**UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway, we have a winner! Lena Juka said, "Definitely a princess. Females super heroes would be more compassionate and caring than male super heroes. GIRL POWER!"
All you need is some fabric scraps, cute ribbon or trim, some blank paper and a ruler. I used this technique to make a fun, short superhero-y cape, and a longer princess cape.
First, grab your paper and we'll make a basic pattern. (Don't worry, it's actually a lot easier than it sounds....!)
1. Draw a long vertical line down the middle of your paper. At the top of this, draw a 3" line.
2. Then, mark a point 3/8" down from the top of the "T".
3. Draw a curved line from the mark up to the corners of the top line. This is the neck of your cape!
4. Then, measure down the length of your cape. (Short cape: 8 1/2", long cape 17". You might need to tape on a second sheet of paper...) Draw in a line for the bottom of your cape. Make it as wide as your finished cape (short: 8"; long 10-12").
5. Connect the line at the bottom, to the points up at each corner of the neckline. From the neck, measure down the length of the cape, and mark.
Then, draw in your curved hemline. Ta Da!
If you are making a felt cape, you're all set: cut the pattern out of felt.
Then, use felt scraps to make a fun logo for the back of the cape. Sew that down....
...and sew on a piece of twill tape, ribbon, or other fun trim around the neckline. About 20" works well.
If you want to make a cape out of something that will fray, like lace or fabric, add an extra 1/4" around all the edges of your pattern before cutting it out.
Then, serge or zig zag over the raw edges. Turn them to the backside of the fabric, and topstitch them down.
Sew on a tie, and there you are -- another awesome new cape!
If you could be either a princess or a superhero, which would you be? Why?
(Princesses are fabulous, but I'd probably be a superhero because then I could fly...)
Thanks for following along everyone, and have fun with this!
For Pixie Faire,
Melinda
I’d be a Super Hero Princess! My granddaughters frequently wear capes with their princess dress up clothes, and I thought it was the best of both worlds, I was very proud of their out-of the-box ingenuity. Now with this tutorial, their AG dolls will be able to join them on their save the world adventures! Thanks!
Tough decision – but I’d rather be a super hero so I could help people in distress!
I would be a super hero so I could help my son and daughter, they both have medical problems and I could help my great granddaughter who has autism. Right now I am not strong enough to help anyone. This way I could gain the special power to help everyone!
I would want to be a SUPER Hero, so I could help all the people that have nothing and are in need. My super hero deed would be to be positive, smiling and friendly, never leaving anyone out, but bringing all together in Peace and Harmony. What a wonderful world that would be???? Pass it on…. .
Great tutorial; so simple and fun! Thank you very much!
I think I would choose a princess, because I could wear all the beautiful ball gowns.
Since I only had a Wonder Woman body briefly, I want to be a princess. I love all the beautiful ball room gowns and the fancy riding habits. Oh and doesn’t everyone want to wear a crown full of different colors of jewels. Oh and the throne, mine would be pink, red and turquoise.
a super hero princess so I can be royal but super
Superhero – so I could do all the things tha my family believe I can!!!
I would be a super hero, because they don’t wait for help to come, they do something to fix it.
My 6 year old granddaughter is so into princesses and fairies, I would have to be a princess to remain a part of the family.
Superhero for sure. I would be #1 with my grandson for sure! __
Super hero for sure…as a busy mom to three kids ages 7 and under, I need some super hero powers to make daily life easier and to come to the rescue for any of my mommy (or daddy) friends. Plus, those powers would allow me more time to play princess with my daughter.
I would be a “Princess”. A good princess can be a super-hero incognito! She can declare wrongs to be righted. She can be a model of goodness and sacrifice.
Ultimately she has the power to make her kingdom better for all her people (subjects)!
I would like to be a super hero. Since I was little my hero is Wonder Woman, and still is. I still collect Wonder Woman items and recently I bought a Wonder Woman coustome from Persmart and I’m making a doll dress out of it. I also made one last year, which needs finishing. She fights for good and protects the innocent. I think that’s what I’d like to do.
Definitely a SUPERHERO…but a secretive superhero. I would want to help make our world a better place. Setting an example for my two daughters ages 9 and 7 that one person can make a difference. :0)
i would rather be a super hero. Then I could help people everywhere. However, I would do it secretly so no you would know it was me.
A princess………it would justify all the toads I have kissed! LOL
I would like to be the seamstress extraordinaire to the princess and the super heroe, two personalities of the same character. I would have all the fun of choosing the fabrics, fashioning the embellishments, and sharing the joy in that with my apprentices.
I’d be a superhero with mad sewing skills to sew doll clothes for all the little girls in the world!
I want to be a rich super hero. I would like the perks of the princess (clothes and housekeeping) but they aren’t worth giving up my freedom to be who I am and do what I want. I would go crazy always being in the public eye and having to follow strict rules.
As a rich super hero, I can still have my housekeeping. If nothing else, I can act and enjoy the clothes that way. And it fits right in with my passion of helping others!
I would rather be a super hero than a princess because i am more adventurous in my activities than I imagine a princess would be.
I’d be a superhero so I could help others.
I would absolutely be a princess. I am a mother of a 4 year old boy and 9 year old girl, a wife and full time homemaker. Therefore, I’m already a super hero. ;)
I would be a very liberated princess. Being a Superhero is too much work at my age!
i would rather be a priness, because i am not able to be active as a superhero would need to be!
I’d be a superhero and my power would be to heal all sadness, depression, and loneliness.
I would easily want to be a princess. Hello, long and beautiful dresses!
I would rather be a superhero. They seem to have all the fun!
Oh this is easy! I would be Ariel because I love water and always said I should be a mermaid.
I would like to be a princess. Then other people would cook and clean for me. The pretty clothes and jewelry are a nice perk, but right now, I have to fix supper.
Being a princess is my dream…To be beautiful and ALWAYS helping someone, someplace. sometime.
I would like to be a princess. That way when I sew I can order SOMEONE ELSE to fix my messes rofl..
I would be a princess because I love all the fancy clothes.
I would like to be a superhero so I would have the energy and ability to do things for others that I can’t do now.
I would like to be a Princess, if only for a little while,I would have no worries and would be able to play with my dolls whenever I want to.
Princess, then I’d have all the time I need to make clothes for my young princess and her doll princeses!
I think I would be a princess, more time to sew, less time doing chores! =)
Princess so I could help those less fortunate than I am. I have been in situation to need food. Now we grow extra in our garden to help others. It makes us feel helpful. We do not ask for anything in return. It’s good to see delight on faces.
I think I would like to be a princess because I would be held up to a higher standard to treat people who are less fortunate than I am. I think being a princess entails being a better human being and a person of great character. All women and girls are princesses!!!
I’d be a superhero, for sure! Superheroes help to take care of situations for those who are vulnerable..aging adults, children, animals, medically fragile, underfed, emotionally or physically disabled, homeless, spiritually uneasy. Even the smallest gift of time and talents and offerings to one another qualify YOU for this tole.
I would like to be both, princess by day having princess like fun and super hero by night helping where needed secretly.
Love the princesses, but I ’d rather be a superhero !!! I could help many people and fly like the wind!
It’s like in a superman story, princess by day and superhero at night, or tough times. Just switch the cape and you are on your way to better the world. Lace cape would perfectly go with the Elsa’s dress I’m making to surprise my little Spiderella (Spider girl in Cinderella shoes :-)
)
I have been a princess all my—long—life. Time to be a superhero!
Super Hero, but I’d design my distinguishing outfit for more function and less skin.
Girls can do anything they set their minds to so I would choose princess super hero. I could dress, do nails, makeup, and have tea parties and be good and kind and still change into my super hero cape to help get rid of all the evil in the world with my super powers.
A pricess cape as both my grand daughter’s tell me that they are princesses . And if i had this I could make more to go with the outfits that I would be making them such and Cinderella and sleeping beauty and Anna from frozen.
Definitely a princess. Females super heros would be more compassionate and caring than male super heros. GIRL POWER!
It would depend which granddaughter I made the cape for. Two would want the superhero cape and three would want the princess. :)
Oooooh…I would want to be a Super Hero! ( my kiddo’s already call me the Masked Momma…do to cancer & surgery on nose to fix! lol) But know my grangirlie would choose being a Princess (she already is to us!)…..and since it is HER doll,,,,giggle…we choose Princess! :)
A Superhero so I could help as many people as I could
princesses can do everything. They are kind and pretty.
A superhero – no question – The only problem would be choosing which superpowers I would have to save the world.
Superhero for sure! Who wouldn’t want to fly around and save the world.
Super Heros can be for Boys or Girls, dolls or bears—what adventures await ! !
Oops. Answered wrong. My grand would be a princess, anything princess. She loves princesses.
Why not a princess superhero? I guess I’ll have to go with a super hero, because I do like to help people….I’d do it in very fashionable outfits though…
My youngest grand would want a matching one for herself.
I would be a superhero since they help people. My daughter would pick a princess.
I would choose to be a Superhero because they have the special power to help people in dire danger.
I’ll choose for my special granddaughter. She’d like to be a princess because she loves fashion, glitz, fixing hair, doing her nails. Most of all she loves doing these things on girl’s night with the queen, her mom
these are great. I was looking for an idea for a cape. My daughter says her AG doll wants to be a witch. Thanks for the tutorial.
If I could choose to be a princess or a superhero, which would I be? Hmm… toughie. I think I would choose to be a superhero. Then you get cool powers :-)
Super hero! Princesses live in a fishbowl. I’d rather have the freedom than glitz.
I’m already a Princess. I’d be a super hero so I can fix some of the problems that are everywhere.
Uh… I would be both! There is no reason why I can’t be a princess by day, going through legal channels by day to better my kingdom…and then a caped vigilante by night!
super hero – there are a lot of wrongs in this world that need to be righted!
A princess – I could help all the children in my kingdom – design pretty clothes for them and have tea parties with them. I could travel the world and see other kingdoms.
thats a hard one… but probably a superhero, cause then i’d be able to meet thor and we could go around being godly together!
Why not a superhero princess like Princess Mira Nova from Buzz Lightyear? hehe.. if that doesn’t count though, I’d choose a princess.
I’d be a Princess. Since there just can’t be too many princesses. :)
My choice would be princess, because princesses can have all the glitz & glam they want. Besides I have always loved the Cinderella story.
A super hero with the power of endless energy! That would be awesome and I could finally get “everything” done :)
I would like to be Snow White and take care of those 12 dwarfs.
I would be a super hero & protect my Princess Granddaughter
I would probably be a princess because I love watching Disney movies (especially Frozen) =)
I think I’d be a princess because they get to wear fabulous outfits and jewelry! What girl wouldn’t love that?

Princess because I have a hero.
