at a coat or cape. BTW I love Anne of Green Gables too!
I especially love Meg’s Ballgown!
I like the historical period costumes. I also like that there are patterns for different size dolls.
I love the historical dresses – especially the ones from the 1700s and 1800s. I don’t think I can choose a favorite!
I think my favorite of your patterns (at least today! you have so many nice ones) is the Nancy and Mary Jane pattern, as it reminds me of dresses I wore when I was growing up in the 1950s. I hope you’ll make it available in other sizes, too (I have RRFF and Little Darlings dolls, as well as American Girls). I love the featured style (Rising Star), too, with all its details. Again, would like to see it for other dolls.
Rising Star is as cute as a button in my favourite shade of pink! I love it!
“Tea with the governess” and “Jo’s writing dress” are my favorites, but all the patterns are beautiful.
Love Meg’s ballgown – it super cute.
My first KDD pattern was Prarie Ruffles as I was doing a program on the westward movement of our pioneers. Next, a program on women’s fashion 1900 – 1970 using almost entirely KDD patterns. Next onto the “Little Women Series” So needless to say I have many Keepers Dolly Duds patterns, but my favorite so far has been the “1914 Pleated Frock” pattern, love the detail, but it went together so easily with such great directions.
I enjoyed making doll clothes when I was younger too. Mom’s old singer (the one you have to operate with both feet) was easy to operate and quiet too. Your outfits are right up my alley!!!
I love all the historical patterns, the carolers cloak caught my eye the last few months and am getting that pattern this week. The colonial outfit that was SWC target pattern in July looks like a lot of fun and I can’t wait to get material for it!
I have several patterns that are waiting to be used. Thanks for the chance to win the dress!
Lovely patterns. Easy to follow directions!
I love your patterns Eve! One of the first patterns I bought on Pixie Faire was Prairie Ruffles, a very favorite of mine. I love to see what you’re creating in your Facebook group. Thanks for sharing your creations with us.
Adorable
I am approaching 70, and still love dolls and making little outfits. Love the historic American Girl dolls, as does my granddaughter. The Rising Star outfit is precious, but every design is cute!
I really love your Edwardian Era dresses.
The Rising Star is my favourite as it turns out! Like a lot of others, I have many of Eve’s patterns!
I love all of your patterns.
note to Shari- I have been to Prince Edward Island and Green Gables. It is amazing - so interestingly beautiful. Hope you get to see it.
Aesthetically I LOVE the downtown 1920’s pattern. But I’m not likely to make that any time soon. I wore some variation of the 1940’s dress to school most days. Plaids and checks mostly. Mine generally had a straight waistline and a Peter Pan collar usually white. For Sunday there was always a plaid taffeta dress. I remember having at different times yellow, red, blue [my favorite], green, brown. My favorite pattern for the moment for my RRFF is the Bib Playsuit with the little blouse. I can sew a nice little blouse like that by hand sitting in a comfortable chair listening to music. I might even make hand worked buttonholes. With a pretty blouse like that Sara can have her playsuit to move around in and any number of pretty little gathered skirts[I have been making these without a pattern for myself and everybody else since junior high.] in plaids or novelty prints or eyelet or denim and confidently pack her Altoids box suitcase for anywhere she is likely to go. I also like the shapely understated look of the Town and Country Dress.
I have several patterns. I like them all..
I love all 18" doll outfits but Adore Megs ballgown! Wish I had one ;}
I love the variety of patterns offered. My favorite one is the spring drindl.
I love Eve Coleman patterns. I used to follow her dress creations on line and try to make something similar. When she offered her first pattern of course, I had to have it. Eve’s doll dresses were so much more detailed than other patterns I had purchased and yet easy to follow and sew a beautiful outfit. I have been buying her patterns and creating doll dresses ever since. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love vintage patterns – love the sweet summer days pattern but really they are all great.
OMG! No WAY! I can choose just ONE. I have nearly ALL of her 18" patterns and a few of the smaller ones. LOVE! her designs. Patterns are detailed. Good at instructions and they fit! I know, Shari! Thank you, too! You all make a GREAT team. Please keep it up.
Gosh it’s hard to pick just one. I’m going to go with Meg’s Ball gown (today – tomorrow it could be entirely different! LOL!)
I love all of the historical patterns; the attention to detail and the trueness of the dresses to the specific period.
I love the little women inspired patterns from KDD! I’m currently working on Amy’s School Dress for my Addy!
Lovely patterns. So well done and easy to follow.
I love all the historical patterns.
I love KDD Regency era patterns the most!
I have always loved Keeper Dolly Duds and have been using the patterns for many years. I will continue to create ensembles for my Etsy Store from these patterns and give credit where credit is due – Keeper Dolly Duds.
I love all the historical dresses especially the ones from the timeframe of story Little Women but my favorite dress is the Librarian’s Assistant because I am a retired teacher and I wore various jumpers similar to that to work. Many of which I had made.
My story is much like yours. Born in 1955 I would watch my mother see on her treadle sewing machine and use the scrapes to make my own dolls and cloths. I would have to use blocks on the treadle for my feet to reach it. I have several of your patterns and I love all of them. My favorite is the Side Collar Dress and my 2nd is the Rising Star since those points challenge me and I love a challenge. Thank you for sharing your talents with us
Love the dress and all your patterns. Will be sewing again for my granddaughters! 😀
I’ve been drooling over KDD dresses since the eBay days. I was thrilled when Eve and Shari started offering patterns! I can’t possibly choose a favorite, they’re all so perfect!
My favorites are the Spring Dirndl and the Prairie Ruffles dress.
Thank you for the giveaway! Little Women has always been one of my favorite books so naturally I love the dresses Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy!
Definitely the study hall pantsuit and jumper!
Meee tooo!! I was born in 1958… my mom had a wizard sewing machine from Western Auto. She sewed for the public (out if necessity and make our clothes) I too, was blessed with scraps of fabric tossed to the floor… a dull needle and thread scraps…my dolls were often dressed in patchwork…but I was allowed to make mistakes, start over, and PLAY! Bless you my good mommy.
I have almost every pattern Eve (and Shari) have created and to name just one is very difficult …… but I would say KDD 15 – Regency Pinafore …. I love the complete look it gives and the interesting sleeves!
I could identify with the store of sewing for her dolls while her mom sewed for her. This is how I learned to sew also!
I would choose Coat Essentials. Very nice pattern!
I love the white details down the front! Super sweet design!
Love all the designs and the details make them so very special. I’m looking forward to making a few for the 18” dolls.
I absolutely love KDD designs! I have several and have even tested one or two. The little overalls’ that I tested sold almost immediately! You have an amazing eye for detail and your ideas are always spot on!
I have a few of the KDD patterns and just got Sweet 70s Dress and Downtown 1920s Dress and hat. I’m looking forward particularly to trying the second dress because of the bias detail and the hat. My dolls love outfits with accessories, especially hats.
Eve’s story of her early childhood sewing is a lot like my own. My Barbie doll’s wardrobe had many of my creations always held together with a big button! I love Eve’s historical patterns and her attention to detail. A look at Eve’s catalog is always an enjoyable experience!
I love all of the KDD patterns! I think my favorite was the pattern that provided alternate collar options for several of the existing dress patterns. I am not always good at making style adjustments on the fly and appreciate the versatility.
Beautiful! I, too, am not a big fan of modern dress styles; too much emphasis on ‘skin-tight’ and less on quality details. Keep up the good work!
Love her historical clothing patterns. They look like the real deal. Thank you Cinnamon for the awesome giveaways.😘❤️💋
My favorite is Meg’s Ballgown but I love ALL the patterns!!!
So cute! Just wish I had more time to sew—maybe when the rush of summer is over . . . .
I love all these dresses. I especially love the historic dresses. The details are incredible.
I love so many of the KDD patterns. I am glad to know how well Eve and Shari work together, I thought for awhile, they were the same person because I also TA patterns, a lot. Both of them do such beautiful work.
I love these fashions! For some reason I was born too late to wear them myself so I enjoy putting them on my dolls!
All the patterns are so beautiful and so easy to make. I love all of them! They are my favorites.
I could not pick a favorite they are all so cute and so detailed. I do have several of them and have made so many different dresses and my girls just love the details on them.
The patterns look so nice – really like the Sweet Summer Days design
The patterns that come from KDD are inspiring. The ease of use, the detail in the designs and the amazing fashion once it’s all put together. Never gets old creating from her designs. Thank you!
What a gorgeous dress. It is so beautifully designed
All the patterns look great. Directions are easy to follow.
I love the look of all the Keepers Dolly Duds patterns. I couldn’t pick a favorite but I do tend to lean a bit more to the more modernish look.
I don’t think I could pick a single favorite, they’re all so beautiful! I like all the 1930s dresses, since I have Kit (:
Sweet dresses. I have a few of her patterns. Would love to win this dress.
All of my great granddaughter’s have loved the dresses that I made with Eve Coleman’s patterns. They especially liked the later era dresses. Can’t wait to see what Eve does next.
I love all the patterns and have many
Absolutely love your dresses. They remind me of growing up with my favourite dolls. It’s something uou remember forever.
I am a relatively new sewer and I love KDD patterns because they are so detailed. I love sewing historical fashions so I enjoy all KDD patterns but if I had to chose a favorite it would be the Town and Country dress. I have pictures of my mom wearing very similar style dresses (many of which she sewed herself!) during the 1960s so I know it is very historically accurate!
I have most of all your patterns… the 60 and 70 are my favourite ones as I made most of my own clothes then and now I have your patterns to make them in doll size. Thanks for helping me relive my youth making these outfits for my grandchildren dolls.
I love ALL of your patterns! I can’t pick a favorite. I love how they are so easy to make because your directions are clear and easy to understand, but the actual dress or outfit looks so amazing, I can’t believe that I actually made it. That’s because the designs are are so well thought out and creative.
Love all your patterns and own many. Always waiting for what the next pattern will be! Especially love ther Rising Star!
I agree with others, too hard to pick a favorite.
I love them all. I have a passion for Historical clothing. I just finished Nancy and Mary and am working on Williamsburg and the Colonial Day dress!
How am I supposed to choose just “A” KDD pattern..oh help! The care and love, that goes into each of Ms.Coleman’s designs…there are no words. Each one is IMHO is as unique as the designer :) I love her work so much!! She is a natural! And I am choosing ? ’MEG’S BALL GOWN’..for all sized dolls…sans the crinoline(ew,sorry, memories) Thankyou.
I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite. I love historical patterns, and always look forward to each new pattern you create. Keep designing!
Eve, your patterns were the patterns that got me hooked on sewing for dolls! I can’t remember a time that I didn’t love sewing and I began much as you did, sewing from scraps my mom would give me. As an adult, I had 3 daughters who didn’t want to play with dolls but they gave me grandchildren who did! I’m still finding my way in deciding what I love best but your patterns inspire me to be creative! I especially love the “Little Women” patterns and have made them in every size (especially love the RRFF size)! Thank you so much for creating the perfect patterns with all the trimmings and making them so easy to follow along with. And I’m so happy that you and Shari are able to work together because it makes them especially easy to use and all the details are perfect!
I have so many of the Keepers Dolly Duds patterns and love them all. I love all the detail to these historical fashions.
I truly do not have a favorite because I have tried to own all of her patterns. I still have some on my wishlist. I love historic costume and have a similar background, including degrees in clothing design and child development… thus children’s clothing design. Since these lovely dolls are scale models of children, I can use those skills in my retirement to do what I did as a child, just with training and lots of practice. I absolutely adore Eve’s work and salute her dedication to the craft.
my favorite is sweet summer days pattern love the halter top it so cute
What’s not to love about the entire collection! I so appreciate the sizes not just for the 18" dolls, but also the WW, and RR. Lovely designs, with exquisite detail. Right now, Sweet Summer Days is my favorite, so many fun summer fabric options for this pattern for 18" and 14.5!!
I find these patterns to be so lovely. I appreciate that different doll lines get these wonderful designs. I really like the Pilgrim outfits with all the complicated extras which just "make’ the outfits shine.
I love all Eve Coleman’s patterns, I check often to see if there is a new pattern i can buy, I haven’t made all the patterns i have but the ones i have made were not extremely hard and beautiful when finished. My favorite is Prairie Ruffles!
I love the incredible tailoring and details of all of Eve Coleman’s patterns. My current favourite is Meg’s Ball Gown, but that changes all the time as I discover new patterns from Eve’s collection.
I don’t have just one favorite. I love all the patterns. I love the attention to the detail and the fact that they are designed with a specific period.
I don’t have just one favorite – I love all the historical dresses!!

The library assistant dress is just lovely.
