The Carnaby St. Dress by Liberty Jane is So cute and versatile! We're loving the swish and swirl of the flowing circle skirt design! With summer in full swing we've modified this design a bit to create an adorable sundress or a swimsuit coverup your doll can wear anytime this summer!
It's super easy to do -- all you have to do is modify the sleeve pattern piece and add ties to the neckline, and then continue on with the regular pattern instructions to complete the dress. (Click on the image, or the link below, to view the original pattern on Pixie Faire.)
What you will need:
☼ Liberty Jane Carnaby St. Dress
☼ Lightweight cotton fabric
☼ Scissors
☼ Ruler
☼ Blank piece of printer paper
☼ Pen or Pencil
☼ ¼ inch elastic
Step 1:
Go ahead and print out the Carnaby St. Dress pattern if you haven’t already. You will need to cut out the pieces from pages 28-30.
Step 2:
Take your piece of paper and fold it in half. Draw a 1in. line right next to the fold and close to the top. Position the center fold line of the sleeve pattern piece on the end of your line. Trace the top of your sleeve pattern just on one side. Without moving the pattern, go down 2½ inches from the top corner of the sleeve and draw a ¼ in. line off the side of the sleeve. Connect the end of your line and the top corner of the sleeve together with a straight line. Now draw a straight line from the ¼ line to the fold, creating the bottom of your sleeve. Cut out your new sleeve pattern piece and unfold it.
Step 3:
Cut out your fabric, making sure you use the new sleeve pattern in place of the original and also cutting out 2 strips 1in. by 5in. for the ties.
Step 4:
Turn down the short end ¼ of an inch on one side of each of the ties as shown in the above picture, sew down. Then sew the ties into a tube, right sides together. Turn them right sides out with a bobby pin. Find the tutorial right Here!
Step 5:
Sew the dress front and back shoulder seams together and the inner facing shoulder seams together.
Then zig-zag or serge the outer edges of the facing.
Step 6:
Pin the ties to the neck of the dress, positioning them to your liking and then tack them in place. Sew the facing onto the neckline as directed in the original pattern instructions. Topstitch the neckline and then press down the ties. Optional: Tie a knot in the bottom of each tie.
Step 7:
Roll hem the bottom of the sleeves. Cut two lengths of elastic 5in. long, zig-zag stitch the elastic to the wrong side of the bottom hem of the sleeve, stretching the elastic to reach both ends of the sleeve. Gather along the top of the sleeve to fit the sleeve opening and then sew onto the sleeve opening.
Step 8:
Follow steps 21-26 in the pattern instructions to finish the dress.

I would use a light flowery fabric and make it a kimono over a sleeveless top and capri’s.
I’d use a gauzy, white fabric and pair it with a long, boho skirt and boots.
i’m not so into wild print but i’d make into one
I would style this with sunglasses, sandals, and I would make her a cute bag.
And idea for patters- Harry Potter costumes. Currently I’ll be making it myself.
I would add a big, floppy sun hat, oversized beach bag, sandals, and sunglasses.
I would add some leggings and wear it with some sandals.
This dress will look cute with a matching scrunchie on the hair or arm and with cute platform wicker sandals. A straw sunhat will also go well with the dress.
I would make it a little shorter and put shorts with it.
I would pair it with a hat and a large tote bag.
I would add sun visor and beach bag to match and sandals and beach towel too
I’m thinking that I might add a couple of belt loops, and put a ribbon and bow for a sort of empire dress look. I think I would hold off doing the belt loops until I was sure about the look. ggg
Add a floppy hat
I would make a wide brim hat and a hobo style bag to put a swim suit and sandals in it and head to the beach. Thanks for the hack! Sew much fun!
A little scarf around the neck with a tie in front.
I’d like it as a maxi dress.
i would add a swag to watch the dress.
Marion
I would add a little bit of crocheted lace to the neckline, cuffs, and hem of the blue and white dress in the pictures and then style it with the Carmen Crocheted Espadrilles and the Springtime Sun Hat (both patterns from Sweet Pea Fashions) and the Beach Tote Crochet Pattern (from Stacy and Stella) with all three crochet patterns made in beige yarn or thread. I’d also take a long strip of the blue and white fabric and tie it around the hat like a scarf and add an appropriately sized shell or sand dollar to the center of the bow.
I would add lace to the sleeve hem and neckline.
Add a little apron and get ready to bake!!
Bright colours for the dress with some sandals and a straw hat would be perfect for summer.
This is so cute. Thanks
Very nice.
I love – love – love your Pixie Faire Inspiration Gallery. It has motivated me to experiment with “cut-create-and-paste.” One of my favorite hat patterns is SPRINGTIME STRAW HAT CROCHET. Made in white it is the perfect match for this summer dress. It begs to be decorated with an accent blue flower and ribbon attached on one side. Love the purse show in the photo. Made in a matching white would be the perfect compliment.
Great instructions for the sleeve change.
Cute hack! I would lengthen the dress, and sew up the middle for a ‘romper’ look or just a long maxi…those sleeves are perfect! Thank you !
I would pair this tunic/dress with leggings and a bucket style hat.
I would add a bathing suit, some flip flops, a beach bag and a wide brim hat.
I would add a wide brimmed hat, big beach bag, and strap-y sandals.
so cute
I would use a bright flower print and add a cute straw hat from this month’s SWC Course’
I would add a floppy hat and a long necklace.
I would use a bright summer print and pair with sandals and a big floppy hat.
I would make it out of a cute summery fabric and pair it with sandals to wear out shopping with the girls.
A little belt made like the neck ties!
I would make it a little longer so it would have more uses..
i would use a sheer fabric in a bright color for a cute coverup.
I would use a fabric with large, bright flowers, such as orange and yellow.
I would open the front of the dress up to use as a swim suit cover up and get a new straw hat and a beach bag to complete the day at the beach outfit.
I would lengthen it a bit and add a sash or belt.
I would make the v-neck into a round-neck. I would also lengthen the skirt and put an elastic waist on it.
I would style this dress with a beach bag, sandals and a pair of sunglasses! So cute!
Add side slits and turn it into a beach cover up for summer fun.
I would shorten it to tunic length and add leggings for a relaxed lounging outfit or pajamas. That’s just one idea though. It is a very versatile and cute pattern.
I could see this cover-up in a light, sheer fabric as a beach accessory. Use one of the new straw hats or visors and be set for a day at the beach.
I will use a wild and sassy fabric for this garment
I think I’d sew a few tiny beads on this dress. I love hand sewing beads as accents and trim

I’d make this pattern in an off-white fabric and add bright colors of embroidery at the neckline then add a floppy hat and a beach bag.
