Everybody needs a go-to summer tote- perfect for a trip to the beach, the park, or the farmer's market. The tie strap detail creates a fun and casual look, and the simple design of the bag means it can be made in a variety of fabrics, from quilting cotton to crochet yardage.
All the time we come across little bags when we're out shopping, from gift card holders to small dust bags for jewelry, and we can't help thinking- hey, this would make a great bag for a doll!
This quick and easy tutorial shows how we made a doll-sized tote bag from a Magnolia bag which had the right width but was too long for a doll bag. This basic concept can also be used to make a bag from scratch, just by cutting out similar sized rectangles and sewing the side and bottom seems first.
Start by deciding on the ideal measurements for your finished tote. We did this by comparing a tote we already had whose size we were happy with (this gift card holder from Whole Foods!).
Our ideal finished measurements were about 4-inches wide by 3-inches tall.
Once you have determined your measurements, cut horizontally across the top of the bag, making sure to add an extra 1/4-inch for the hem.
With the help of quilters tape (optional), press and hem the top of the bag all the way around.
Cut two pieces of trim to use as bag handles. Measure on your doll the appropriate strap length for a shoulder bag. We made our straps about 7-inches long.
Mark the ideal placement of the bag handle. Sew the strap to the wrong side of the bag by making an X with your stitches. Repeat with the second handle on the other side of the bag.
And your DIY upcycled tote bag is complete!

Everything I have ever made from this site I have enjoyed the results. I like recycling and making new items; I will do both.
I love the idea of packaging bags recycled as a doll totes. There are so many cute designs that could easily accommodate a cute logo.
I’ve been making purses for my dolls for a long time, but never thought to make a market tote. They were really cute and I have a considerable amount of small jewelry bags that I think will be great for this project. Thanks for sharing this hack.
I like the Emma Tote bag.
I pick the Hobo bag made from crochet fabric. It’s so summer-y.
I would make a tote like the tutorial above, except I’d square out the bottom corners and add a pocket to the back. I also size the totes to fit the doll’s needs: Beach Tote: striped canvas and can hold the towel, sunlotion, magazine/book, etc. or Tourist Tote: recycle a logo stamped fabric and make it large enough for a doll’s wallet, sunglasses, water bottle, etc.
I think the crocheted urban tote is really cute.
My fave would be the upcycle as I really enjoy doing that with things. Our grands love having their dolls wear things made from our well loved clothing.

Well I liked them both but to pick one I like the DIY SUMMER TOTE!! The reason I picked that is bec with that chosen Magnolia bag you can make a very nice tote from the bottom of the bag and stitch where you cut on the top of the bag to make a duffle bag for going to the beach or lugging laundry! Never waste anything!! Growing up we had duffles with our names on my mom sent away for them from a free promotion.I think all 6 of us kids got one!! Mine said: “Marie’s bag”! So the duffle you make can be decorated any way you want!
Love the white cross body bag, perfect look for going to the market.
Very cute bags for lucky dolls and girls.
I can see our twin dolls with the red and white striped shoulder bags. So classy.
