This 1830s dress by Thimbles and Acorns features beret sleeves which are cut from a full circle of cloth. The wide flat appearance of the sleeves gives the illusion of broad sloping shoulders which defined the fashionable silhouette of the Romantic Era.
Sleeves can be made plain or topped with a decorative sleeve cap which further accentuates the slope of the shoulders. You can choose a simple flat bodice style or one with added fullness that is caught up in pleats or shirring at the shoulders.
The neckline can be left plain, outlined with a narrow lace edging, or finished with an elegant draped lace trim. The skirting is neatly pleated into the waistband and features a padded hem that can be made from a simple band or decorative overlay to enhance the fullness and elegance of the skirt.
The dress closes in the back with three buttons along the bodice and a snap at the waistband. Snaps or hook and loop tape can be used instead of buttons if preferred. As a finishing touch, a double-wrapped sash is tied at the waist to pull all the Romantic details together.
This PDF sewing pattern is sized to fit 18 inch dolls such as American Girl® and other similarly sized dolls.
