Mini quilts serve many purposes:
With these benefits in mind, let’s dive into the key steps for creating a beautiful mini quilt.
Fabric selection is crucial to achieving a cohesive and visually appealing mini quilt. Here are some tips to guide your choices:
1. Use 100% Cotton Fabric
Cotton is the easiest fabric to work with because it’s durable, presses well, and comes in an endless variety of prints and colors. Avoid slippery or stretchy fabrics, as they can be challenging to piece accurately. Some of our favorite premium quilting cottons are made by Moda Fabrics, Ruby Star, Free Spirit, Tilda, Liberty Fabrics, Art Gallery, Riley Blake and sold at a variety of specialty quilt shops locally or online through retailers like: Pink Door, Missouri Star, Stitchin' Heaven, Cotton Cuts, Fat Quarter Shop, Hawthorne Supply Co, and more! Here at Pixie Faire, we sell limited amounts of Pixie Pack kits that frequently feature these fabrics in coordinating bundle sets too!
2. Pick Small-Scale Prints
Because mini quilts are small, large-scale prints may get lost or look disproportionate. Instead, choose small florals, polka dots, gingham, or tiny geometric prints. Solid fabrics can also add contrast and balance.
3. Plan a Color Scheme
Mini quilts look best when colors complement each other. Consider using:
If unsure, try laying out fabric swatches together before making a final decision.
To make a mini doll quilt, gather the following tools:
For beginners, simple block patterns like these are ideal:
Using your rotary cutter and quilting ruler, cut your fabric pieces based on your chosen pattern. If making a 4-patch quilt, for example, you’ll need four equal-sized squares for each block. If you were using Mini Charm Pack squares, each square is 2.5", if 4 are sewn together to create a block, the block would measure 4" square (after it's sewn to a second block.
Now comes the fun part—quilting! Here are some simple quilting ideas:
If using a sewing machine, a walking foot helps to feed the layers evenly.
If you’re new to binding, self-binding (folding the backing fabric over the edges) is an easier alternative.
Once comfortable with basic mini quilts, try these ideas:
Making a mini doll quilt is a fun, creative project that allows you to practice quilting techniques without the commitment of a large quilt. By choosing the right fabric, using essential tools, and following simple piecing and quilting methods, you can create a beautiful, heirloom-quality quilt.
Whether for a child’s doll collection, a decorative piece, or a quilting practice session, your mini quilt will be a charming addition to any setting. So gather your scraps, fire up your sewing machine, and start stitching!
Happy quilting! ✂️ 🧵

What is your favorite style quilt? Feel free to tell us any fond memories you have associated with a treasured quilt too!
I love many styles of quilts, but would have say that the Grandmother’s Flower Garden is my very favorite. The little hexies are so appealing! I am in progress of making my first one for my granddaughter now. At this stage, it’s quite portable!
I cant wait for the chance to make a doll quilt. so exciting…
I purchased a doll quilt pattern several years ago before I learned the tricks of making HSTs. Since then, I have made almost all styles of quilting including a T-Shirt quilt for my daughters friend who lost her grandmother and wanted her T-shirts made into a quilt. I also make patchwork tree skirts which seems to be a favorite at craft shows. My overall favorite is HSTs now that I know what I am actually doing because of the variety of outcomes you can get just by the way you lay out the HSTs. So versatile!
Thank you for the amazing chance at winning this giveaway. Love the beautiful fabric prints. I would love to try my hand at making a doll quilt.
My favorite style quilt at this time is quilting using an appliqué technique. I also like the 3D pinwheel designs. I am in y fifth year of piecing quilts and have enjoyed all that I have learned so far. I have my Great grandmother’s hand pieced quilt made with my mom’s and her siblings clothing. My mom shared that she use to watch her sew the pieces together while sitting on the porch.
Simple patchwork quilts are what I like to make.
I LOVE TO MAKE ANYTHIND MINI. I WOULD LOVE TO TRY A DOLL QUILT.
I made one quilt in 1971 and it was so crooked that I never made another one but starting again on a doll quilt sounds like fun . My favorite are the ones with 3 or 4 colors palates
Quite new to quilting but have done a couple of the 9 block. Maybe this bundle would be just the boost I need to use on the quit patterns I have purchase through Pixie Faire.
Thanks for this opportunity to enter this awesome draw.
I have always love quilting and can’t wait to try a few doll sized quilt!
I don’t consider myself a quilter, but I do love to make small quilts for my dolls. I’m not a fan of intricate patterns. A simple pattern that showcases a fabric line is my favorite.
My latest favorite quilt pattern is the gingham quilt. It comes together quickly using a strip method.
I love bright colors, flowers and star blocks.
I don’t know the names of quilt patterns but I’ve made a few. My favorites are bright colors.
I recently found a doll bed for my great niece—a mini-quilt would be perfect.
This will be perfect for teaching my granddaughters how to make a quilt. I love the tiny prints.
I love handmade quilts with many squares that make a design. Thanks for the contest.
I love quilting and would love to try a doll quilt for my granddaughter!
What a great giveaway ! I have made dozens of adult quilts but never tried doll quilts. Making use of my scraps would be ideal for these doll quilts.
Can’t wait to start this cute quilt! Love love all the pixie faire products!
I grew up helping my Grandmother make her quilts but am not very experienced with quilting so don’t have a favorite. I am looking forward to trying some doll quilts. Who knows maybe it’ll take me to trying some larger ones.
I love making doll quilts! My favorites are simple patchwork, especially if they include cute fussy-cut squares or if the squares are arranged in rainbow order.
I’ve made all sorts of quilts/blankets out of all kinds of fabrics. From jeans, upholstery fabric, flannel, fleece, and repurposing “fabric”. It’s fun to sew and create.
I have recently started some Quilt as you go projects! So much fun!
My favorite style quilt is a sampler quilt. I am working on a red one and a blue one for my twin baby dolls.
I have been quilting with my mom and grandmother (currently 93) since I was a child. We have made doll quilts before. I really like quilts that are a new take on an older pattern such as a twisted nine patch. My mom likes scrap quilts and crazy quilts, while Granny enjoys more intricate patterns.
I’ve made a couple of quilts or dolls and adults. lots of fun planning and selecting fabrics.
My favorite probably is a small block patchwork quilt, but I like many different styles.
I am a horrible quilter!! I made Lincoln Logs placemats that came out crooked thirty years ago. I tried to follow Cinnamon in her tutorial for a mini quilt and it was a nightmare! But I have lots of scraps and I’m going to try again. Hahaha
I’m a novice for sure🤭 Only sewed patch pieces together so far🤷🏾♀️ But I’m working on it🤩
I have made quite a few doll quilts over the past few years to match up with 18" dolls to give away at Christmastime to the toy drive at the nearby Air Force base. And, yes, each one seems to be cuter than the last! Making these doll quilts is a great way to focus all year long on this project that makes some little girls so very happy when they receive their Christmas gifts!
I have never done quilting. I have however pieced tops for pillow covers to go with a purchased quilt. I haven’t seen many quilt designs that I didn’t like. I am willing to try a few in the future when time allows it.
The only quilt I ever made was a small sampler quilt to hang on the wall.
I’ve been a quilter and art quilter for years and I so love making AGD clothes now looking forward to adding doll quilts to my sewing fun.
I seem to like pinwheels the best, Ive used bamboo for a tiny quilt. Encouraging my grand daughters to love making quilts for their friends.
I like pinwheel and bow tie designs.
My favorite style of quilt is the window. I love the way it looks when done and I can embroider or fussy cut for the actual window itself. Thank you for this opportunity. This would be “sew” fun to win!

Doll quilts offer a way to gift a quilt to a dear Friend within a limited time and budget. They are so satisifying and can become a mini memory savers of ones sewing/quilting history. If I win the bundle it will become a fresh new doll quilt. A tribute to Pixie Faire and the pleasure following it gives me. Thank you Pixie Faire
Pinwheels & stars are my 2 favorite blocks to make. 2 of my younger kids are currently learning how to quilt. They have surprised me by how quickly they’ve learned! We definitely need to try a mini size. :-)
I’m looking forward to starting my doll quilt. I like bright colors and a modern look! I will do the 4 patch to start. and a matching pillowcase and pillows.. Then on to more I did get the quilt patterns when they were on a bogo sale.
This would be a perfect project for me to work on, with my daughter, for her doll.
I adore the Double Wedding Ring pattern! So intimidating but truly gorgeous.
I’m not yet a quilter. I love looking at all of the beautiful shapes and color combinations in quilts.
Sweet mini quilt. Beginner quilter. I have made a few quilts that I gave away. Have some quilt tops completed, just need time to do so. Love all quilt patterns.
I love making quilts of all sizes. My favourite quilts are applique and for dolls nine patch quilts
Making mini quilts , actuallyall minis make me happy
Star quilts are my favorite followed by square patterns where you make each square with a unique design.
What a sweet giveaway.
I grew up with my mother making beautiful quilts, but she never taught me how.I have always thought quilting is such an opportunity to be creative and yet also use up scraps! While I thought it would be fun, I’ve been overwhelmed at the idea of completing a large quilt. I think doing doll quilts would be a much easier way to begin quilting, as well as to connect with my daughter and hopefully future granddaughter(s) one day. I really like PF’s Patch Play, Rosie’s Windows, and the Strippy holiday quilt designs!
My don’t have a favorite but I love them all. I do love the piecing and I love making something nice out of scraps and leftover fabric.
I’ve been looking for a new craft skill to try and this is perfect for learning how to quilt! I love to sew but quilting has always seemed a bit daunting! What a great way try and to practice such a beautiful, time-honoured craft!

My favorite is a patchwork quilt made with tiny, delicate prints.
I am always happy to add more small prints to my fabrics. Small, srappy quilts are my favorites.
I enjoy both modern and traditional quilts. There are a many different styles and I would love to try them all 😊. I met my first quilt when I was about 12 years old while on a family road trip in Idaho. It was love at first st sight! The maker of the quilt even gave me a printed quilt pattern for a patriotic quilt. I still have it these 50+ years later.
I am a quilter and I love nine patch quilts, log cabin, scrappy quilts.
I love a classic log cabin quilt. How fun!
I’ve always wanted to make a crazy quilt with embroidery. My grandma made applique animal baby quilts. So beautiful and fun.
I’ve tried a couple doll quilts myself, but sometime I’d love to make a crazy quilt … I have one that my husband’s grandmother made him when he was born, and it fascinates me!
Since I sew primarily by hand, I’ve only done a few doll-sized quilts. I like the simple designs withs strong contrasts like the basic nine-patch, or the tumbling blocks if you want tones instead
My Grandma made quilts all the time. I love the rag quilt and the multi colored triangle stitched into a square quilt she made me.
I love to make 4 patch blocks for our groups charity quilts. I’ve made doll quilts for the Christmas Toy Store with the leftover pieces.
I plan on retiring soon and on the top of my to-make list is to tackle a quilt. Starting with a doll size quilt would be a great way to begin!
I’m looking forward to getting my house straight then I can begin to sew again and a doll’s quilt sounds the ideal project.
Can’t wait to retire – more time to sew!
I have only made 2 quilts so far, and one was with my grandmother almost 40 years ago. (The other was a tee shirt quilt I found a tutorial online for, so I could get rid of some old ratty concert shirts from the 80s I wouldn’t otherwise let go of). But now that I’ve done this on my own from the planning of design to completion, ive doscovered why grandma was such anvavid quilter… its fun! Looking forward to tryingthis for my dills house beds now. Thanks!,
I’ve never made a quilt, doll clothes are my passion! But my aunt is an award winning quilter! I’ve always wanted to make a quilt that features squares with sewn on doll clothes and a little removable dolly that can be placed in them. Maybe a few squares with high chair, crib, stroller that the dolly can be placed in as well. Someday I’ll do it!
My favorite has been a double wedding ring made as a wedding gift.
I love making quilts. One of my favorites is the wedding ring quilt.
I love making doll quilts as they are much easier to quilt on my sewing machine. One of my favourite patterns is the disappearing 9 patch.
I love patchwork quilts. I have made numerous ones for friend’s babies.
I love simple traditional quilts. Irish double chain and Trip around the world are 2 of my favs
Small doll-sized quilts are so much more doable!
I love log cabin blocks! There are so many ways to arrange them.
Having trouble getting my posts right! I meant to say: I like everything, from Baltimore to Hawaiian to Trip Around the World
I’ve recently become intrigued by mosaic quilting, from Baltimore to Hawaiian to Trip Around the World. :)
I have made very simple quilts for dolls in the past. I have lost the use of my legs so cannot use my sewing machine. I am thinking of giving a try of making a doll quilt by hand. I have lots of dolls in lots of sizes so I can start small and work up. this would be a great prize to win.
I’ve been quilting for 20 years, and my favorite so far was a doll’s quilt. Good thing, because it took forever!!! I used machine appliqué and I swear it didn’t seem any faster than needle-turn (which I also love:)
I am a quilter. Recently I found making doll quilts very satisfying
I am a quilter. Recently I found Marin doll quilts very satisfying
The bamboo batting sounds interesting and of the Pixie Faire quilt styles I love the penguin one and the Love All Around one. Soooo cute!
My favorite quilts are the ones with lots of squares that make a design.
I am looking forward to making many different designs.
The tiny prints would be perfect and I am intrigued by the bamboo batting.
