The Serena swirly skirt, by Genniewren Designs, is a funky, modern spiral-gored skirt with real “twirl factor” that’s perfect for your 18” dolls such as American Girl®.
The skirt has two views a full, gathered, twelve-gored version with an elasticated back and a six gore fit and flare version.
View A, the twelve gore skirt, has optional ties for that oh-so-popular big bow at the back, and the skirt is a full circle!
View B is a fit and flare version with no gathers.
A choice of hem finishes adds to the versatility of this design. Instructions are included in this PDF sewing pattern for a baby hem, a bias bound hem and a hem trimmed with rick rack. You could also do a rolled hem on your serger, or you could even add a ruffle to add even more Euro-style flair to finish off the skirt.
The Serena swirly skirt design allows your imagination to run riot by mixing and matching colors, prints, plains, stripes and checks and trims. You can use a different fabric for each gore as shown on some of the cover examples, or you can alternate panels from two different fabrics as in the pink/black skirt. The choice is yours!
This pattern is a great way to use up scraps left over from other dressmaking projects. The skirt gore piece will easily fit in a 7“ x 8” area, and the waistband and optional ties are made from 2” wide strips so you can use quite small scraps to make this Euro-inspired skirt. Alternatively you can pick up a fat quarter pack and make your doll a skirt from this pattern and still have plenty of fabric left over to make shirts, hats or other accessories.
Recommended Fabrics: Suitable for woven fabrics only, e.g. cotton and cotton blends, quilting cottons, poplin, broadcloth, gingham etc.
