We’ve put together the ultimate resource guide to the American Girl® Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twin® dolls. These 15-inch dolls are perfect for younger children in their baby doll phase, and fans of American Girl® may be curious to know how they compare in size and shape to other AG dolls. This post is an overview of the features of these dolls, as well as a comparison to other popular baby dolls.
Giveaway Alert! We’re giving away one Bitty Baby® Doll (#4).
Be sure to scroll to the end of this post and leave a comment telling us: Which Bitty Baby® or Bitty Twin® doll is your favorite?
Though no longer available from American Girl®, you can still find a lot of Bitty Twins® for sale on eBay! Here are the twins that were previously released:
The Bitty Baby® doll is meant to represent a newborn baby, while the twins are meant to represent toddlers. The bodies of the baby and twin dolls are nearly identical in design and size, as is detailed in the following chart.
Note: The Shoulder measurement is taken from shoulder point to shoulder point across the front of the body only. The Chest, Waist, and Hip measurements are taken all the way around the circumference of the body.
Other than the difference in hair style (painted on versus wig), the primary difference between the two types of dolls is in the shoulders. The Bitty Baby® has a shoulder seam in the cloth body, constructed similarly to a sleeve, while the Twin's shoulder is one continuous piece with the rest of the cloth body. Despite this difference in construction, both dolls have the same armscye.
The Bitty Baby® shown here was purchased in 2020, and older versions of the doll may have had shoulders without seams, as the twin dolls did.
There are almost countless options for baby dolls on the market. If you are shopping for a baby doll that you hope is similar in size to the Bitty Baby® or Twin, many 15-inch dolls are roughly the same size. For instance, the Melissa and Doug® 15-inch baby doll has very similar measurements to the American Girl® baby dolls, and patterns designed to fit the Bitty Baby®/Twins® fit this doll fairly well, as shown in the green and white outfits above.
While both the Bitty Baby® and the M&D dolls have a pleat in their cloth bodies at the hips to allow them to pose sitting, the above image shows that the effect is more dramatic in the Bitty Baby®, while the M&D baby is a bit more flat. Yet, looking back to the measurement chart, this difference didn't result in much of a difference in hip size.
Above is a size chart comparing an 18-inch American Girl® doll and a Bitty Baby®. While they are different in height, their upper body measurements are not too different, making some tops and dresses able to fit both dolls.
Get the Look: The above dress is made from the Sweet And Simple Dress Pattern by 123 Mulberry St, and is designed to fit 15-inch baby dolls.
What About Shoes?
The Bitty Baby/Twin® foot is similar in width to the 18-inch AG foot, but is a bit shorter. Closed toed shoes that are made for 18-inch dolls, like the white boots both dolls wear above, can be worn by the Babies. Open-toed shoes might look too long or not stay on the Baby foot securely.

My favorite is the bitty baby with dark hair and brown eyes.
My favorite is the Bitty Baby is the one with light skin, dark hair and dark eyes.
My favorite is Bitty Baby #6 . . . I’m a sucker for red hair. Thanks for another great giveaway
These are adorable dolls.
I like all of the babies and the brunette twins.
these are such special dolls. I bought one years ago for my grand daughter Julisa and she loves that doll. She is 18 now and still has her baby dolls. :) I like the brown hair , brown eye dollie. Thank you for all you do.
I love all the Bitty Babies! They have the sweetest faces and are so soft and cuddly. I have one that I try clothes I make on and bought a set of both the brown haired and blond haired twins for my sister who works with little kids at church. It’s been a lot of fun making clothes for them! Thank you for the wonderful giveaway and all the information about some of my favorite dolls.
I have the blond Bitty Baby Twins and they are still my favorite.
#1, grandkids are blond. Love AG dolls.
I love the Bitty Babies! I purchased the Asian (my daughter-in-law is Cambodian) looking one years ago, hoping to one day have a granddaughter to give it to, that might closely resemble her. I finally got my “Kali” 2-1/2 years ago and I’m busy sewing away for that Bitty Baby, as I plan to give it to her for Christmas this year!!!
I have also always been partial to the dark haired Bitty Twins and would love to have them one day!
Thank you to American Girl for making such wonderful, cuddly baby dolls and to Cinnamon for this opportunity.
Forever a fan of Pixie Faire!!!
Love. Love Bitty Babies! Thank you for the measurements!
My youngest granddaughter just turned 1 and these would be perfect for her
I like Bitty Baby #4. Dark eyes, dark hair and medium skin.
I love all babies. I keep telling my husband howuch fun i could have with making outfits for babies
I think they are all super cute. I especially love the Bitty Twins with the hair.
I love them all. I’ve made a few outfits for a friend’s granddaughter’s doll – wished I’d had one of my own to see how they looked.
Love all the Bitty Babies and the Twins. I have given five of my granddaughters Bitty Babies
and the two older ones have the Bitty Boy Twins. I was disappointed to hear the Twins were discontinued.
My favorite is Bitty Baby #2.
I like the medium dark doll with black hair and brown eyes.
My kids are half Asian so they would love the light skinned/almond eyes twins ❤️
I love the blond twins
As a lover of ALL things doll, I can’t choose a favorite! Bitty baby was the first little sweetie and the twins are so adorable! When AG still sold them, I got the twins to match my grandchildren’s features. I was disappointed when they discontinued them.
Oh, I love them all, but especially the girl twins!
I love the twins
My favorite would be the brown hair, brown eyes and light skin tone.
I love them all!!! My babydoll was always my favourite as a child.
I love the twins. I have given several granddaughters Bitty Baby Twins—brown haired, blond haired, dark brown curly haired. They are all so cute and very well loved!
My favorite bitty baby is the red head as I have a great granddaughter who’s a red head.
I have the blond Bitty Baby twins and have given the Bitty Baby doll to each of my four granddaughters based on their own hair and eye color.
I like the last pictured Bitty Baby with reddish hair. I have the head of my mother’s baby doll from the late 1930’s. It’s a composition head, and badly cracked. But it was my mom’s, so I’ve saved it.
I love the itty bitty doll with brown hair, brown eyes.
Brown hair and blue eyes!!
Love the curly haired twins!
I have always been a fan of baby dolls. I have a set of blonde Bitty Baby twins as well as a Pleasant company Bitty Baby in her original outfit.
I got my granddaughter brunette twins for her birthday. I think there should be more patterns available for these sweet babies.
Love the curly haired twins!
The dark skin, dark haired twins are so cute.
What is not to like about baby dolls? I loved them as a child, think Gerber baby. Our daughter was a baby dill girl all the way! I own the blonde Bitty Twins and love to design for the Bitty crowd. Made a cute dress and diaper set yesterday using a modified 18 inch pattern I had made years ago.
Love the twins. Was sad that they discontinued them.
Always been a sucker for a classic baby doll, so I’d say the little redheaded Bitty Baby.
I’ve always liked the brunette Bitty Baby@
I like the dark skinned twins the best.
I do not know how you could “pick” a favorite. But baby dolls are just my favorite doll no matter what. Even as a young girl, I always went for a baby doll, none of these dressy dolls. Guess that is why I do so much charity sewing for babies. I am so happy to see patterns for baby dolls as I think it is very important to instill nurturing by girls toward babies. I have a big box of dolls that were tossed and nothing is wrong with them at all. But finding patterns is always a problem. They will eventually all find permanent homes as did all my rescue dogs and puppies. I enclose a note with the dolls: will you give me a second home and love me? And they make excellent “grandma” dolls to have when the grandchildren visit. I make a little tee shirt and embroider a name on it, so it isn’t just a doll, it has a name! Going to print out that article so I can just sit and read it without having to look at a computer. Thanks much.
I like the twins. I have autistic identical twin boys in my family. Jude like the long blonde hair because he has long (Dark) hair and his sister has long blonde hair. Luke likes the boys because he and his twin have to big brothers. I agree with Jude’s 8 year old wisdom, “skin does make you a person, your mind and your blood does.”
The Bitty Babies remind me of a baby doll I had as a child. It was a bit bigger but had a body similar to Bitty Babies. That doll had painted hair but was a plastic. Played with so much head cracked open where front and back of head were joining. My mother must have glued it back together every other week. I think a baby doll is great for smaller children. Just before I had my daughter, got a baby doll for my son so we could teach him how to be gentle with his new baby sister. They both played with that doll after she got old enough to play with dolls. I would like a Bitty Baby as my daughter passed almost two years ago and she loved dolls and had a collection of different dolls. Porcelain, China, Barbies and American Girl size dolls.
My favorite is the African American twin girl!
My favourite Bitty Babies are the ones that I found on Ebay that match my two grandchildren. My grandson has dark skin with brown eyes and curly hair. His sister has fair skin with blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair. I am making wardrobes for both dolls and plan to make some matching outfits for the kids as well.
Thank you for this info. A;; this time and I I did not know there was a difference between the baby and the twins—mine have all been second-hand purchases which I have dressed and passed on.
I love dolls in general. I like the one with blonde ponytails. I have great granddaughter that i would love to give it to.
I really like the bitty twins with dark skin, curly brown hair and brown eyes. So sad they’re not made any more.
I have made some bitty baby clothes for both our granddaughters. I like the blonde blue eyed Babies and twins, because they are like my granddaughters except twins are missing the mop of curled. I would love a set of black twins because I think they are so Very cute
My DIL is mixed dace, so I would choose the dRk skinned twins shown at the very beginning.
The twins win my vote.
The blond bitty baby twins. So cute with the pig tails.
I love the light skin, blonde, blue eyed twins who remind me of my grandchildren. They are 1 year apart, boy and girl, and are adorable. What a great article. I never knew all the differences between the many types of Bitty Babies and Twins. Thanks.
The older one with the molded hair is my favorite
I like the boy twin. My granddaughters have a new baby sister but one wanted a brother. This would be a perfect gift for her.
I love the light skinned brunette Bitty Babies the most, they remind me of my two daughters when they were newborns! 💛
my favorite was the brunette bitty baby with blue eyes unfortunately it is no longer made
All of the Bitty Babies are adorable! I would love to win any one of them!
All of them are so cute! Very hard to chose.
Our one grandson and granddaughter each got a biitty baby which they enjoyed immensely when they were young. .Our granddaughters both got The American girl dolls when they were a little bigger and loved them too.r.
I love the bitty baby with the blonde pony tails and her twin brother.
I love the Bitty baby! Going to be getting one for my two year old granddaughter soon as I think she would really enjoy one also! I like that they are so durable for little ones play. My favourites are the dark haired ones!
So happy to finally have Bitty Baby recognized again! My granddaughter is 5 1/2 now and received her Baby for her fourth birthday. She is a part of our family. I do use AG patterns to make some of her clothes, but there is a distinct shortage of patterns for this beloved doll. We would love to welcome a sister for our Baby Kathleen, named for the dear friend who sent her as a much-loved gift.
My Bitty Baby is one of the earlier ones with molded light brown hair. Dolly, as my grandkids call her, is a favorite companion when they come for a visit. She’s climbed trees, flown high in the swing, taken wild rides in an old Barbie jeep, and snuggled under a quilt with a sleepy little one.
I have given each of my great-granddaughters a Bitty Baby for their 3rd birthday, and of course had to make clothes for them too!
Love all the Bitty Babies!
When my grandson wanted a doll, we got Bitty babies. My daughter bought one and I bought 2 so he had triplets for Christmas. I bought a double stroller and made clothes for the dolls as well as bedding. He still plays with those dolls but Barbie and Ken now is his doll of choice. He wanted a Barbie doll house for Christmas last year and got it and 10 Barbies and Kens. I like the Bitty Babies because they are easier to clothe than some of the other baby dolls.
The bitty girl baby is just what my little granddaughter has been asking for because they look so much alike. They are so real looking!!
Thanks to you and congrats on the wonderful article in the magazine.
I have one and would love to have a second
The brown haired bitty boy looks just like my oldest grandcub did as a baby.
The brown haired bitty boy looks just like my oldest grandcub did as a baby.
I like the bitch twins. I like dark brown hair, light sin and dark brown eyes.
I love The African American birthstone and African bitty baby too
I adore the red haired bitty baby, my first child had red hair🙂
I love em all, but the light skin, blonde, blue eyed twins reminds me of my grand-twins
For me Bitty Baby doll #6 is my favourite because its ginger like me!
I love making dill clothes. I have made historical clothes for my mom’s doll and now can make some for my bitty baby. Yay!
The twins are so cute
Baby dolls have always been my preferred doll for 60 years. Nice to see Clothes patterns for them.
I really like the Bitty Twins. Especially the blond ones. Bitty Baby is cute but not my favorite.
I like the bitty baby with light brown hair mist because the face is cute and there is no hair to untangle.
Thought I had it done, I guess not. As I am a grandma who sews doll clothes, and one granddaughter has the bitty baby twins, I’ll say the female bitty baby twin with the light skin brown hair and brown eyes. Now she will have at least one.
My granddaughter Daphne is just wild about dolls. She would be overjoyed to receive a Bitty Baby of any kind. Good quality dolls that can handle all the love that is given to them.
My favourite are the light skin, brown hair, brown eyes twin! They are all adorable!
I like the twins the best. And if they happen to have light skin and brown hair, that would really please me.
I would love to have a Bitty Baby with dark hair and eyes and Asian features. My precious DIL was born in the Philippines.
I love em all, but the light skin, blonde, blue eyes reminds me of my own baby, one upon a time.
I would love to have a Bitty Baby with dark hair and eyes and Asian features. My precious DIL was born in the Philippines.
As a grandma who sews doll clothes, 1 of my granddaughters has the bitty baby twins, so I will say the female bitty baby twin with the light skin, brown hair and brown eyes. This way she will at least have one of the bitty baby’s.
I love the brown skin/brown eyes
I love the Bitty Twins! All of them, but especially the ones with dark hair and almond eyes. The little girl looks like my daughter as a toddler.
I love the Bitty Twins and ordered myself a set, wanted the hair rather than the molded hair. I like them because they are younger than the 18" doll. Mine have brown hair.
Any of the Bitty Babies dolls are cute. The blonde one reminds me of my granddaughter.
She loves to plays with dolls and always pretends that she has twins.
Difficult to chose.. love the blonde or light brown blue eyed bitty baby or the light brown hair, blue green hazel light brow eyes, light skin girl twin. Also like the medium dark skin curly haired boy. They are all so cute!
I like them all, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be light skin dark hair—just because that’s what all my human babies looked like. :D
I love the Bitty Twins with light skin, brown hair, brown eyes……although I’d change there eyes to hazel.
The Bitty Baby with dark brown painted on hair reminds me of my childhood doll
I love them all.
