Boy Dolls: An Overview
For years doll fans were making their own boy dolls by replacing the wigs on their American Girl® dolls, always wondering why they couldn’t just purchase a boy doll to complete their collection. A few years back, boy dolls started to become more popular as manufacturers such as American Girl® and Our Generation® released this new category of doll. If you have ever wondered, “What are all the different types of boy dolls out there?” “Who makes them and where can I buy them?” or “How do they compare to the girl dolls?” hopefully this article will answer those questions.
Below is an overview of the most popular boy dolls in the 16-inch to 18-inch category. Some brands offer more extensive collections of boy dolls which cannot be featured in their entirety here, so we have chosen our favorites to show here.

Our pattern collection for 18-Inch Boy Doll Clothes features patterns made to fit dolls such as the American Girl® boy dolls, and others featured in the list above. Get the Pattern: Looking to make the perfect pair of jeans for your boy doll? The Liberty Jane Jeans Bundle for 18-Inch Boy Dolls features step-by-step patterns for making both bootcut and skinny jeans. Upcycle your old jeans to make your doll's wardrobe feel even more authentic, or use your favorite denim fabric to make this awesome wardrobe staple.
Most boy dolls are made by manufacturers by simply changing the face mold and hair of a doll, without any change to the size and shape of the doll body. For this reason, most boy dolls will be the same size as any girl doll from the same brand.
Get the pattern: Here an American Girl® Girl and Boy Doll are both shown wearing the Mercury Flightsuit from the pattern made by Forget Me Not Designs. As you can see by this example, the boy doll and girl doll have the same size and shape body and can wear the same size clothing.
Some designs look great on both boy and girl dolls, like many uniforms and sports clothing. Other patterns have been designed specifically for boy dolls to get that classic masculine styling and fit.

Trulyme#75 is my favorite as he looks like a boy. A real adventurous boy.
I like OG Gabe and Gotz Dylan. Either one would fit in well with our doll collection that has only one boy—My Friend Mikey!
I like them all! Maybe because boy dolls are not so frequent
Why, Dylan of course, is my favorite!
I like boy dolls because they are
not so prevalent!
I like the Truly Me #75 doll.
Love the boy in the Mercury Flight Suit, I could sew one for my grandson to go with my granddaughter’s Mercury Flight Suite.
I like the boy dolls also. They are cute, and so different from the girls we’ve always had!

Between Franco and Max. I will say Max. Hope He doesn’t get into as much trouble as Max, my four year old grandson.
Andy! He looks so much more like a current boy.
I absolutely love the AGAT Max doll and am saving up to get him, but of course he’s much slimmer than the usual 18" doll. I do have an AGAT Clementine. For regular size 18" size, I really like Truly Me #75 to match up with the AG girls.
Cute patterns
Love, love the 18" dolls! The Truly Me #75 is such a cutie! Reminds me of several little boys! <3
Truly me #75 would match Jenny the doll I have been making clothes for. They would make a great pair. For my daughter’s wedding I could match their outfits like the bride and grooms for the shower and wedding.
My favorite boy doll is Truly Me #75. He looks like one of my grandchildren.
I like Truly Me #75 best. This doll reminds me the most of the boys I taught in kindergarten. His clothes are typical of the style the students wore. I am no longer teaching, but this doll sends me back to memory lane.
They are all darling! the Gotz doll was new to me . I like him and #75 Truly Me!
I love the Truly Me #75; he is adorable!’

I have never had a boy doll. Might be nice.
I like the American girl #77.
My Granddaughter is an only child and for her to have a little brother (even if only to “pretend”) would be wonderful. She is blond and blue-eyed like her Mom, but the My Siblings, Andy, with brown hair and brown eyes would be just like her Dad. Perfect !
I have yet to own a boy doll boy. I’d love to invite PARKER into my home. He would be a welcome addition.
I had a hard time getting my first boy doll… Then the Dr. Who pattern came out! I love the look of number 75 American girl doll.
My favorite boy dolls are Kidz ‘n Cats dolls designed by Sonja Hartmann. They are slim body 18” dolls with hard bodies. Although they are no longer being manufactured, they can still be found on the secondary market. Also, Sonja Hartmann’s daughter, Gesa, from time to time offers custom dolls via Facebook. Although I like the dolls with the Classic faces such as Jakob and Mike, my favorites are those with the Mischievous faces like Robert and Niko.
Boy doll #77 looks just like my grandson and would perfect as a playmate for my granddaughte’s girl American Girl Doll !!

I would love to have a boy doll to sew for …I think they are all cute!
I would love to have Dylan join my Gotz girls! I have 6 grandchildren who love playing with my dolls and one of the boys recently asked me, ‘how come you don’t have a boy doll too"? Dylan would be a very welcome addition to both my doll and human families.

I have many boy dolls, both manufactured and converted, My favorite from your list is Parker by Gotz. Pixie Faire has the best collection of patterns for boy clothes anywhere!
I have Parker and Truly Me #75. I had never heard of the My Sibling/MyPal dolls, but I think they are really cute and I appreciate the story behind them. Thanks for including them along with other boy dolls. Back in the 1950s when I was a girl, I wanted a boy doll. I don’t know who converted a Saucy Walker doll because he had yarn hair instead of a doll wig, but I was very happy with him. Glad there are more choices now.
I like Andy! He looks just like my son!

It would be awesome to update this review of Boy Dolls. Via E has a Brothers Adventures line with 3 boys in all at the present time getting ready to be released. Downfall only a limited number available of each doll. Plus side, fully posable with joints in the knees and hands like action figures. Able to hold poses without stand. They can get wet! Each has a story line. Not just the same face mold with different hair but all have their own features.
