Charlotte 18" Cloth Doll Pattern

8 reviews   |

Learn to sew, just like Mary and Laura Ingalls with these kid-tested and kid approved beginner level sewing patterns by Thimbles and Acorns!   Starting with the Nine-patch tote project, practice sewing straight seams and lining up seam lines. Made entirely with straight seams, the tote is a quick and easy project that introduces such skills as topstitching, matching symbols, and pleating.   It comes in two sizes, one for you and one for your doll!

When you finish your tote, move on to Charlotte's simple Prairie dress. Made with only three pieces, this dress is an ideal project for a beginning seamstress. The dress closes in back with only one button or snap. Instructions for making a basic hand sewn buttonhole are included for adventurous seamstresses that would like to try their hand at making a buttonhole just like Laura did.

Once you have mastered the basics, make a Charlotte doll just like Laura Ingalls' for yourself and a smaller version for your doll. This traditional easy to make rag doll has attached shoes and is finished with yarn hair and button eyes. The large Charlotte doll is 18-inches tall and designed to fit standard 18-inch doll clothes.

This PDF sewing pattern contains instructions for making one big rag doll, one small rag doll, a dress for each of both sizes of dolls, and two sizes of totes.

Small Rag Doll

My granddaughter has an American Girl Kirsten doll. She wanted me to sew Sari, a small rag doll that belonged to Kirsten. This pattern easily adapted to match the now retired AG rag doll. The most drastic change was the hair. I used my foundation paper techniques for sewing body parts as some of the pieces are quite small. The directions were easy to follow.

Small Charlotte doll

I wanted to make a small rag doll for our 18” dolls. Small Charlotte was a serious challenge, much more frustrating than I had anticipated. I struggled to get her tiny feet and legs to turn right side out and her dress almost did not fit her arms. Just as I am near finished, her hair starts to fall out.! I do not feel any of these problems were design flaws, the finished product is adorable. I did rename her to “Ida Bean” because it is for Addy Walker.

Charlotte cloth doll

Easy to follow instructions, my doll ended up being a little bit shorter than 18" so will add some length to the body next time.

Wonky Raggy Doll

I wanted a cloth doll that would fit clothes for an 18" "plastic" doll and found this one. Unfortunately she is all out of proportion for my liking. Her head is too small, her body is too long and her legs are too short. I have since tweaked the pattern to my own liking but I still wasn't happy with it. After scouring the internet again I have since found another pattern (free) that is much better, and she looks lovely and shares American Doll and 18" doll clothes. Not worth the price.
