Meena, by Genniewren Designs, is a very versatile pattern comprising a Sulwar Kameez (tunic and pants) and a dress in two lengths – mid-calf length and maxi length. The dresses are reminiscent of the Hippy era and would look very groovy made in funky prints and bright colors.
The Meena Kameez tunic/dress PDF pattern has a choice of three sleeve styles and a choice of three neckline treatments. The neckline treatments can be mixed and matched, as can the sleeves. It is traditional for the Kameez to have elbow length or longer sleeves but you could also bind the armholes with contrast bias binding to make a sleeveless summer tunic if preferred.
The authentically styled Sulwar (or Shalwar) pants for the Sulwar Kameez are pleated onto a yoke and have a contrast stiffened cuff. Traditionally the pants cuffs may be embroidered in a pattern to match the embroidery on the tunic yoke and sleeve cuffs.
This pants pattern would make perfect harem pants using organza, chiffon, lightweight silk or rayon fabric. It would also make ideal pirate pants in a striped or funky fabric. Mixing up fabric prints and adding rick rack or other trims to the cuff edges will Euro-style the pants and make them a perfect easy fit outfit for the summer with a teeshirt or peasant blouse.
There is also plenty of room on the front of the tunic or dress to add machine or hand embroidery or other embellishments, should you so wish. The choice is yours!
