"Hi, I’m Genine, the person behind Genniewren Designs. I've been sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, and hand-smocking virtually all my life. My first embroidery project was a tray cloth for my new headmistress when I started school!
I was seven when I embarked on my first real human-sized sewing project all on my own without mum’s help. It involved my little sister lying on the floor on top of some fabric.
I drew around her with chalk, cut out the shape and sewed it together by hand to make a blouse. She wore it to Sunday school and proudly told one of the teachers that I had made it for her.
The teacher said that every designer needed a sewing machine and offered to give me her old machine as she had recently bought a new one. I came home with the shiniest black and gold crank-handle sewing machine you’ve ever seen. I used that machine for years until I received an electric sewing machine for a birthday gift when I was a teenager.
Since those early days, I’ve sewn all sorts of things, sometimes for money, always for fun. I don’t do much human sewing nowadays. Instead, I design sewing, knitting and craft patterns for dolls clothes, pets, and accessories. Since 2005 I’ve been digitizing machine embroidery designs too. My doll and stuffed animal patterns are all available exclusively through Pixie Faire. Joining Pixie Faire has been a great way for me to share my love of sewing for dolls with so many friends all around the world, and I am so happy to be part of that team!
What’s more, August 2024 is my 10th Birthday as a Pixie Faire design partner, and I’m thrilled to be able to celebrate with you all. It’s been such a fun time."
Inquiring Minds Want To Know:
Q: What's your favorite food?
I don’t really have a single favorite food. I love flavorful food of all genres from Mexican to Indian regional cooking. I love to research recipes in books and online and then experiment.
Q: Coffee or Tea?
It depends. Black coffee for breakfast. Herbal mint tea during the day. Despite being a Brit, I don’t actually like tea – and I have been called unpatriotic by some Brits for saying that!
Q: What inspired your brand name?
Gennie Wren was my dad’s nickname for me when I was a child. As I sewed so much for dolls back then, I thought it was a good name to use for my business. When I made the teddy bears I used a different brand name, based on what my nephew called me when he was a baby.
Q: What's your favorite place to shop?
I love shopping at outdoor markets. Our local market has stalls selling the freshest foods from all over the world, fabrics & notions at bargain prices, and all sorts of other stuff. When we visit other towns and cities in the UK we always try and go on market day if we can. A market can tell you so much about a place. I also love browsing in second-hand book shops. My husband and I once “lost” over half a day in a single book shop in Hay on Wye!
Q: What is your dream vacation?
I don’t really do vacations very often as I’m a bit of a homebody. When we do go away I prefer cities or towns with lots of historical features to explore. I’d like to visit the US one day and go to an American Girl store.
Q: Do You Collect Anything Special?
I collect vintage needlework books, pattern drafting books and magazines. Some of my original books, sewing magazines and patterns date back to the 1870s. I keep telling myself I must scan some of them for posterity as the paper can be very fragile. Maybe one day when I have time!
We'd love to hear from you. Leave a comment and tell us which Genniewren Designs & Genniewren Designs Machine Embroidery you love most!
Thanks, everyone!
The Pixie Faire Team
Genine’s designs are absolutely adorable! I’ve oohed ans ahhed over the royal wedding reproduction dresses and the details like the smocking on some of the nightgowns. I’m in love with the historical patterns like the wwi nurse and the boiler suit, they’re my favorites!
I wish I was as talented & creative like Genuine. Such beautiful dolls, outfits. Bless you All
It is an honor to use your patterns because the LOVE that you have for what you do is absolutely obvious with the shapes, cut, and instructions of each piece. Really really lovely! I also appreciate the Boys’ patterns/uniforms!! They fit and look like they belong in a museum. I made the girls’ WWI nursing uniforms a long time ago and they were a lot of fun to make and look great as well. So, THANKS!!
Genine, I just love your WWI Nurse Uniforms, The Royal Bride & Groom, and most of all the Highland collection. Congratulations on your 10-year anniversary. Here’s to 10 more!
I like them all. If I have to pick one I will say the mixer.
Hello, and ohhhh I love the Ethnic clothes that are being created – just beautiful!!! The ideas are just flooding my mind . . . now if I could only get the body to cooperate with the mind so that I could get some creations made!!! ggg Such beautiful choices and so happy that such talented people are sharing their gifts. Pixie Faire is my happy place!!!
Gennie I have many of your older patterns from your website & want to thank you for making them available to those wanting to sew. However, I can’t choose which is my favorite because I love them all! You renewed my interest in sewing again. Thank you so much and thank you for the Serena skirt pattern.
I love the braided sandals pattern. I love little shoes. Not buying them for myself. I can only wear 2 pairs of mine since breaking my ankle and have a plate and screws put in there. :( I loved getting to know you and in some ways we are very similar. I to would love to visit an American Girl doll store. I only live 3 hours away from one.
I love all the patterns for pets, particularly the Socks and Smokey patterns. Every doll needs a pet! Thanks for the giveaway❤
The wee Scottish vest and kilt are so so darling!
Love the details added to patterns
I like the creativity in your designs and look forward to making them.
I’m very new to making doll clothes.s I love that your instructions seem very easy to follow and can’t wait to get started – way outside my comfort zone, but up for it.

I have several of your patterns. Some I haven’t made yet. I love the imaginative details and detailed instructions.
I used Genniwren’s “Ship Ahoy” pattern to make a Sailor suit to gift with my AGD to my DIL. She is married to My Little Sailor, and I’m sure she will love the doll clothes. Although this is rather a complicated pattern, I found the directions well detailed and easy to follow. It’s definitely my favorite!
Great patterns! I used the Royal Wedding pattern to create a beautiful Diana like gown. Thanks, Genine!
I love the Halloween embroidery designs. My daughters favorite holiday. So much creativity!
I don’t sew with knit much but the knit outfits look easy enough. I’ll have to give them a try.
So many lovely patterns! I do all my doll sewing by hand. Somehow most sewing machines dislike me. I am curious: can machine embroidery patterns be embroidered by hand?
You are so very talented. Very cute designs. Love the Highland Outfits.
Thank you for the free pattern.
The patterns are so adorable. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I do really like the boiler suit. It reminds me of a jumpsuit from my childhood. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Gennie’s patterns and embroidery files have been some of my favourites for a number of years. I really enjoy using the Edith WWI Nurse costume and all of the wonderful Club Patches files.
I’m a cookbook browser and collector too. Love your patterns, especially the Scottish Kilts!
I love your Scottish Kilt designs! My husband and I frequent Dunedin, FL (sister-city to Edinburgh). I have purchased your patterns for the Kilt, Jacket, Blouses, and Gillies in preparation for my three 18-inch dolls (Giggles, instead of American Girl, but they wear the same size) to be kitted out for the next Dunedin Highland Games & Festival. Last year I bought a scarf that I intend to use to make their kilts in my preferred clan tartan. I thought if I had any skill at all at it, I might try to sew a few to sell the next year (with your permission, of course!). If I get to that point I will definitely reach out to you, show you the results and request your permission to use your patterns. However, I am a horrible procrastinator …
Wasn’t familiar with Genniewren patterns, but love these Highland designs. Think my dolls need these outfits. Thanks :)
Love your patterns! I was surprised how many I had (and have made) from my doll pattern collection. Thank you.
I love all of her patterns. The highland Bundle is awesome. .
My favorites are the Highland patterns. Love all the detailed pieces.
I love the 1930s Betsy dress pattern, it’s perfect for Kit and Ruthie!
I love all the patterns I can’t pick just one as my favorite bur they are all different from the main doll clothes patterns out their.
Oh, Genine! PLEASE make time to scan those historical patterns to preserve them! (Thank you for the historical costumes you’ve already done.) My favorite pattern is your Sorrell Dress—so adaptable! I have used the top and waistband to make tunic-style blouses with the different variations and have used the waistband and skirt just to make skirts and have made the dress with lengthened skirt to make “formal” gowns. Thank you for sharing your talents with us “plangonophiles” ;-)
I have the Highland bundle and one day I want to make the whole thing. I love the McKenzie dress in the AGAT size. It looks lovely on those dolls.
I love the Scottish Highland patterns. I plan to buy some of them soon to make outfits for the dolls I include in my display at local Scottish/Celtic festivals.
My favorite is the Highland Bundle since I my grandparents came from Scotland. Such visually accurate and detailed.
There are so many great patterns! I really love the intricacy of them. The Serena skirt is a really pretty design.
I am sorry, but I do not think I have seen a cuter pattern than the Highland bundles, both for girl and boy! They just make me smile.
I absolutely love the military patterns from Genniwren. My hardest issues is finding time to see where the all the other things going on. I have SO MANY projects I want to complete.
Best Scottish outfits I have ever seen
You have such a marvellous collection of patterns to choose from. I love the details of your Highland collection.
LOVE the Scottish bundle! Also the variety of cats, bunnies, puppies available. Sooner or later we will have to have the boater hat for my many Sasha dolls, both boys and girls .Right now I think we need the Alana for our RRFF girl. She needs a bucket hat or so.
It was fascinating to read your bio, Genine! I love that you create such a variety of patterns, from crochet to embroidery, modern to historic! I just noticed the nativity patterns and now I want to sew up a school pageant set for my dolls! Keep creating, and happy anniversary!!
I used Genniewren’s School Nativity patterns two years ago for a Christmas tableau. They made it so easy to visualize and create what I wanted. It sold within 10 minutes of being posted, and Instill have customers who ask if I’m going to make another one! Thanks, Gennie!
Love the kynance cove dress, but also the lambs are adorbs.
I like the Edith Nurse uniform as a fun historical look that is unique.
I love the selection! The patterns go together really well and look as good as you’d hoped. My grandson is aiming at being a history teacher and I am making him the historical patterns so he can set the mood for each era. All on dressmaker stands. These patterns help with the project.
I love the Highland patterns, probably because I have Scottish relatives!
Love the Scottish kilt and the wedding dress
All Genine’s patterns are adorable! My favorite is probably the Betsy dress, and I would dearly love to make the Highland outfit as well as the Bella Blouse!
I have just come back from a trip to Edinburgh and I really want to make Genniewren’s complete Girl’s Highland Bundle for my red-haired Truly Me #61 and Genniewren’s complete Boy’s Highland Bundle for my Logan. I think they’d be so cute together!
I like the machine embroidery files, I have some of them! I also like the look of the sewing and crochet patterns.
Genine is one of the sweetest people, and she also makes fabulous patterns. I hope you can visit the American Girl store one day Genine! If you do, I’d love you meet you. In some ways you feel like my sewing grandma – I’ve learned so much from you! Congrats on 10 years!
The Mackenzie pattern is one of my favorites. I have made it multiple times. It’s so easy to embellish with ribbons and trims.
I love all the Highland Scottish ones and the Welsh outfit. I’m so happy there are cultural outfits for my heritage available.
I love the Rosie Romper pattern and the Benjy & Blossom bunny patterns! I don’t machine embroider, so don’t know about those.
I love Genine’s knitting patterns and have previously been a pattern tester for her. The patterns are so detailed and well written, and the fit is perfect.
I love her designs.
I like all the patterns you can make.
I love the bridal dress.
Love the variety and all the knitting patterns. One of my favorites is Peggy Sue Accordion Pleated Skirt 18" Doll Clothes Pattern
I love all of GennieWren costume patterns. They are very realistic. Thank you Cinnamon for the awesome giveaways.❤️💋😘
I especially like the Royal Wedding 1981 dress.
I loved reading your sewing and craft making journey. I especially like the red twirl skirt you have as a pattern. I would enjoy you so much as a friend! I am starting to make doll clothes again since there are 3 girls sharing my home from a Ugandan family. I also have neighbor girls who love dolls. I like to make things in colors and with designs personalized to the girls. Your new pattern for Kilts is lovely and I hope to make some soon!
Doll clothes patterns are so cute!
I love the scrolling embroidery patterns. Doll clothes are just cuter with that extra touch. And the wee animals! The patterns for the bunnies and lambs are so easy!
I like the Girl’s Highland Bundle
I love the Rosie Romper as it’s very versatile
There are so many amazing patterns to choose from.
The first pattern I got from GenniWren’s collection was the Edith Nurse uniform. I had been looking for one for ages and when I saw this one I just had to get it :)
I also have both sets of the Mini Space Patches… even though I don’t have a proper sewing machine to use them on lol!
I hope to get a few more of her collection (I’m eyeing the highland patterns as well as the Royal Wedding).
As a fellow designer I enjoyed reading your story. Nothing is more rewarding for a seamstress/designer than sharing knowledge and talents. Good job!
I love them all – tough decision! But if I have to choose one, the Girl’s Highland Bundle. Just adorable.
I’m sorry to say I have never used any of her patterns but looking through them, that will change. She has so many cute patterns for various dolls that it will be difficult to choose which one(s) to start with. Glad to have found her.
I too have several of Genine’s patterns and machine embroidery designs. I just love them all. Several years ago I had the opportunity to correspond with Genine when I had some questions about one of her patterns. She’s informative, caring, friendly and a genuinely very nice person.
I have many of these patterns. Love the ease of sewing them and have won many state fair ribbons using her patterns.
Best patterns if you have a school project and need it to be accurate – always an A – thank you – makes life much easier – plus gives the younger sister of the maker something to play with when the project is done. Just all Fabulous
I love Genniewren Designs patterns. I have many of her patterns. I like her Scottish outfit patterns; they are very much detailed. Gennie Allen & I have commented back & forth a few times. She is one of Pixie Faire’s best designers.
I got to “know” Genine when I was a pattern tester for Pixie Faire. Life has since gotten in the way, but my love for her and her patterns is still in my heart. She is such a special person and all of her patterns are special. I guess that one of my favorites is the wedding gown that she produced, along with the wedding party.
Love patterns from the “old country”
I love her patterns! Every one of them is so authentic. I can always go to her if I am looking for something unique.
I have most of her Highland dress patterns. Her attention to detail is wonderful, just look at the military dress wedding uniform, Diana’s wedding dress, and the sailor outfits!
There are so many amazing patterns it is hard to pick just one. However, I am most delighted to see all of the Highland patterns, the Modern Welsh Costume, and Edith WWI VAD Nurse Uniform. On every pattern I appreciate the attention to detail and accuracy. What a special and talented designer! Looking forward to another 10 years of fun sewing with Genine’s patterns and designs!
The Alana Shirt & Shorts is my favorite pattern. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love Genniewren designs. My favorites are the Rosie Romper and the Alana Shorts. I love the short version of the romper, it is adorable.
I have quite a few of the Genniewren patterns and love them all! My favorites are School Nativity and Preppy Cardigan. Thank you for such a wide variety of great patterns!
Birds of a feather….. =D
Love all the patterns hard to pick favorite without the granddaughter’s input as sewing for her dolls.
What beautiful patterns these are!
What a talent you have to be able to make patterns, knit, crochet, embroidery and smock. It would be hard to choose a favorite pattern. Keep up the great work you do.
The pattern I use most is the Alana blouse – it makes such a nice, basic shirt for boys or girls. The freebie 3-flower machine embroidery design is the perfect way to embellish the bodice of a dress or apron to coordinate with the print used.
I love all the embroidery options. This is also great-I have missed seeing so many of your designs. I’ll be putting quite a few in my wishlist
I love the detail in these patterns. The royal wedding dress would be so much fun to make.
As a former student of Highland dance, I particularly enjoyed seeing the attention to added details that make each design so unique
So many cute patterns – I think the Mackenzie Dress is something my great-niece would love
Wow — so hard to choose! Right now I’ve been knitting more than sewing, so the Aran Knit Fisherman’s Sweater and Hat really caught my eye! Maybe with a kilt when it’s finished.
I loved reading your story. How sweet to bring home that shiny black machine because someone saw potential in you! The detail in your designs and embroidery are amazing! I love the stuffed lambs and the Carla Coat.
I love all of Genine’s patterns!!! I think my favorite one is the Lucy dress – I love smocking and this dress showcases it beautifully! All of Genine’s patterns go together so well and fit the dolls well!
I LOVE YOUR PATTERNS AND PLAN TO ORDER A FEW MORE ESPECIALLY THE HIGHLAND GIRL AND BOY COLLECTION. LOOKING FORWARD TO MAKING THEM SOON. SAYS FACEBOOK IS NOT AVAILABE AND TO GO TO MY EMAIL. I love the Phillipa skirt and bonus top. I really like how the 8 gore skirt flows so nicely!
its the attention to added details that make each design so unique
I just downloaded your Knit Basics pattern, and am looking forward to making a charming sweater for my dolls. If it ends up looking more like a shirt than a sweater, then I will order your beautiful cardigan knitting pattern. I don’t love to knit, but I do love knitted doll clothes. Your highland patterns are perfectly stunning, and Diana and Charles’ wedding clothes are amazing.

I love her boiler suit pattern. It’s so nice to hear about how she started and her journey.
