I’m not sure what the most meaningful gift would be but I’ve made a quilt for a nephew, purses for granddaughters, stuffed animals for other grandchildren. Each project is done as a labor of love and given in hopes that it will bless the recipient greatly.

My sister, my daughter and I each stitched a section while living over 1000mis apart at the time. To finish the piece I included a miniature of the generational photo we had of the 4 of us. After all the airmiles this piece accumulated it arrived only 2 days before her birthday. Years later it now hangs in my home.

It was at the time she found out she had celiac disease and was tossing out her organic mill ground flour, which she loved. She tossed the bag and I sneaked it home and turned it into the cutest zipper sling bag.

The most meaningful gift I made someone was two colonial American Girl doll dresses for my niece, and I also made her a wooden doll bed for her Felicity doll. The thing that made it so meaningful was that I let her help me sew the mattress and bedding and that started her interest in sewing! The Felicity doll she has was the one my older sister played with, 9 years later I did, and 11 years after me, my niece does!

The most meaningful (and time consuming) gifts I have made for someone is the hand cross stitched birth announcement samplers I did for each of my 5 granddaughters and then had custom framed. They love them, the 2 oldest granddaughters are 18 and 14 and they still have them hanging in their room. My 6th grandchild (a boy) got a machine embroidered birth announcement sampler! It was still meaningful but didn’t have the wherewithal to hand cross stitch another!!

I have made gifts for my loved ones all my life, so it is very difficult to remember and pick one. I think that making special drapes and duvet covers to decorate my granddaughters’ bedrooms when they were small, was probably my most cherished memory. They loved their rooms, until they moved.

The most meaningful gift for me I think is when I sew blankets for the homeless in our city… they are nothing fancy but I know they are sewn nicely and will keep someone warm!

There are so many that are memorable but the most precious to me was the week 60 years ago I spent with my grandmother sewing baby clothes for her upstairs single mother neighbor. I was seven and her sewing machine sat in a closet under the stairs. She gave me the gift of love for sewing that week that has lasted me my whole life.
