We've put together this super quick and easy tutorial to make your own doll-sized scrunchie! This adorable hair accessory is perfect for recreating your favorite '80s look or capturing the cool-girl look with modern styling.
Scrunchie Making Supplies:
Step 1: Cut out your strip of fabric to the above measurements. Press the fabric if needed.
Step 2: Fold the strip in half lengthwise and pin.
Step 3: Sew along the length of the fabric with 1/4" seam allowance. Trim seam allowance close to stitching line being very careful not to clip through the stitching.
Step 4: To turn the strip right-sides-out, pin a safety pin to one edge and feed it through the tube of fabric. When the safety pin reaches the other end of the tube, the fabric can be pulled right-sides-out.
Step 5: Now that the scrunchie fabric is right-sides-out, attach a safety pin to one end of the 5-inch piece of elastic.
Step 6: Use the safety pin the feed the elastic through the fabric tube. Be sure to pin the end of the elastic to the fabric edge so it doesn't get lost inside.
Step 7: Pull both ends of the elastic and tie in a knot. (The pins in the above photo are simply holding things in place for visibility.)
Step 8: Feed the tied elastic back into the fabric. At the fabric opening, pull one edge of the fabric over the other, letting the raw edge of the fabric roll or fold over itself to create a clean edge. Sew a straight line over this fabric opening to secure.

I love to use scrunchies.
I like barrettes and bows especially for little girls and dolls. For me, my hair is too short for any accessories.
Love scrunchies! Thanks!
I wore a bandana, handkerchief style.
Headbands and sparkly hair clips are my go to but I really want to try some of these scrunchies for my girls hair. Can’t wait.
My favorite hair accessory for dolls would be a simple scrunchy…for me personally it’s nothing but gel and spray because my hair is so short…haha
Back in the 80s when my hair was long, layered and kind of wild; I mostly wore combs, hair sticks, leather barrettes with sticks, and yes, I wore scrunchies, but they were velvet with beading all around them.
The 80’s really had great skirts.
I have very long hair and I use regularly pony tail holders, scrunchies and barrettes.
Headbands have always seemed to me to be so chic. Unfortunately, I don’t think I wear them well. But my dolly does! And scrunchies, too!
I like pretty hair buckles or clips
When I dress up for a special occasion, I braid my hair and cross it over the top of my head. Then I put artificial flowers, usually yellow daisies, tucked in above my ear on one side. I also like hats. Thanks for the contest and the tutorial!
Love scrunches, but also I make woven headbands which are fun to make with different ribbon to match or accent an outfit
Gosh, I guess I am falling behind in the hair accessories. I really like some knit headbands I saw and want to make some the next time I do an exercise or yoga outfit. I want to make scrunchies, too. Thanks so much for the opportunity and all the ideas. Happy stitching!
I often wear a hairband but at 64 I wear a silver grey one most and a black one on occasion. Love that.
My favorite hair accessory is actually a scrunchie because it is great for hot weather. It also can be made out of lots of colorful fabrics!
My Mother always wore a head band. I didn’t like how they made my head hurt!
I love bows on braids or headbands
I love bows on braids or headbands
I never put anything in my own hair but I love to put bows in my doll’s hair!!
I have always used sunglasses to hold my hair back like a headband (and now reading glasses). While not a traditional hair accessory, they aren’t as tight as headbands, and so much more comfortable!
My favorite hair accessories are bow barrettes!
The simple elastic hairband My go to easy favorite. Multiple colors, sizes Easy on the pocketbook- can’t go wrong hair accessory
hair claws are the best
My favorite was scrunchies, and I made my own to match outfits.
My hair was never long enough for a scrunchies, but my Grand daughters think they are great.
My favorite was always the fancy plastic ones with the bar type fastener. Really didn’t wear them much. Had short curly hair and didn’t need to keep it out of my face.
My favorite hair accessory is a headband. I hate hair in my face!
I used to wear barretts!
I don’t know if I have a favorite!
I used to wear scrunchies when I was younger!
Claw clips are my favorite!
I like headbands for myself and flower crowns for dolls.
My favorite hair accessory used to be the elastic bands for ponytails. I got my hair cut short yesterday so no longer need them. The little scrunchie is so cute. My dolls will love some.
I love hair bows!
I loved headbands and hats when I was little, now I love the hair ties that are like tshirt material!
My dolls are rockin headbands made with FOE and cloth gathered flower embellishment.
The basic bobby pin is my favorite hair accessory as you can attach a flower, bow or just about anything to it, or just use it plain.
My favorite hair accessory is the long-vanished oval leather barrette that had a hole at either end with a stick to keep it in place. Now that I have longer hair (shoulder-length) I’d love to be able to pull my hair off my neck and on my head, securing it with the barrette. Can’t find one anywhere!
In the 80’s my go to was a scrunchie. Now I have a pixie cut so no accessories for me!
Love this scrunchy idea – so easy! I think it could be a new favorite!
My favorite hair accessory for dolls is the claw clip. For me, It is scissors and a blow dryer!!!
When I was 11 my mother got me this big beautiful bow barrette that I wore @ Christmas with just part of my hair pulled back and the rest in ringlets. I loved my hair then and I loved the big beautiful bow.
I love old-fashioned hair combs, but they tend to fall out of my fine, straight hair.
Defiantly a tiara. I’m a KC Royals fan!
My favorite hair accessory would be a tiara!! But since I never wear one (or even own one!) I’ll have to say the humble pony tail elastic!
I love the hair clips and the scrunches
I always like clip barrettes.
My favorite hair accessory is the double combs that. Are combined with decorations between the two. There are so many ways to wear them. Or the banana combs.
I love scrunchies and lots of clips
My favorite hair accessory is a hat.
My favorite thing to use in hair are headbands, they go well with most outfits. And I enjoy making them. I do like the scrunchie pattern you just showed us how to make- I think it will nice to make!
Thank you for the pattern!
I love hats on dolls!
My hair is short now, but back in the 80’s it was waist length and I wore all sorts of hair accessories. I had quite a few large barrettes that I used to clip my hair back in a ponytail — one had a large fabric knot on it, one was wrapped in decorative cording, one was wide and covered with a band of rhinestones. But probably the hair accessory I most loved was the pair of decorated hair ”chop sticks” that I tucked in when I wore a bun!
Having long hair and 7 granddaughters, I always had “ponytails” on my wrist for myself and anyone who needed one. Then the big C hit me and I lost all my hair (well the kids 7= 4 boys) helped shave my head before it fell out. Still trying to grow it out now and with the c-19 I don’t get to spend time with the girls, but i still wear at least one elastic on my wrist. So definitely hair elastics “ponytails” are my favorite.
I do love a nice sparkly headband. Lol
I like headbands, especially ones with bows or flowers for little girls
-My hair used to be very short but now that I have enough hair to pull back into a braid or ponytail I like cloth-covered elastic bands. I have a collection of many colors to go with whatever I’m wearing.
My favorite hair accessory is the scrunchy. You can get them in all sorts or fabrics and colors, with bling or without. And now you can make them to match clothes you make for your dolls!!
My favorite hair accessory is a hand-crafted barrette I purchase at craft fairs.
I just love these scrunchies! Can’t wait to make some.
My favorite, most used now hair accessory is a plain elastic band. I used to use scrunchies in the 80"s!
My favorite hair accessories are pretty barrettes.
My favorite has to be the scrunching.
I made these for my daughters to match all their outfits.
Thank you for the pattern!
I look forward to making some for my granddaughter’s dolls.
My favorite is a hair clip! For bad hair days there’s always hats too.
Definitely a “chip clip!”
I kinda lean towards barrettes for both doll and self.
my favorite hair accessory is a hat!
Definitely the scrunchie.
The Scrunchie is our favorite hair accessory!
My favorite hair accessory is a tiara, of course! I also love clips and headbands.
I can’t live without my hair elastics. When working out I need it ALL out of my face.
In the 60’s I had a donut for my hair. I would make a pony tail then put my hair thru the donut, then wrap my hair around the donut evenly covering it securing with pins at the bottom and lower sides of the donut. It was easier when someone else did it for me!! I also ironed my hair if someone had the board and iron set up.I had flat straight blond hair. It is now ash blond/light brown With gray.
My favorite hair accessory is a hat. Keepers’ Train Station is one of my favorites, and is so versatile.
pony tail holder
my favorite hair accessory is something with bling
I always loved wearing the horse tail comb. I still have the pretty blue & white one I wore in high school! I can’t wait to start making doll scrunchies- thank you so much for the tutorial!
When I starting working as a housekeeper in 2000 I made my own uniform tops. I always made a scrunchie to match each top
Thank you so much!! Scrunchies are so handy!! ;)
My favorite will definitely be the scrunchy
Finally! An easy way to keep my doll’s hair neat.
Doll scrunchies! What a cute idea! and a doll from the 80s? You’re right, it certainly doesn’t seem “historical” to me! Can’t wait to see her though!
My favorite is cute barettes
When I started working as a housekeeper in 2000 I made my own uniforms because I didn’t have money to buy. I always made a scrunching to match each top
Headband for sure until I got the Dorothy Hamel wedge cut.
Growing up, it was definitely the banana clip!
I really love flower crowns, or floral hair clips, but I don’t wear them as often as I would like.
My favorite hair accessories are scrunchies, headbands and hair clips.
Beaded hair clips
I rocked the 80s hair! Thick curly hair….and then a perm on top if that! So glad those days are gone. I was huge fan of banana clips, these days my go to is a headband …or dollar store cheater glasses!
My favorite hair accessory is the fabric band that certainly wasn’t available in the 80s. They come in multiple colors and don’t pull hair. Both my youngest granddaughter and I have waist length hair so this is important.
I was a teenager in the 1980s and have loved scrunchies ever since; I still wear them! I can’t wait to make the scrunchie for dolls. I always like to add matching or coordinating hats or hair accessories to the doll dresses I make. I also love the yarn hair ties and the ones with the plastic baubles at the ends that were so popular in the 1970s. My mom used to do my very long hair in a ponytail, 2 pigtails or long braids and she always finished the look with the yarn ties or the bauble ties. Who would have thought hair ties could conjure up such sweet memories!
Perfect for my favorite doll
I liked the banana clip in the 80’s but my hair has always been baby fine so i could never wear it. i did wear the hair bows that were popular in the mid 80s as well as the tied bandanna look.
I like any hair clip that has sparkles or shines. Thank you for the free tutorial.
My favorite hair accessory is the scrunchy. I have very fine hair and normal rubber bands break my hair off.
I love any kind of ponytail holder that keeps hair off the back of my neck. Scrunches are my favorite. Banana clips, not so much.
My favorite hair accessory is a thick, strong, Latex free elastic for my super thick hair. Those elastics are very hard to find.
I love the scrunchies. No hair moves over my eyes that way.
