This versatile pattern for knit fabric wardrobe basics designs includes a T-shirt with choice of round or V neck and four styles of sleeve; a T-shirt dress or top with a choice of three skirt lengths and leggings with cutting lines included for adapting the leggings patterns to make Capri length leggings or cycling shorts.
There’s even a separate leggings pattern piece to make leggings out of adult knee-high socks. The dress and top are soft and comfortable to wear and look cute with or without the leggings. The skirt of the top/dress does not need to be made from knit fabric, so this gives you a lot more potential to mix and match fabrics.
When worn together the T-shirt and leggings can also be used as cozy pajamas that work for boy or girl dolls.
There’s plenty of scope for adding trims, vinyl transfers or machine embroidery to the T-shirt and T-shirt dresses and tops to add versatility to your garments. The pattern includes a bonus tutorial containing information on the different types of knit fabrics, and tips for successfully sewing knit fabrics when using a basic sewing machine, so don’t let knit fabrics hold you back if you don’t have a serger or overlock stitch on your sewing machine.

This PDF sewing pattern by Genniewren Designs is designed to fit 18 inch dolls such as American Girl®.
Recommended Fabrics: The majority of this pattern is designed for knit (jersey) fabrics with a minimum 20% stretch crosswise. Woven fabrics can *only* be used for the skirt of the dress or top.
Supplies Needed:
• The T-shirt can be cut from a piece of knit fabric approximately 20" long by 14" wide/51cm x 36cm. If you prefer to upcycle, you can cut out a few T-shirts from an old adult sized T-shirt. The fabric you use needs to have at least 20% stretch crosswise, but does not need any stretch lengthwise.
• For the dress or top you will need approximately the same amount as for the T-shirt, plus additional fabric for the skirt – the skirt pattern piece supplied measures 22”/56cm wide, but you can use additional fabric if you prefer a fuller skirt. If desired, you can use woven fabrics for the skirt piece as the skirt part does not need stretch fabric.
• For the dress/top you will also need a strip of iron on interfacing, 12" by 3/4"/30cm x 2cm to stabilize the waistline.
• For the leggings you will need a piece of knit fabric 12" long by 18" wide/30cm x 46cm, with the stretch along the longer side.
• You can also make full length leggings from a pair of adult knee socks using the alternative leggings pattern piece. Try to find socks that have a narrow elastic edge along the top of the sock rather than turn-over cuffs, as this will mean the leggings can be worn with shorter tops.
• Capri leggings can be made from calf length socks and cycle shorts can be made from adult sized ankle socks.
• Hook and loop tape for the back fastening. For the T-shirt you need 4½"/11.5cm in both hook and loop sides, and for the T-shirt dress/top you will need 3½"/8cm.
• Stretch lace, fold over elastic or contrast knit binding to finish the neck, sleeve and hem edges of the T-shirt or T-shirt dress/top, or you can cut your own binding from your fabric using the pattern piece provided. You will need approximately 9”/23cm for the neckline, and 5”/13cm for each sleeve.
• Elastic for the leggings waist: 9½”/24cm of ¼"/6mm (or 4 cord) wide flat elastic.
