We’ve put together the ultimate resource guide to the American Girl® Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twin® dolls. These 15-inch dolls are perfect for younger children in their baby doll phase, and fans of American Girl® may be curious to know how they compare in size and shape to other AG dolls. This post is an overview of the features of these dolls, as well as a comparison to other popular baby dolls.
Giveaway Alert! We’re giving away one Bitty Baby® Doll (#4).
Be sure to scroll to the end of this post and leave a comment telling us: Which Bitty Baby® or Bitty Twin® doll is your favorite?
Though no longer available from American Girl®, you can still find a lot of Bitty Twins® for sale on eBay! Here are the twins that were previously released:
The Bitty Baby® doll is meant to represent a newborn baby, while the twins are meant to represent toddlers. The bodies of the baby and twin dolls are nearly identical in design and size, as is detailed in the following chart.
Note: The Shoulder measurement is taken from shoulder point to shoulder point across the front of the body only. The Chest, Waist, and Hip measurements are taken all the way around the circumference of the body.
Other than the difference in hair style (painted on versus wig), the primary difference between the two types of dolls is in the shoulders. The Bitty Baby® has a shoulder seam in the cloth body, constructed similarly to a sleeve, while the Twin's shoulder is one continuous piece with the rest of the cloth body. Despite this difference in construction, both dolls have the same armscye.
The Bitty Baby® shown here was purchased in 2020, and older versions of the doll may have had shoulders without seams, as the twin dolls did.
There are almost countless options for baby dolls on the market. If you are shopping for a baby doll that you hope is similar in size to the Bitty Baby® or Twin, many 15-inch dolls are roughly the same size. For instance, the Melissa and Doug® 15-inch baby doll has very similar measurements to the American Girl® baby dolls, and patterns designed to fit the Bitty Baby®/Twins® fit this doll fairly well, as shown in the green and white outfits above.
While both the Bitty Baby® and the M&D dolls have a pleat in their cloth bodies at the hips to allow them to pose sitting, the above image shows that the effect is more dramatic in the Bitty Baby®, while the M&D baby is a bit more flat. Yet, looking back to the measurement chart, this difference didn't result in much of a difference in hip size.
Above is a size chart comparing an 18-inch American Girl® doll and a Bitty Baby®. While they are different in height, their upper body measurements are not too different, making some tops and dresses able to fit both dolls.
Get the Look: The above dress is made from the Sweet And Simple Dress Pattern by 123 Mulberry St, and is designed to fit 15-inch baby dolls.
What About Shoes?
The Bitty Baby/Twin® foot is similar in width to the 18-inch AG foot, but is a bit shorter. Closed toed shoes that are made for 18-inch dolls, like the white boots both dolls wear above, can be worn by the Babies. Open-toed shoes might look too long or not stay on the Baby foot securely.

My favorite is Bitty Baby 2. My granddaughter loves hers.
I have three sets of Bitty Baby boy/girl twins; one for each granddaughter. I’m sad that you can no long purchase items for them at the AG stores. Thanks for continuing their patterns so I can sew for them. The girls, 10, 8 & 6, transition between their 18" dolls and the Bitty Babies during their play time, so everyone needs outfits!
My 2 year old granddaughter is getting her very first baby doll this Christmas . I think baby #2 would be an excellent addition to her little “family”. I’m excited to make clothes that will match her Big sister’s 18" American Girl doll..

SEGUIN
I love the Bitty Twins with light skin, dark brown/black hair and almond eyes. My grand-daughters are Vietnamese and it’s hard to find Asian dolls that are not Chinese or Japanese. I would be thrilled to give a set of twins to my two grand-daughters. One is 3 and the other 18 months old, the perfect age for baby dolls. The love rocking and feeding their babies.
They are all so cute but I probably like the ginger haired one best.
I like the bitty baby with blue eyes and reddish hair. He looks like my granddaughter.
I think they are all very cute. I love making clothes for dolls. Would be great to have these to sew for.
I love these dolls and especially making clothes for them!
I like light skin, brown hair and brown eyes.
They are all cute but I think I prefer the ones with darker hair and eyes.
Love the brown-haired, brown-eyed Bitty Baby, because reminds me of my little ones, who are now all grown up… but there’s generation of great-nieces and -nephews coming up fast.
I like the blond blue eyed babies. But, they are all adorable!

LOVE the medium tone baby, with brown eyes. !!
My favorite Bitty Baby has dark hair and blue eyes.
I am a doll lover, and baby dolls were and still are my first love. Bitty Baby is especially lovable.
Love Bitty Baby! Gave one to a dear friends little girl 12 years ago and it is still her favorite and she has not hid it or gotten rid of the clothes I made for her. She has always been called Bitty. Love this! Thanks for the resource guide!
My granddaughter has been begging for a Bitty Baby. I am teaching her to sew and she’s picked out several patterns she’d like to have. So far we sew for the 18" girls and of course Barbie.
To be honest to you, I don’t really care for baby dolls.
The Bitty Babies were such a great start to the doll collection for girls to progress through their childhood. I really don’t have a favorite, I like the twins.
So cute. Light skin, dark hair is my fav
My granddaughter loves the twin bitty babies.
I love the twin dolls, but they were already discontinued when I started sewing for AG dolls. I love them all, but probably would select the blonde, blue eyed twins because they look like my grand kids. Actually, I would love twins with dark hair and blue eyes. I do have an AG baby doll, but except for the clothes from AG, she only has her birthday suit. I do have some patterns, but still am having way too much fun sewing for AG and WW.
My twin granddaughters love their twin bitty babies.
The Bitty Baby is great as the doll can be whichever gender the child wants. My daughter chose for hers to be a ‘little brother’ to the 18 inch dolls. (The twins weren’t around back then)
Although they are all adorable, I really liked the light skin, blonde, blue eyed bitty twins. I wish AG would bring back the twins again. I love making clothes for 18" Dolls and have expanded my passion to the bitty babies. Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in the contest.
I love the blonde, blue eyed, fair skinned Bitty twins. Sewing cute outfits for them would be
so much fun.
My granddaughter would love a baby bitty doll.
Light Skin, Brown Hair, Brown Eyed Twins are the cutest thing ever!
I love the fair skin brown haired bitty baby. That is my grandaughter’s coloring.
I’m making a wardrobe for an American Girl doll for a raffle, but if I win a Bitty Baby I will make 2 raffles~ I love them all. Never had one…will need patterns….and shoes…
My favourite are the Bitty Twins, although they are all adorable.
The Bitty Baby twins are adorable and so fun to sew for make them look so cute in their matching outfits. But adding a single Bitty Baby would be like having another sibling to go with the twins and also make more outfits for. I love them all.
I think they are all adorable and I can"t decide which are the sweetest
My great granddaughter and I would love to win one of these dolls. She loves playing with her dolls.
Like them all. My daughter has one of them.and has them on her shelf.

I think these little babies should be given to boys & girls, as young as a year old. They should have various races. I love these adorable twins.

How do you choose, they are all beautiful dolls!
Many years of play value, too bad they are no longer made.
I like the darker skin tone with dark hair. I buy the dolls make clothes for them and give them as gifts to kids on the reservation where I live. It’s fun to see the the kids playing with them.
Purfect for my youngest granddaughter!
I love that the Bitty Twins match the AG dolls. I had not realized that!
Adorable, just the right size for a little girl. The patterns seem perfect to baby dolls.
I think they are all cute. I do like the light skin brown hair brown eyes dolls.
knitted items interest me right now. ….quiet evening and dolly work
Love the addition of knitted clothing for dolls
The Bitty Twins were my favorite AG dolls – perfect for girls to play with for years, and truly unique. They were great fun to sew for! So many ways to mix and match patterns and fabrics. The hair gave them more personality than the Bitty Babies, and held headbands and hats better. Too, my granddaughter has gotten years of play out of her Bitty Twins….

They’re all so adorable. The dark skin, curly-haired girl and boy are especially cute!

I purchased a Bitty baby ( light skin, brown hair and hazel eyes for my granddaughter 5 years ago as her first doll. She named her Daisy and she still loves her today.

Love all Bitty Babies but am especially fond of the African American baby with molded curls. So cute!
I love the bitty twins with red hair! Would look just like my grandkids!
Sweet dolls. Something that looks like my grandchildren. Light skin, blonde or brown hair and blue yes.
We have a new granddaughter so there’s no time like the present to prepare for her first doll!! A medium skin doll would be perfect!
The Bitty Babies are so lovable. If I won, I’d choose a fair skinned baby with light or no hair.
I love the bitty babies and the bitty twins. I love the fair skin blonde hair the most, but they are all adorable.
they are all sweet!
The bitty babies are all very cute. I think I would pick the fair skin and hair like my girls.
Really cute doll!. I like the Bitty Baby with the painted on hair the best. My granddaughter is 15 months old so the baby doll would be perfect for her.
How adorable they are. I would be thrilled with either of them
My granddaughter will be 10 this month, she would love a Bitty Baby!
I love the Bitty Baby #5. They are all cute and would be loved by any little girl or boy.
I love The Two African American bitty twin with black hair and brown eyes
The pale skinned ones with red hair are like my grandchildren so I like them best.
I would love one of the dark skinned Bitty Babies. My granddaughter has a light skinned baby, but needs to learn to love all babies , of every skin tone.
I have had the pleasure of adjusting 18" patterns to fit a blonde hair bitty baby boy. His owner was the most excited about the baseball outfit and cap.

I love the dark haired Caucasian twins. They remind me of my babies. My granddaughter would love a Bitty Baby, as would I. I raised 3 boys so having a toddler granddaughter who LOVES my extensive doll collection is a JOY. To be truthful, we would get in a fight over who gets the free doll, but she would win. I am a grandma, after all LOL.
I love the dark skin brown hair and eyes Bitty Twins and the medium skin dark hair and eyes twin set. All of the Bitty Baby’s are adorable in my book!
I like the twins with the blond hair as they remind me of when my children were babies.
The Bitty Babies are very sweet but my kids always liked the dolls with hair, so The Bitty Twins with long dark hair would get their vote.
My grand daughter, Liara, would love a bitty baby, especially the one with black eyes like she has! But they are all adorable, too. Ta, Deb.
I like the Bitty Baby with the dark hair and eyes because they look like my granddaughters.
Definitely a red haired Bitty Baby to match my Granddaughter
I love them all – I have grandchildren of different colors – so impossible to choose.
I like the light skin Bitty Baby with red hair. I think she is adorable.
The Bitty Twins are so cute. We missed them but jumped on the Welly Wisher bandwagon. My girls love their AG dolls.
I like them all. There is a little girl in my life that would love the twins with dark skin and curly hair just like her.
The African American Bitty Twins are my favourites but I love the doll that is to be given away as well.
