Love the look of a straw hat, but can't find one you like to fit your doll. This pattern, by Thimbles and Acorns, will show you how to create three different types of doll-size straw hats from a single ladies size paper raffia straw hat. Use half of the brim of the hat to make a Summery Sun visor with an elastic back that will be perfect for day at the beach or a summer picnic. Want to do a little historical costuming? Use the other half of the brim to make a Soft Crown Regency Bonnet. Finally, reshape the crown of the hat to make a modern looking Somerset hat or a 19th century Poke Bonnet. All these hats are fairly easy to make and a great way to repurpose used paper straw hats.
This pattern is designed to fit 18-inch dolls such as American Girl®.
Suggested Straw Goods: Summery Sun Visor can be made from the brim of a braided paper raffia straw hat or visor. 100% paper raffia is recommended, but paper woven with a fine polyester fiber can work as well. A lightweight real straw can be used, but may be more difficult to work with. Woven straw is not recommended for this project. Soft Crown Regency Bonnet can be made from the brim of a braided paper raffia straw hat, visor, or placemat. 100% paper raffia is recommended, but paper woven with a fine polyester fiber can work as well. A lightweight real straw can be used, but may be more difficult to work with. Woven straw is not recommended for this project. Somerset Hat or Poke Bonnet is made from the crown of a braided paper raffia straw hat. 100% paper raffia is recommended, but paper woven with a fine polyester fiber can work as well. Real or woven straw is not recommended for this project. And adult size crown was used for this pattern, but a child size crown yields the best results. Suggested Fabrics: Summery Sun Visor Trim in light to medium weight cotton fabrics. Not suitable for knits. Soft Crown Regency Bonnet in light to medium weight cotton, linen, or silk. Not suitable for knits. Interfacing for Somerset Hat or Poke Bonnet in medium weight muslin.
