Get To Know Heidi (In Her Own Words)

"Hello, fellow doll clothes makers! I’m Heidi Mittiga (Flossie Potter Patterns). Back in the 1990s, my daughter would pore over the doll catalogs and wish for all the outfits that were displayed in the photos. Money was tight, so I started copying them for her. I even sold a few. I came up with an idea to make doll clothes patterns that represented women of history, but it would be a long time before anyone would be able to turn an idea into a computerized pattern and sell it to seamstresses around the world.

My daughter grew up and moved on, but my idea never left. I did alterations for over a decade, and then came another daughter who also loved dolls. This time, the internet was ready. My first PDF pattern was Susan B. Anthony, and now I have over 80 patterns listed on Pixie Faire!"

Inquiring Minds Want To Know:

Q: What is your favorite sewing tip?
Whenever I sew sleeves into the armscyes, I sew with the bodice on top of the sleeve. It took me a long time to come up with this way to minimize unwanted tucks in the bodice fabric that I wouldn’t notice until the sleeve was in!

Q: Is there a new hobby, craft, or skill you’d like to learn?
Yes. I have always wanted to learn tatting. My grandma could tat, and it looked like so much fun. I’m trying!

Q: If you were to relax by the water, would you prefer the ocean waves, a babbling brook, or a rushing waterfall?
Hands down, I’d prefer the babbling brook. That would mean that I’m in the woods, and I love the woods. (I’ve been to the ocean in California and to Niagara Falls near home in New York, but they’re both so loud that I can’t even hear myself think. So, give me the babble of a brook!)

Q: What’s your favorite flower or plant?
I love Hollyhocks next to a fence. They’re an old-fashioned flower.

Q: What would you say is the most daring or exciting thing you’ve ever done?
I took SCUBA diving lessons and dove on a wreck.

I have at least 30 of these lovely patterns. Decide which one I like best…impossible!
My favorite patterns are historic patterns and I truly appreciate that my History of Fashion Professor would NOT do a double back flip in her grave due to lack of historical accuracy.
Thank you for your work.

I love Flossie Potter patterns because I love the historical aspects to them. I can’t really pinpoint a favorite one, per se, but own a lot of them!

I love so many it’s hard to pick one pattern. I lam drawn to the historical patterns and the ones from the 50s, 60s, and 70s (I just might be showing my age.) Two that popped out immediately were Flower Child Maxi Dress and 1800 Simple Stitches Dress. Lots of fun sewing possibilities from this talented designer!

My favorite patterns are the Hip-Hugger Bell Bottoms, the Woodstock Peasant Top, and the Fringe Vest, they remind me of outfits I had as a child in the 60’s.

I have several of your patterns. The one I like the most is the Susan B. Anthony Outfit. I had no idea it was your first! Your directions are so easy to follow, and so well illustrated that I would not be afraid of any of your patterns, but I like the historical ones best.

I have so many of these patterns! They’re really easy to follow and I think my favorite so far is the 18th & 19th Century Homespun Handicrafts 18" Doll Accessory Pattern because I love to embroider and it got me interested in spinning — which I still haven’t mastered, but I do enjoy trying. The pattern that I really want to make is Susan B. Anthony, but I am a little intimidated. I also love the the little Raggedy Ann costume for dolls.

My home is shared with a Ugandan family. They have 3 girls that play with dolls every day. I hope to teach them how to sew this summer and help them make their own fashion statements with these style skirts, blouses and bell bottoms! Whoo hoo.

The idea of making clothing from my childhood makes me so happy. The blouse and jean skirt remind me of making skirts when I was a young teen just learning to sew! We had little money since we had returned from the mission field and I had a blast making things for myself. I will look forward to making this style Jean skirt for the dolls at my house!

I have several of the Flossie Potter patterns. I want to make the Founding Father’s and Betsy Ross sets with accessories, if not for this July 4th, then next year. And since I like to knit, the Starry, Starry Night cardigan is on my list of projects. But my favorite is the Old-Fashioned nightgown because I lived in a cold house growing up and our current house can be cold in winter. The dolls need nice warm flannel nighties just like mine.

I didn’t realize how many Flossie Potter patterns I have until I started trying to choose my favorite! I made Betsy Ross a few years ago – loved it! Just completed one of the Sisters – love it! Susan B. Anthony was my first FPP made – loved it! I also love all of the 1960s and 1970s patterns because they remind me of my growing up days. Can’t wait to get the Jellies on Friday. It’s been on my “to buy” list for quite some time. Thanks for all of your patterns!
