The kirtle and smock were key components of the Renaissance wardrobe as they could be worn alone as a day dress or as a foundation garment underneath a formal gown. The Renaissance Faire Side Laced Kirtle by Thimbles and Acorns includes a square necked smock with optional blackwork embroidery at the neckline and cuffs. It fastens with the back with a single snap or button closure and is finished with a subtle asymmetrical hem. The Kirtle laces up each side with three sets of eyelets and fastens at the shoulders with two sets of eyelets. The two piece detachable sleeves allow the full smock sleeves to spill out at the shoulders and elbows in classic style and the traditional coif rests securely on the back of the head to complete the historic Renaissance look. As an added bonus, make a spunky present day version. The smock features elbow length sleeves and a slit asymmetrical hemline that is topped with a kirtle that has been updated with a two-piece A-line asymmetrical skirt.
