Her father was a coal miner but when the mine closed, her family had to leave their home in the Appalachian Mountains. Dell and her mother still visit their old neighborhood, bringing food and blankets to friends in need. Dell loves walking the high trails, which make her feel like she 'swallowed sunshine'. She tries hard to share that feeling by writing and singing her own songs. Maybe then she can show people the true beauty of her mountains.

Her family own a bakery, so their apartment above it always smells like something wonderful to eat! Lack of rain dries up the crops and food is scarce—but when the rain finally comes it brings mosquitoes carrying the terrible disease, malaria.
