This week, I show you something a little different: how to make and use bias tubes to form an unusual braid! It gets its name from the single, colored strand that runs down the middle of the braid.
GIVEAWAY UPDATE: We have a winner! It's Natalie, who said, "I don’t think I could pick a favorite spot to vacation! Anywhere with family is great(as long as it’s not camping!), but I’d love to visit Ireland." Ireland sounds amazing, Natalie....and good times are always better with loved ones :) We'll be in touch via email soon.
And, thanks to everybody who entered! Wow! :)
There are lots of places you could use this braid, but today I'm going to use it as straps for the Liberty Jane Maxi Dress.
Cut fabric strips on the bias, 1" wide by about 12" long. You'll need three from your main color, and one from an accent color.
(By the way, "bias" just means at a 45 degree angle to the straight grain of the fabric -- there are lots of videos on youtube if you're not sure about this part. Cutting on the bias makes the finished tube lay a lot more smoothly when it's braided.)
Fold a strip in half, then stitch a shy 1/4" away from the folded edge.
Trim away the extra seam allowance, close to your stitching line.
Cut a tiny slit in one end of the tube, and thread a bobby pin through this spot.
Carefully work the bobby pin through the tube, to turn it to the right side. Give your finished tube a gentle press.
Do this with all the strips, then lay them out in order: two base color, accent, then the last base color. Stitch them together at one end.
Secure the end to your worksurface with a piece of tape -- or, you can just leave them in your machine, and hold them in place with the needle, like we suggest in the Maxi Dress pattern. It's time to braid!
Take the strip on the very left. Run it OVER strip #2, then UNDER the accent strip.
Then, take the strip on the very right, and put it UNDER its neighbor, and OVER the accent strip.
Keep going! (Left side: Over, Under. Right side: Under, Over. Left side: Over, Under...)
Your braid should start to look something like this:
When you get to the end, stitch the strips together at the bottom so they don't come unravelled.
Then, measure off the length of braid you'll need for your project, and stitch on either side of your cutting line. Now you're ready to chop the braid up, and put it to good use.....
...like sewing them into a cute new summer maxi dress!
Wanna win this maxi dress? I made it just for this tutorial, and I'd love to send it to one lucky winner!

My favorite vacation spot is Northeast England, with its ancient castles, beautiful coastline, and Roman ruins. So much history has happened in this place, and your imagination can run wild!
My favorite summer vacation spot is in Santa Maria, Sonora, Mexico because my brother and his Hispanic wife and my neices live there! Three little girls and they so much fun! I love the desert too, it is lovely and the food is amazing!
My favorite summer vacation spot is perched on the side of our hill in the woods, overlooking our pond and watching the family fishing. Wildlife all around. No cars, no planes and no neighbors. Just nature, me and my family.
My favorite summer vacation spot is Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. My husband and I went there on our honeymoon and we try to go back every year in July.
I love spending time at the cottage with family and friends. It is perfect after our long winters.
My favorite summer vacation spot is anywhere with my Family!
My favorite summer vacation spot is….camping (RVing) near a lake with my husband and sewing machine. Love this because our children and grandchildren often join us and it is just so different from being together at home. We hike, we bike, we swim, we talk, we eat, we play games and we laugh. The actual spot isn’t as important as the togetherness and fun in the RV.
My favorite summer vacation is Disney world! I’m with my 2 great kids & hubby. We take our time & explore. We dine at fun places! Now my daughter is older all of us do the rides together! My kids aren’t running around doing after school activities. We get to spend time together!
I recently just got a sewing machine ! I taught my 8 yr old daughter how to do a basic hand stitch. So proud! I want to start sewing clothes for her dolls!
My favorite vacation spot is right here in my year old dream home designed by my husband and I. Edge of our small town with wooded back yard where we’ve had as many as 50 deer roaming. I can sit on the covered deck and watch the birds and enjoy the quiet – and never have to pack a bag!!!
“My favorite summer vacation spot is….”sitting on my patio and having some ‘me time’, reading a book or simply enjoying the garden flowers. Looking after my 99 year old dad means I cannot get away for a vacation. There will be time for that eventually, when he no lomger needs my help!
My favorite spot is the coast of Maine.
To be at camp sitting by the river. There’s a fire going in the fireplace and family to enjoy time with. Can’t wait for those warm summer evenings to return
My favorite place to vacation is a cozy log cabin nestled on a small pond in the highland woods of Maine. My parents built the cottage in the early 60’s and now my eldest son has ownership and has made it an even more relaxing and beautiful spot.
My favorite vacation spot is Door County WI. Lots of shopping, wine tasting, good food and hiking. Very relaxing hanging with our best friends enjoying each other’s company.
Our families favourite is a camp ground we like to go to, crystal clear water, rocks for clambering on and over and a campfire at night. :)
My favorite summer vacation spot is: right here at home!
I live on a farm at the base of a mountain about an hour outside of DC; there are so many things to do and see right here: besides the farm, there’s wildlife and wild flowers painting the countryside. And if we get tired of the country, we can check out the museums and landmarks in DC, or travel a little further to Baltimore for the aquarium.
Sometimes the best vacation spots are right there in your own backyard!
My favorite summer vacation spot is Cabo San Lucas Mexico! Went there last year and it was beautiful. If I brought my doll and I won the dress she could wear it there : )
My favorite summer vacation spot is on a beach in my new home, Puerto Rico.
Wallowa Lake during the summer is my favorite vacation spot. Really, though, it’s almost impossible to choose one place in Oregon that wouldn’t be perfect for the beauty of it all from the coast to the mountains to the high desert.
Anywhere! We have never really been able to take the kids on a vacation. Love the dress! Thanks for the chance to win!
My favorite summer vacation spot is my backyard surrounded by friends, family and my garden.
My favorite summer vacation spot is Ross Lake. It’s not to far from home and family members can often join us there.
My favorite summer vacation spot is Yosemite. We campedt there every summer when I was growing up.
I love this maxi dress! The fabric is perfect!
My favorite summer vacation spot is “up north” in Butternut, WI. A place where time moves slowly. Sunrise brings amazing sky colors that reflect in the water. The loon’s cry and the lazy waves splashing the shoreline are hypnotic. Deer wander into the yard expecting their daily breakfast of corn as the trees sway in the gentle breeze. Being one with nature. Beautiful.
Going to the beach with my granddaughters and their American dolls.
My favorite summer vacation spot is anywhere as long and my kids and grand kids are there. We all went camping this past summer for a week and had an amazing time – such sweet memories.
My favorite summer vacation spot is in Palm Bay, Florida with my two daughters. We go to the beach at least 3 times a week and Fuad will take his big boat out on the ocean on Sundays to fish. I just love it. He has a special spot for my wheelchair and its all set up to keep me in the boat if I hook a big fish which I have done once. I loved it and we had it for supper that night and fed all 7 of us. I’m embarrassed because I can’t remember what I caught I was just so excited that even though they tried I brought it in all by myself. So glad he had anchored my wheelchair or we would have been in the ocean. So much fun and the smell of the ocean laying on the beach is wonderful and the waves coming in will lull you to sleep if you relax and let it win. zzzzzzzzzz
My favorite vacation spot is tent camping by Duluth, MN. Driving up the north shore of Lake Superior was amazing!

My favorite summer vacation spot is on a raft in the middle of our swimming pool!
My favorite summer vacation spot is being with family. I love being able to slow down, be flexible, and say “yes” rather than trying to keep the tighter schedule of the school year. Can’t wait!
My favorite summer vacation spot is NYC! I love being able to walk to places.
My favorite vacation spot is any where we go with our kids and grandkids!
My favorite vacation spot is anywhere and everywhere! I am a Travel Agent and LOVE to travel. That being said, my “Go-to” place in the Summer is New York City — there is so much to see and do in NYC: American Girl Place, Fifth Avenue, Central Park, Serendipity*s, FAO Schwarz, Rockefeller Center, the Museum of Natural History, MOMA, Times Square, Broadway, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, Little Italy, 7th Avenue Fashion District — I could go on and on and on! If not New York, any European City LOL
My favorite summer vacation spot is, going to the beach with all the grandkids in tow, filling the wagon with all the beachy gear, food drinks, etc., etc., and camera,( don’t forget the beach umbrella so Nana does not turn into a lobster!) And after spending hours chasing the kiddos in the water, running on the beach, and making numerous sand castles trying to wear them out — I’ve collapsed from exhaustion and need a solo vacation of my own! lol!
My favorite summer vacation spot is Hawaii, perfect for a maxi dress. My husband and I cant wait until we get to go again 4 yrs. Beautiful, everything is green!
Right here on the farm! We just planted corn with a spot in the middle for the kids to play. Later we’ll make a giant corn maze.
