Mini quilts serve many purposes:
With these benefits in mind, let’s dive into the key steps for creating a beautiful mini quilt.
Fabric selection is crucial to achieving a cohesive and visually appealing mini quilt. Here are some tips to guide your choices:
1. Use 100% Cotton Fabric
Cotton is the easiest fabric to work with because it’s durable, presses well, and comes in an endless variety of prints and colors. Avoid slippery or stretchy fabrics, as they can be challenging to piece accurately. Some of our favorite premium quilting cottons are made by Moda Fabrics, Ruby Star, Free Spirit, Tilda, Liberty Fabrics, Art Gallery, Riley Blake and sold at a variety of specialty quilt shops locally or online through retailers like: Pink Door, Missouri Star, Stitchin' Heaven, Cotton Cuts, Fat Quarter Shop, Hawthorne Supply Co, and more! Here at Pixie Faire, we sell limited amounts of Pixie Pack kits that frequently feature these fabrics in coordinating bundle sets too!
2. Pick Small-Scale Prints
Because mini quilts are small, large-scale prints may get lost or look disproportionate. Instead, choose small florals, polka dots, gingham, or tiny geometric prints. Solid fabrics can also add contrast and balance.
3. Plan a Color Scheme
Mini quilts look best when colors complement each other. Consider using:
If unsure, try laying out fabric swatches together before making a final decision.
To make a mini doll quilt, gather the following tools:
For beginners, simple block patterns like these are ideal:
Using your rotary cutter and quilting ruler, cut your fabric pieces based on your chosen pattern. If making a 4-patch quilt, for example, you’ll need four equal-sized squares for each block. If you were using Mini Charm Pack squares, each square is 2.5", if 4 are sewn together to create a block, the block would measure 4" square (after it's sewn to a second block.
Now comes the fun part—quilting! Here are some simple quilting ideas:
If using a sewing machine, a walking foot helps to feed the layers evenly.
If you’re new to binding, self-binding (folding the backing fabric over the edges) is an easier alternative.
Once comfortable with basic mini quilts, try these ideas:
Making a mini doll quilt is a fun, creative project that allows you to practice quilting techniques without the commitment of a large quilt. By choosing the right fabric, using essential tools, and following simple piecing and quilting methods, you can create a beautiful, heirloom-quality quilt.
Whether for a child’s doll collection, a decorative piece, or a quilting practice session, your mini quilt will be a charming addition to any setting. So gather your scraps, fire up your sewing machine, and start stitching!
Happy quilting! ✂️ 🧵

What is your favorite style quilt? Feel free to tell us any fond memories you have associated with a treasured quilt too!
I really like the look of log cabin quilts. I have made a few for my kids’ dolls.
I like traditionally pieced quilts that look intricate but are made of simple blocks.
I have made so many quilt patterns but the last few years my favorite has become “grandmother’s fan”. It started with a mother wanting to turn her mother’s clothing into lap quilts for the grandchildren. She had been so afraid to give into anyone and allow the cutting up of her memories and had kept things boxed for 15 years! I knew immediately what to do and asked that she just trust me. She had no ideas for a pattern so the fan was perfect and would allow enough pieces for all 5 grands. The clothing was all 70s styles and colors and ugly but they all came together in the end.
By word of mouth, I continue to take requests and never know what clothing I will receive. The smiles and tears make this a worthwhile hobby.
I liove this!
I’m in a quilt for years. I picked it up when I was in my late 20s. I’ve made bed quilts. I’ve made large throws. I’ve made baby quilts and I’ve made miniature quilts. I did a so long with you a few years ago making a dog quilt. I would have to say miniature quilts are probably my favorite because they are done so quickly.
I like to keep my doll quilts quite simple. Tiny squares or triangles have been my go to designs. I recently did an eye spy with 100 unique 1 inch finished squares!
I have been quilting for over 40 years and love every step of the process. My most favorite genre is traditional but I am enjoying seeing the ‘new’ contemporary styles. Making a doll quilt is a great way to learn or try a new technique.
Thank you for all the lovely patterns and etc! I love making my own pattern quilts up!!
My wonderful step-grandmother loved making quits for everyone she could think of … including one for one of my dolls. I don’t think she ever heard of machine quilting. All her quits were quilted by hand. All the tops of her quits were made from flour sacks.
This is a fun project to do with my daughter, who is learning about sewing now!
I like all quilts – as long as they are brightly coloured!
I love a double wedding ring quilt!
Great give away package. Currently making a baby quilt. Also teaching my granddaughter to make a doll quilt.
I have often thought that I’d like to try making a doll quilt. Maybe this will get me started!
I like pieced to use up all my scraps. I make charity quilts a lot for needy people.
I love the look of antique style quilts. Simple blocks.
What fun things you all come up with. These would be so fun to do and make for special dolls and also young girls to enjoy with their dolly friends. My treasured quilt is one from my grandmother and kept and cared for safely. I just found hand pieced diamond shaped pieces hand done and hope to find out how to place them on a top layer. They were in the back drawer of my great Grandmother treadle made in 1903. Treasures for sure
I just discovered crumb quilting and salvage quilting. What a great way to use every bit of all those miniscule scraps and salvages. Did you know some of them have other words than the manufacturer ’s name. And the little colored spots and shapes add fun to your quilts.
My favorite quilts are scrap quilts with lots of different colors.
I love to make scrappy mini quilts and I love the challenge of using as many pieces as I can. Hope to continue developing my skills
Mini quilts have always been my favorite kind of quilt to do. I’ve exchanged mini quilts sevral times with others around the USA and even exchanged one with a lady in Kyiv, Ukraine. I made her a mexican star quilt and she hand appliqued a beautiful, Ukrainian flower quilt for me. They were both around 18″×18″, perfect for doll quilts. Tilda fabrics are definitely a favorite of mine! If you go to Tildfa’s website, you can often times get free patterns (or you used to be able to).
I am anxious to get started! What delightful addition to doll clothes!
I am making my youngest granddaughter a quilt right now. I will use leftover material to make a quilt for her 18" doll as well.
Star quilts or beaded quilts are my favorite
My favorite quilts are doll quilts made with reproduction civil war fabrics.
I like traditional patchwork quilts.
I would love to make doll quilts for my grandkids. I inherited an older sewing machine that can be used for quilting. So I need to try it out. Thank you for being so kind for this offer.
This looks like so much fun !!!! have you thought of selling just the pattern? this would make a great scrap buster. A bit of applique would do well too. I can think of so much that can be done to these little quilts including several holiday charity events coming up.
I enjoy making log cabin quilts!! It would be so fun to make a doll quilt for our bonus granddaughter!!
I’m not a quilter, but have made some scrappy flaps for Sew Powerful purses. I’ve also tried some small quilt kits like for pillow tops and/or wall hangings, but wasn’t very successful. Oh, I almost forgot, I did make a t-shirt quilt and learned that quilting is just not my thing. Doll size quilts are about as big as I want to go!
I like strip quilts.
I don’t have a favorite style of quilt and don’t make adult-size quilts, but I do enjoy making doll-size patchwork quilts for my granddaughters’ dolls out of fabric scraps and remnants.
I LOVE 30’s reproduction fabrics!
I don’t know anything about names of quilts but I have made squares for quilts. I’ve made quilts and play mats in the shape of animals for babies. Great baby shower gifts!
I don’t know that I have a favorite style, but when I was in college the ladies from my church back home made me a quilt. I think each lady made their own honeycomb section with odd fabrics they had (which included some polyester pieces). Then they were connected with sort of a minty green in between each non-matching section and a lime green around the outside. Although the hodgepodge style wasn’t particularly pretty, the quilt was somewhat plush and had a soft blue flannel backing. So, it was quite cozy!
Just finished a crazy quilt doll size quilt top using FPP technique to create 3" finished squares. I will edge-to-edge quilt it on my embroidery machine. Sew fun!
No one in my family made quilts, so I had to learn how to do it myself. Back in the 70’s they had books with quilt blocks, but no directions on how to sew them together! But I tried anyway with limited success. Over the years I have discovered that the best results come from accurate cutting and 1/4" seams. When the rotary cutters came out, it was a revolution to my quilting! I have always liked Log Cabin and enjoy making both full size quilts and doll size quilts. They are so cute on a doll bed!
My favorite kind of quilt is applique. I have been making quilts from miniature to full size for over 50 yrs. I now have several granddaughters and so I am back to making doll size quilts. I like the fact that every one can be different and color choices are unending.
My favorite quilt was one my mother had when I was young. It was a crazy quilt with all kinds of fabrics and shapes. There were panels of the mismatched pieces sewn together. I remember velvet, brocade, corduroy and satin fabric, along with cottons. The binding was a pink satin. I loved touching all the fabrics and teaching the funny shapes! Such a lovely memory!
I love quilts. I have an aunt who makes cancer quilts, so I have a vested interest in quilting, but i just don’t have the inclination to make full-sized quilts.
I love all quilts but the nine patch is one of my favorite. My mom was a hand quilter, did everything by hand. She won ribbons for her quilts and could do the tiniest stitches. She did 12 stitches to an inch, I don’t even know how she did that. My dream is to do a quilt one day. I think I will start with a doll quilt. : )
I have made a few doll quilts and really enjoyed the process. The tutorial has lighted my desire to make more. Oh, the possibilities!
I enjoy most all sorts of quilts, but I have been drawn to half-square triangle quilts lately.
Iam self taught Quilter and don’t have a favorite style . I know the basics skills of quilting thus creation of quilting are made from fabric panels or blocks rectangle of fabric to create Quilt. Don’t always used a pattern but created wow giveaway of fabric to make the perfect combination of color and design to make a doll size quilt.
I like to make scrappy quilts. The mini bundle of small prints is perfect for a doll quilt.
What a fun idea! Love quilting; going to have to try a small scale design!
So much Fun. A great way to try out different quilt variations and bfast enough not to be overwhelming. I love nine patch quilts.
My favourite pattern is the Bear Paw. Or the Dresden plate.
I like scrappy quilts but I have made a few doll size quilts with patterns that were more fashionable in the early days of American quilting. I have an antique doll bed and the quilts look lovely draped on top of the bed.
I have never tried making a mini quilt but would love to.
I personally love any quilt but a patchwork quilt is my favorite. I love Tilda fabrics and would love a chance to make a quilt with them. Quilts are filled with so much love how could anyone not enjoy laying in bed under a handmade quilt.
I love all the different quilt patterns. I cherish my quilt that my mother made for me. She painted roses on squares and set them together. I will always keep it close to my heart.
I have been planning a quilt from men’s shirts. I have only gotten to the cut apart into useable fabric. (these are worn out shirts of my husband’s)
I haven’t done much quilting, but I like to try new designs.
I love scrappy quilts & mini quilts. The best is when the grandchildren want to help!
I love variations on classic designs, like nine patch and log cabin. I have made several full-size quilts but no doll quilts.
Doll size quilts are a fun way to try out patterns. And I love the small size.
My favorite quilt patterns are the simplest ones. I do love the picture quilts but I found that they take way to much time and skill. And, doll quilts can be made into excellent placemats too!
I have been sewing for over 50 years but never made a quilt before. I would love to learn how and this may be a good place to start.
I recently made my first quilt, doll size, using the Tropical Illusion pattern and Tilda Winter Blossom fabrics. I love how it turned out! Definitely not perfect but so adorable. Better to view from a distance. The Tilda fabrics were great to work with and pressed nicely. I have been eyeing the Tilda Spring collection and brainstorming my next doll quilt ever since I finished my Christmas quilt. I just love the colors in this bundle.
I don’t have a favorite but have been wanting to make doll quilts for dolls with clothes that I want to donate to a charity organization.
Doll quilts are so much fun to make! Most of mine have been scrappy quilts using the leftovers from my bigger quilts.
I don’t have a favorite style, but symmetry is a must for me. I also like quilts that are tied off rather than actually quilted.
I like Log Cabin and Disappearing 9-Patch for small quilts. I have 2 unfinished quilts that I’m hoping to complete at least one this year.
I am a quilter and have made over a dozen doll sized quilts that I display on a special hanger in my home. I love working with small scale patterns.
Star patches
My favorite style of quilt is a completed one! As I work on my second human sized quilt I continue to be struck with how many steps it takes to get to completion. I have many triangle scraps so I think I’ll make a flying geese doll quilt with them next!
I have a hexagonal plate quilt my great grandmother made from worn out, twice turned clothes from her family. The ‘batting’ she used was from large pieces of shirts and skirts which were too stained to wear as clothes. Nothing went to waste in her life! Such recycling!
I love scrappy quilts and batik quilts.
I’ve never made a quilt; this sounds like a great place to start!
Love quilting and choosing the fabric ❤️
I’ve made quilted ornaments before, but never made anything larger than that. I’ve seen the lovely quilts being offered (even purchased a few patterns), but have yet to find the right materials to start. Would love to make my dolls a blanket to match my human sized one my grandmother created for me when I was a child :)
I love the Tiles fabrics! They are easy to work with, and look great on the dolls.
I’ve been wanting to see a doll quilt and to use that to teach my daughter to sew with the machine. Thanks for the simple helps in your post.
My Big Mama made quilts. My Mama made quilts. Even my daughter has made quilts. I’ve only finished one doll size quilt….time to try more!!!
I love many styles of quilts, but would have say that the Grandmother’s Flower Garden is my very favorite. The little hexies are so appealing! I am in progress of making my first one for my granddaughter now. At this stage, it’s quite portable!
I cant wait for the chance to make a doll quilt. so exciting…
I purchased a doll quilt pattern several years ago before I learned the tricks of making HSTs. Since then, I have made almost all styles of quilting including a T-Shirt quilt for my daughters friend who lost her grandmother and wanted her T-shirts made into a quilt. I also make patchwork tree skirts which seems to be a favorite at craft shows. My overall favorite is HSTs now that I know what I am actually doing because of the variety of outcomes you can get just by the way you lay out the HSTs. So versatile!
Thank you for the amazing chance at winning this giveaway. Love the beautiful fabric prints. I would love to try my hand at making a doll quilt.
My favorite style quilt at this time is quilting using an appliqué technique. I also like the 3D pinwheel designs. I am in y fifth year of piecing quilts and have enjoyed all that I have learned so far. I have my Great grandmother’s hand pieced quilt made with my mom’s and her siblings clothing. My mom shared that she use to watch her sew the pieces together while sitting on the porch.
Simple patchwork quilts are what I like to make.
I LOVE TO MAKE ANYTHIND MINI. I WOULD LOVE TO TRY A DOLL QUILT.
I made one quilt in 1971 and it was so crooked that I never made another one but starting again on a doll quilt sounds like fun . My favorite are the ones with 3 or 4 colors palates
Quite new to quilting but have done a couple of the 9 block. Maybe this bundle would be just the boost I need to use on the quit patterns I have purchase through Pixie Faire.
Thanks for this opportunity to enter this awesome draw.
I have always love quilting and can’t wait to try a few doll sized quilt!
I don’t consider myself a quilter, but I do love to make small quilts for my dolls. I’m not a fan of intricate patterns. A simple pattern that showcases a fabric line is my favorite.
My latest favorite quilt pattern is the gingham quilt. It comes together quickly using a strip method.
I love bright colors, flowers and star blocks.
I don’t know the names of quilt patterns but I’ve made a few. My favorites are bright colors.
I recently found a doll bed for my great niece—a mini-quilt would be perfect.
This will be perfect for teaching my granddaughters how to make a quilt. I love the tiny prints.
I love handmade quilts with many squares that make a design. Thanks for the contest.
I love quilting and would love to try a doll quilt for my granddaughter!
What a great giveaway ! I have made dozens of adult quilts but never tried doll quilts. Making use of my scraps would be ideal for these doll quilts.
Can’t wait to start this cute quilt! Love love all the pixie faire products!
I grew up helping my Grandmother make her quilts but am not very experienced with quilting so don’t have a favorite. I am looking forward to trying some doll quilts. Who knows maybe it’ll take me to trying some larger ones.
I love making doll quilts! My favorites are simple patchwork, especially if they include cute fussy-cut squares or if the squares are arranged in rainbow order.
I’ve made all sorts of quilts/blankets out of all kinds of fabrics. From jeans, upholstery fabric, flannel, fleece, and repurposing “fabric”. It’s fun to sew and create.
I have recently started some Quilt as you go projects! So much fun!

Can’t wait to try making one.
