Happy Tiers Dress 18" Doll Clothes Pattern

3 reviews   |

This cute pattern offers a variety of versions and is perfect for mixing prints or color blocking.

The Happy Tiers Dress is inspired by classroom years when students excitedly counted off the days before they could celebrate moving on to the next grade and the beginning of summer vacation. This little dress features a lined bodice, faux front placket, gathered tiered skirt, a choice of elasticized sleeves, butterfly sleeves, or sleeveless, a ruffled collar or collarless, and a back closure. The pattern includes a tutorial on perfecting gathers.

This PDF sewing pattern by FROG Princess Fashions is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.  This pattern is modeled on modern, Mattel brand American Girl® dolls with slimmer bodies, but has enough ease to fit many of the older style Pleasant Company dolls. Be sure to compare the pattern pieces to your doll prior to cutting. The version in pink, yellow, and blue is pictured on a doll with waist measurement of 10½ .”

Happy Tiers

I was able to test an advance copy of this dress, and just love it! There are lots of options to make every iteration different … coordinated prints, all one color, collar or not, sleeves or just ruffles, lace trim or rickrack - so many choices! The faux button band down the front is a cute decorative touch, but the dress closes in the back with simple hook and loop tape for easy dressing. I like that this dress is designed with fat quarters in mind … it’s sometimes hard to fit long ruffled tiers on a fat quarter, but this pattern shows how to make it work, and using fat quarters with coordinating prints is a great way to use up smaller pieces like that. I liked my first try so well, I had to try again with all one print, and the dress looks totally different. Fit was great on my modern AG dolls, and the instructions are clearly written with accompanying photos to help you along.
