Medieval Aprons 18" Doll Clothes Pattern

  |

Make a traditional Medieval Apron which was most often depicted in illuminated manuscripts being worn by midwifes and their apprentices.  The bibbed design is fully round with a loose fit and the deep sides make it easy to access ones clothing underneath while remaining fully covered. The front and back bibs can be simply gathered, but were often tightly smocked.  The small simple pattern makes it a great project to learn smocking on.  Original designs have fixed shoulder straps so the apron could be pulled on over one's head, but because of the larger head proportions of 18” dolls, the straps snap on in the back to make dressing easier.  Smocking was a fairly new sewing technique that was developed by the working class in the Medieval period to make garments more form fitting warmer.

A bonus half apron design is included with this pattern.
