My favorite tip Is to serge the raw edges of my fabric after I’ve pre-shrunk it. That way I know it has been pre-washed when I have it stored.

My favorite sewing tip or trick is using double folded bias binding for facing, instead of turning edges under. First open the binding and stitch onto right side of the garment using the first fold as a guide, then refold the binding, turn under and top stitch close to the edge. It makes a neat, finished neckline.

My tip is to buy clear Christmas baubles in the after Christmas sales, then put scraps of your children’s Christmas outfit fabric in them along with the year. Do this each year to have a wonderful record of their Christmas outfits as they grow up.

My favorite sewing trick was taught to me by my mother, a professional seamtress, among other professions. She always ironed (pressed) every piece of fabric and seam as she sewed the garment together. I have continued to follow her lead and my garments go together much easier and come out looking well made…like a professional. ☺

My favorite sewing tip is to shop thrift stores for fabric. Drapes and curtains provide an abundance of fabric for a multitude of uses. I purchase used clothing and turn it into stylish and inexpensive doll clothes for my nieces AGs.

My favorite sewing tip was told to me by my mother in law many years ago. She worked in a sewing factory, so I took what advice she had to offer eagerly. She said to not be discouraged if you have to rip a seam. Her point was to explore your sewing talent with the mindset that no one is perfect and to keep trying till you get it just right. I have followed that philosophy for over 40 years and I still love to sew!

My favorite tip is: a seam or intersection of seams that is too thick can be flattened with a little hammering. I have a small jewelry hammer that I use for this. I also cover the seam with a scrap of muslin to protect the fabric.

My favorite sewing tip is to use a zigzag stitch over gimp cord for gathering. No need to worry about breaking gathering stitches as the cord is very strong. It can also be removed very easily once the gathered piece is securely stitched.

My favorite sewing tip is to cut several items to sew in advance of beginning to sew, and to have the ironing board up and handy so that sew can be pressed without delay. Have a beverage nearby and listen to music you enjoy.

My jr high sewing teacher always taught us “P is for patience” to remember which way the loose thread should point when loading bobbins. I literally think this every time I load a bobbin (even through the years when my Singer loaded as a q). My grandma taught me never to rip out a seam when frustrated. My brother taught me to be more careful with my pins and needles.

My favorite sewing tip or trick is to iron every seam flat. I join front bodice to back….then iron shoulder seam flat. I then sew lining shoulder seams and iron flat. I sew lining to bodice up the back seam, around the neck, other back seam, trim seams, turn lining to the inside and the neck line flat. In other words, iron everything as you go!

After fifty + years of sewing, I try to always make notes on each pattern. Sometimes it is just a note on how much lace of edging I used, or a slight change in sizing, length, or procedure. Whatever comes up, it is so much easier the next time around to know what I did instead of guessing. Each note is attached to the pattern cutting layout directions so I can’t miss them!

My favorite sewing tip: instead of seeing two rows of long stitches when gathering, is to see one row of a large zigzag stitch over a length of pearl cotton crochet thread. You must be careful not to catch the cotton thread in the zigzag stitch. Pull the cotton thread to gather and when complete just pull the pearl thread out.

My favorite sewing tip is to make two loose gathering seams, when you need to gather something, and then sew with a tighter stitch in between those two seams, to give nice even gathers. You can easily pull out the gathering stitch that is visible on the right side of the garment.

“Sew with a relaxed bottom”. A tip from a clothing teacher many years ago. For example, when sewing gathers, the bottom fabric should not be tense. I must say this to my self at least once per garment.

My favourite sewing tip is to use an invisible thread as my bobbin thread so I don’t need to change it. I will also use it as my thread so there’s no issue with tension.
